    The word ‘boss’ is perhaps the most dreaded word in any company. We all deal with various kinds of bosses in our career. I too have dealt with many in the past. The very expression as if pyramids naturally on words like the ‘leader’ or the ‘coach’ as if it is God gifted to hierarchy. But that is certainly not the case.

    In my long career, I too worked with a variety of them where each one had his own SWOT to mull. At times I even pondered if the boss is a collective strength of his subordinates together with his qualification, skill, talent and experience. And in the same ratiocination what then is the subordinate? But answers were not quite visible.

    In the long corporate saga of every executive that keeps unfolding from time to time it will be interesting to observe the type of bosses you come across. Some bosses are oven-baked with qualities of leadership and are excellent coaches. They are not stuck-up on hierarchy; and are devoid of any hangover about their tall qualification, wide experience and seniority. But a majority of them may not be like this.

    During my long innings, I interfaced various kinds of bosses. Where, I also took adequate pains to study the bosses of my colleagues and always kept an eye on my boss’s boss and never deviated from keeping my focus on the top boss, from where, actually, the culture of the organisation flowed.

    Annually, HR defines the KRAs of each functionary in the company but the grey area remains. The delicate relationship between the boss and the subordinate as there is always something ‘intra’ about it.

    A successful boss is a person who can extract maximum out of the ambience in the given environment. But for that to happen optimum tuning is required with the team. Sadly, some bosses only keep cribbing about the capabilities of their subordinates. Conversely subordinates tend to perform better if the boss is approachable and can add value in problem solving and for sure possesses the art of debottlenecking. This requires, both soft skills and talent and bosses who don’t have this in abundance, usually confine themselves to isolation.

TYPE OF BOSSES

    While dealing with your boss try and get to know more about the behavioural side of him. For all you know he might have feudalistic tendencies in him where he might consider you more of a constituent then a co-worker. Such bosses are like tyrants and prefer sycophancy to merit. So, one can call them feudal bosses. Then there are some bosses who are soft by nature and don’t demand much out of you, nor do they reprimand you, but they never ever do anything for you considering your worthiness. One can christen them as frigid bosses.

    The third variety are the ones who give their subordinates enough space to move around and train on the job; but themselves do not extend a helping hand in training you. But overall they are concerned about you and have a magnanimous heart. They are also open to learning from you on a selective basis. You may call them friendly bosses.

    But the most spectacular variety, are the ones who not only demand work out of their subordinates, but also keep coaching them to perform better. They also have the talent to train you on the job in case you are not skilled to perform the task. This is the prized catch: Boss+talent+coach.

    In this digital and high-tech world where talent is replacing experience every moment. The line between the boss and the subordinate is only getting hazier. So, there is need for bosses to move from ‘Bossgiri’ to a talent retentive boss.

QUALITY AND CONSISTENCY-HALLMARK OF ANY BUSINESS

    By quality we generally mean. Standard of a product, when compared with other brands of the same product; and how good or bad something is. And, when we want to classify it, we call it poor, good or even excellent.

    Quality, to my mind is also deliverance of what you promise. For, quality is something that keeps evolving, and anything that evolves cannot become an ‘excellence’ overnight. So quality varies along the process of evolution of a product or service.

    Sporadic quality here and there has little meaning, unless it comes along with consistency. As that once-in-a-while approach to quality, appears as an insouciance dabble by any producer or marketer.

    Recently, when I was in my hometown. I visited ‘King of chaat’ (a street food joint) a couple of times in Hazratganj—an up market of Lucknow, that I used to visit some thirty years back. Since, then, this food joint has gone through a generation and has even grown exponentially.

    But that apart. I was more astonished at the very fact, that each dish tasted just the same as it used to taste some thirty years back. And, in all probabilities many of their employees also by now, must have changed hands. But the food joint has been able to maintain its foot fall only through its dictum of quality with consistency, I’m sure.

    And this is not an example in isolation. As in every city you will find similar street food joints that must have commenced with tasty quality. But those that have survived, and saw growth had the element of consistency in them and the rest packed off.

    That brings me to the moot point. That each business professional should also be like a street food joint that needs to consistently give quality output to grow in life. I am particularly comparing such professionals with street food joints, because they operate under the most difficult circumstances and are not as resourceful as big enterprises. And, apart from internal pressures they also take on fierce extraneous pressures to which they are often vulnerable.

    So, after having a good fill in ‘King of Chaat’ that day. Before leaving the place, I asked the current owner who happened to be the son of the founder. His key to success and this is what he had to say,

    ‘My father gave me three important business tips. One, never be in a hurry when you get a chance to understand your customers taste. Two, quality without consistency is flippancy. Three, consistency without quality is stagnancy.’

    There was a time when Sahara Sri Subrata Roy, had become the all-time cynosure of Lucknow city. To the masses, he was no less important than the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Many VVIPs, VIPs, Politicians, Film-stars and even Sports personalities took pride on being invited by him to his ostentatious functions, where they would eagerly surround him for a photo-op.

    His palatial house often staged big shows in which many film-stars flew down from Bollywood to participate. But over a period of time. He had become arrogant in his own unmindful ways. So much so that he had even started taking orders from the honourable courts, lightly. But he did not realise that his good time is running out when one day he was finally arrested more than a year back. And since then most VVIPs, VIPs film-stars, Sports-personalities and even dignitaries who flocked around his glamour vanished overnight like thin air. When, he was left alone to fend for himself. Perhaps, after having tasted the selfish world this time. As and when Subrata Roy steps out of the jail he will probably be a different person altogether.

    Good times is no one’s monopoly. Lalit Modi former IPL Commissioner, President and Managing Director of Modi Enterprises, Executive Director of Godrey Phiilips India and scion of renowned Modi family from Modinagar is leading a fugitive’s life abroad in spite of having a great legacy back home. Before reaching the status of a fugitive he too was a cynosure, and an awfully flamboyant personality of India. And it is interesting to see where, once people died to know him, today some people are on the verge of losing their jobs, by helping him. With all the power and pelf back home, Lalit Modi leads a life of a criminal even when he appears to brazen it out on various TV channels. But bad times are here for Lalit Modi.

    In our lifetime we often assure and reassure ourselves that we are rich and powerful and nothing wrong will ever happen to us. But the fury of nature, comes as a bolt from the blue. So be careful, you could be the next … for Uppar wala sab dekh raha hai. And in bad times only your good deeds help.

Recently, I visited an old friend-cum-colleague of mine, whom I knew quite well. An innate live-wire, I should say. Whom, I had known for the last thirty years but was meeting him after three years. With the idea of reminiscing those good old days. I was now plonked in his drawing room holding a fancy glass and some mouthwatering snacks.

In the initial moments of warm-up I felt as usual; and as usual as I used to feel in his company earlier. But then a little beyond that. I felt as if the winds had changed. For he was not the same, and had become sober, quiet and somewhat unresponsive. Anyhow, I went past those unwieldy moments and left with an overbearing him.

Later on. I pondered and pondered, about what I thought. The diffident behaviour of my friend. And, each time I only came across emotions and insinuations that had no logic. Next day, as usual, I was back, dabbling my laptop. When, I decided to surf around certain industries, where I found some logical co-relation with my friend’s behaviour.

The industry in which my friend was working was undergoing torturous times. When, I decided to peep into his company figures, which I found were even more pathetic. As for the past two years it was in deep red. I then decided to drop the disturbing thoughts and leave the whole thing to unknown destiny.

Time trickled by. It was three months since I had met him. When, one day. I got a call from him again. And, his very first sentence took me back to times immemorial. Thirty years, to be precise. He had found a new job. I found in him the same chirpy soul talking to me, and once again he invited me home. In the manner, he usually invited me. Which, I couldn’t refuse. Sure enough, he had regained himself, and it was heartening to visualize that. So, I drew a moral out of his story.

In life don’t ever misunderstand any such friend and don’t write him off. For you really don’t know, who might be standing next to you when you are close to crossing the broken bridge. They may look and behave in a manner that may make you feel, they are annoyed with you. But they could be annoyed with themselves. Yielding and bleeding to their own circumstances in this unnecessary tough world.
