POETRY: MY PAST IN MY LIFE AHEAD

MY PAST IN MY LIFE AHEAD

In the life ahead lies the toil of my yesterday,

In the life ahead lies the heat of my today,

And in the life ahead slumbers my unruffled dreams waiting to unravel,

Is when my unknown life ahead tow-chains with my pristine past.

*

And in the cantabiles of today lies the unresting rehearse,

And all along the soft dribbles of the winding brooks,

Lies the harsh and cruel nature,

Yet life ahead only believes in its bloated ego.

*

Sanity says forget the past enjoy the present for future is unknown,

But i say unknown is unknown till it is known,

So be with your present,

And never dump your past,

For bright days ahead will only evolve out of your vibrant past.

*

And between the flashy today and the glamorous tomorrow,

Exists my mother of lifetime–my past,

That held my hand and showed me the way.

*

And when the flash dwindles and glamour recedes,

Much evaporates and little is left in the days ahead,

But a treasure to applaud,

In the realms of past and the bygone days.

*

And that is when i realised,

There is no future without a past,

But there is a past without a future.

YOU ARE AS STRONG AS YOUR GOOD TIME … Uppar wala sab dekh raha hai

roy

There was a time when Sahara Sri Subrata Roy, had become the all-time cynosure of Lucknow city. To the masses, he was no less important than the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Many VVIPs, VIPs, Politicians, Film-stars and even Sports personalities took pride on being invited by him to his ostentatious functions, where they would eagerly surround him for a photo-op.

His palatial house often staged big shows in which many film-stars flew down from Bollywood to participate. But over a period of time. He had become arrogant in his own unmindful ways. So much so that he had even started taking orders from the honourable courts, lightly. But he did not realise that his good time is running out when one day he was finally arrested more than a year back. And since then most VVIPs, VIPs film-stars, Sports-personalities and even dignitaries who flocked around his glamour vanished overnight like thin air. When, he was left alone to fend for himself. Perhaps, after having tasted the selfish world this time. As and when Subrata Roy steps out of the jail he will probably be a different person altogether.

lalit

Good times is no one’s monopoly. Lalit Modi former IPL Commissioner, President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises, Executive Director of Godrey Phiilips India and scion of renowned Modi family from Modinagar is leading a fugitive’s life abroad in spite of having a great legacy back home. Before reaching the status of a fugitive he too was a cynosure, and an awfully flamboyant personality of India. And it is interesting to see where, once people died to know him, today some people are on the verge of losing their jobs, by helping him. With all the power and pelf back home, Lalit Modi leads a life of a criminal even when he appears to brazen it out on various TV channels. But bad times are here for Lalit Modi.

In our lifetime we often assure and reassure ourselves that we are rich and powerful and nothing wrong will ever happen to us. But the fury of nature, comes as a bolt from the blue. So be careful, you could be the next … for Uppar wala sab dekh raha hai. And in bad times only your good deeds help.

SHORT STORY: THREE REFUGEES … lessons of life

Copyright@shravancharitymission

SHORT STORY: THREE REFUGEES … lessons of life

Once upon a time during the partition of India there were three refugees who landed up in Calcutta. The three had walked for many miles over the days and were tired and hungry. They were looking for alms as they had no money to buy food.

As tired souls, they looked around the streets, markets and even nearby colonies. But no one provided them with either money nor food. Tired, they filled their stomach with some tap water, after which, they walked across the road, and entered a park, to rest under a tree.

They had not, adequately, befriended themselves, even when, they were together for the last couple of days, because their focus was on, rest and food as they were tired, hungry and even sick. For them crossing the border, organizing food, water, shelter and survival was the immediate priority during the days that they had traveled together, and not so much befriending themselves.

Their hunger was now reaching a burst point. When a group of people from a charitable organisation came up to their rescue, having realized they were refugees. They gave them a dozen bananas each. Upon receiving the bananas they were thrilled, and they started jumping in joy as if they had recovered their lost fortune.

Soon, the first refugee, who appeared the most hungry had all the bananas in a go and burped loudly, and then decided to rest.

The second refugee, had six out of them, and kept the balance six bananas close to his chest and decided to take some rest.

The third refugee, after having six bananas got up with the remaining six, and told the remaining two, that he is going up to the nearby market and will return soon.

    Now see what happens:

The first refugee who had finished all the bananas was rather puzzled at the banana-behaviour of the balance two refugees. As hitherto, they were cribbing, they were extremely hungry and could eat a man, but when they got bananas to eat, they couldn’t finish it. By now about half-an-hour had passed when he saw the third refugee walking back without bananas in his hand. Upon seeing the third refugee without bananas, number one’s inquisition started tickling him. He couldn’t resist and without waiting for the third refugee, he suddenly asked the second one.

‘Arrey yaar, you were so hungry but you didn’t finish all the bananas. Why are you keeping these six bananas with you?’

The second refugee replied, ‘I have kept it for the evening. For who knows in this unknown city you might not get any charity again, so as a precaution I have kept it for my dinner.’

‘And, what about you? You had gone out with six bananas but now you have none with you.’ The first refugee asked the third refugee.

‘Well … well I ate six and sold six and now I have money for two more meals.’ Replied the third person.

The story conveys a smart worldly message. The first refugee ate all the bananas thinking some other Good Samaritan or God perhaps will not let him go hungry. The second refugee showed a streak of saving and cautiousness for the rainy day so he ate six and kept six for dinner but the third refugee had that entrepreneurial drive so he ate six and sold six.

Introspect, what would you have done under the circumstances?

POETRY: YOUR CONSCIENCE WAS MY SIGN ON

 Copyright@shravancharitymission

CONSCIENCE CONSCIENCE1

YOUR CONSCIENCE WAS MY SIGN ON

In pursuit of you I prayed and prayed,

With you behind I strayed and strayed,

Knowing well you’ll protect me from all disgrace,

As the world looks up at you when in dire straights.

*

In all my wrongs you were a party,

As I churched and templed to keep you happy,

I divorced my disobedient conscience to be with you,

And in all my endeavours I only saw you.

*

You got me name fame wealth and riches,

You made me an icon to exemplify the masses,

I was going great guns,

Until one day it all stopped happening,

And God its tiring thereon.

*

Son you got me all wrong,

I was never in for your wrongs, and I’m deaf to songs,

And no more can see my own churches and temples,

Perhaps, God has now left them and gone,

And mere makeover and materialism is on,

*

And child when you were born,

I was around,

And I come to each child that is born,

To leave my sign on.

*

But God I didn’t find you when I was born,

So I kept looking for you in the temples, churches and my bygones,

And later … I discovered you in my prosperity and my riches,

Till one day it was all gone.

*

Dear son your conscience was my sign on,

Until one day you asked my ‘sign-on’ to carry on,

And since then you were on your own,

For I was long gone.

#POEM: KEEP YOUR CALM

POEM: KEEP YOUR CALM

When things go wrong, keep your calm,

While you go to town, keep your calm,

And when you have to leave the town, still remain calm,

For the water beneath is turbulent,

But the bridge over is calm.

*

I may have cried when I was born,

But in the journey of life I remained calm,

I fought alone with the shield of calm,

And the most accurate arrow in any quiver is the arrow of calm.

*

Life is turbulent but beyond is calm,

Where turbulence is momentary, but permanence is calm,

100 metres are turbulent, but marathons are calm,

Rivers are noisy, but sea is calm.

*

Before a calamity it’s calm,

And after the calamity too, it’s calm,

And beyond the sound barrier it’s calm and calm,

For devils are loud, but God is calm,

*

I lost my pride when I was not calm,

But regained it by imbibing calm,

I saved priceless moments by remaining calm,

And I built my fortune by pursuing my calm.

*

All those who made it had a treasure of calm,

And those who didn’t had no calm,

Amitabh Bachchan is calm, Roger Federer is calm,

Sachin too was calm.

*

Volcanoes erupt, but Himalayas are calm,

T-20s are volatile, but test matches are calm,

Shallows are shifty, but depths are calm,

Hitler was nasty, but Gandhi was calm.

*

Days are frothy, but years are calm,

Short term is alarm, Long term is calm,

Health and wealth are off-springs of calm,

Lies are deadly, but truth is calm.

*

I dreaded life when I sold my calm,

I now enjoy when I have my calm,

And when I look back in life,

All I remember is my calm,

*

And if I could buy I would buy tons and tons of calm,

For happiness and greatness lies in calm,

Mother of all virtues, thy name is calm,

And so keep your calm.

SHORT STORY: THE POWER IN GOD’S NAME

Copyright@shravancharitymission

guru gurukul student

Once upon a time there happened to be a novice pupil of a learned Guru. He was a simple soul and as tutored by his Guru he always chanted the name of God as his mantra. But one day a rare question came to his mind. When he went up to him and said, ‘Gurudev, why do I need to chant the name of God every now and then? As, by doing so I am neither helping him nor myself.’

Guru smiled at his simplicity. He wanted him to learn something, out of his own experience. So he said to him. ‘If you want to feel the power in God’s name. Go close to that white bird perched on that tree near your house and ask him this question.’

The pupil, in order to comply with his Guru’s orders. Went close to the bird and asked him the question. But was shocked to see that the bird died on the spot. The moment it heard God’s name. Scared and shocked the pupil ran to his Guru and narrated the entire episode to him. Guru heard what the pupil had to say and expressed his sorrow. Uttered some soothing words and then said, ‘Don’t worry about it my son. Now you go to all those animals that stay in the stables, near your house. There you have a cow that has just given birth to a calf. You go an ask this question in the calf’s ears.’

But unlike last time. This time, the pupil was not very keen on going there, because of his previous experience. But still just to obey his Guru he reluctantly went up to the calf and asked the same question. But he was shell-shocked as the calf too, upon hearing the name of God. Died on the spot.

Devastated, the pupil ran to his Guru again, and loudly said, ‘Gurudev! Recitation of God’s name, has made me a murderer of two. What should I do now? Guru looked at him for a moment and then expressed his grief, again. He then followed it up, with some more kind words and consoled him, by saying, ‘I regret both the times you were disappointed. But I would request one last time. You, please go to the nearby kingdom, and to the King’s palace there. And ask the same question to his newly born baby Rajkumar.

Once again, the novice pupil was dejected. But just to keep up with his Guru’s orders. He reluctantly headed towards the kingdom. He was extremely scared and gingerly, he went up to the king. Where, he mentioned his Guru’s name and desired to see the new born baby Rajkumar. Since the King knew the Guru and respected him he allowed him to see the Rajkumar. The novice, without losing any time went up to the baby and asked the same question. But upon hearing God’s name a mishap occurred and the baby died. The king got extremely upset. He ordered his infantry to do away with the novice by putting him to death. Nervous, the pupil started talking to himself. ‘O my God, I didn’t know your name was so harmful for others. I was better off without it.’

But while he was murmuring all this. A piercing-celestial ray of light came out of the baby’s body and formed into a divine shape. It gestured pranam at the novice pupil and said. ‘I am grateful to you and your Guru. I was serving a curse that I will have three births on earth, and that I will suffer profusely. But your Guru to protect me sent you for my help. When I was a bird you got me mukti (salvation). When I was a calf. Then also you liberated me, and when I was born in human form then too, you got me mukti, by just uttering the name of God. There is immense power in God’s name which you can’t see. After saying all this the divine form vanished. The king released the pupil and gave him lots of presents. The pupil went running to his Guru. He was spellbound. Guru smiled and admiringly said, ‘now you know the real power in God’s name. Name of God can do such miracles that we can’t even think of. But the job is extremely precise and highly devotional.

    The story is from Upanishad.

WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FEEL LOW?

Copyright@shravancharitymission

123

‘I’m feeling low, sad or depressed’ is something we all hear almost on a daily basis from friends, colleagues, peer groups, relatives and even close family members. You may call it depression, a state of mind, a dejected syndrome, life style occurrence or all in one, as it is difficult to delineate? So, for the time being let’s call it a ‘Sad State of Mind (SSOM). The frequency in some may be high and in some low. However, it spares no one, except children up to a certain age group. Does it therefore mean, that as soon as you start facing life you encounter SSOM?

Perhaps yes, and it transcends all age groups, sex and even professions. Where, it encounters everyone in the journey of life. I too have suffered from SSOM. It comes uninvited, and at odd hours like an unwanted guest, not knowing how long it will stay. One day when I got frustrated. I decided to cross check with some of my colleagues and friends if they too were infested by SSOM and most of them said yes. I wasn’t surprised. As it leaves you hapless, makes you lethargic and impedes you from doing even your normal chores at home and routine work at office. And, in this manner it also affects India’s GDP and leads to a negative trail. So, I decided to do something about it.

First, I thought of ways and means to prevent it, if not cure it. Or, find a sound way to dispel it but failed in doing so. So, I decided to survey some men, women, students, professionals, academicians and politicians with just one startling question:

67

‘WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FEEL LOW?’

Sample size was two hundred. And to my astonishment no one sulked at the very question. In fact, everyone just promptly replied in a one-liner, which I am writing below as quote-unquote or verbatim. Results showed that every person had a way of resolving his or her own SSOM but broadly preferred to stay under the nine sub-headings mentioned below.

SURRENDER TO #ALMIGHTY … He will take care

I talk to God. I visit the temple. I chant verses from holy Ramayana. I read a few pages out of my handy Gita. I flip through my Holy Quran. I go to the Gurudwara. I pray to Goddess Durga. I read a few pages of Holy Bible. I watch a devotional channel on TV. I recite Hanuman Chalisa. I ponder over my equation with God. Mind you, I didn’t find anyone telling me that I go to a powerful person to resolve my SSOM.

INTROSPECTION & MEDITATION … helps you in rediscovering yourself.

I meditate. I introspect. I ponder over my past. I start worrying about my future. When did I help someone last? I try and remember. Why did I hurt someone? I think. Why did I make fun of someone? I regret. Perhaps it’s a reminder for some noble deed.

TO SERVE … gives a feeling of soul cleansing.

I donate. I feed my cat to some milk. I feed ants. I feed a cow. I feed a street dog. I feed my pet dog. I feed an old beggar.

PHYSICAL EXERTION … refreshes you to take on the world.

I take my dog for a walk. I go for a swim. I jog for a while. I go cycling. I go golfing. I go swimming. I go to the gym. I go to the spa. I do indoor exercises. I do deep breathing, it helps. I go fishing.

ENTERTAINMENT … rejuvenates you.

I open my bottle to have a swig. I read a novel. I switch on the TV. I go for a movie. I watch cricket. I start playing computer games. I read jokes. I play indoor games. I laugh in my toilet, as you would in the laughing club. I sing in my bathroom. I watch a cartoon channel. I Play with my Pet. I listen to music. I play my keyboard. I smoke a cigarette. I eat excessively.

MIND DIVERSION … helps you forget.

I read anything just anything lying around. I start writing. I start painting. I go and sit in the lawn amidst plants. I call up my girlfriend. I call up my boyfriend. I call up Dad. I call up Mom. I call up my daughter. I call up my son. I call up my daughter-in-law. I call up my wife. I call my up husband. I call up my best friend. I speak to my boss, he gives me some sound advice. I start thinking of pending work in office. I speak to my mentor. I flip through a magazine. I read newspaper. I go for a drive.

KILLING SSOM … with other powerful thoughts.

I think of my last holiday and the pleasant moments with my family. I build determination to confront the situation that makes me feel low. I recall, ‘No matter how bad things are they could be worse.’ ‘Nothing is permanent’ I say to myself. I think of the best surprise of my life. I think of the best episode of my life. I think of an ugly episode of my life. I still have a healthy body and soul so why worry. I have a loving family so why feel low. I have a bright career so why feel low.

DOING NOTHING … just another way of handling by not reacting.

I sulk. I just shut my mind for some time. I know something good is coming next so I don’t bother. I just doze off. I take a small break from work. I just have a cup of tea. I do nothing and wait for the mood swing to be over. I stop eating. I fiddle with my mobile. I consider it to be like common cold, so I just move on. I believe in- no matter how bad things are something is going right and no matter how good things are something is going wrong; this balances life. Even the President of the US suffers from SSOM so who am I? Feeling low is cyclic, so why worry. Once in a while we all feel low, perhaps it’s the order of the nature. Chalta hai- don’t be too serious about life, let life be serious about you.
The moral of the story is we all feel low at times, and many a times during a lifetime. Whilst, such occurrences happen, we should not feel isolated and down beaten as it happens to most human beings on the planet. Life is not a bed of roses but a constant struggle and more the struggle is shared more life becomes easy to take on and this is a small attempt towards that.
