The Invisible Arm of ‘Namaste’

    If you do not know how to greet, offer a namaste. If words fail you in the introduction, offer a namaste. A wise man once said, for a learned man, no land is alien. Just as with folded hands in a namaste, no person remains a stranger. Namaste softens the rigid edges of ego. It is an invisible arm, gently soothing the pride of another, opening doors to harmony, setting the tone for an amicable meeting. Namaste is usually spoken with a slight bow with hands pressed together, palms touching each other, and fingers pointing upwards, and thumbs close to the chest.  

    More than a greeting, it is a gesture of reverence. A silent acknowledgement of dignity, a language beyond speech. It carries a spiritual whisper: “I bow to the divine in you.” Echoing the timeless wisdom of the Rigveda and resonating through the verses of the Mahabharata.

     The gesture of folding hands during a namaste is called the Anjali Mudra. In addition to namaste, this mudra is one of the postures found in Indian classical dance, such as Bharatanatyam. It is also found in Hindu temples, mandapams and in yoga practice. In moments of tension, on a crowded street, and in rising anger, a simple namaste can dissolve conflicts, turning discord into friendship. With a gentle bow and folded hands, known as the sacred Anjali Mudra, palms unite, fingers rise, and the heart speaks through silence. Namaste is derived from Sanskrit, namas (bow) and te (to you). It means, simply and profoundly, “I bow to you.” And within that simplicity lies a universe of respect, humility, connection, and peace. In a world searching for understanding, perhaps the answer lies not in words, but in a quiet, graceful namaste. Excavations in the Indus Valley Civilisation sites have found male and female terracotta figures in Anjali Mudra-like postures, doing a namaste. 

    “The light in me honours the light in you,” says Deepak Chopra, the new age guru. One of the most insightful interpretations of namaste comes from renowned English author Aldous Huxley, who explored Indian spirituality deeply. In works like The Perennial Philosophy, he reflects on the idea that the divine resides within every individual, an idea closely aligned with the spirit of namaste.

    According to professor and sociologist Holly Oxhandler, namaste is a Hindu term which means “the sacred in me recognises the sacred in you”. E. M. Forster, in his novel ‘A Passage to India’, captures the subtleties of Indian manners and gestures. While he doesn’t formally analyse namaste, his portrayal of respectful distance, non-contact greetings, and cultural sensitivity reflects the ethos underlying it. Likewise, German Spiritual teacher Eckhart Tolle speaks of recognising the “presence” or consciousness in others, again, philosophically mirroring the meaning of namaste.

    Even historians and Indologists writing in English, such as Stephen H. Phillips, have analysed the word namaste, linguistically and culturally, explaining how it conveys reverence, humility, and a subtle acknowledgement of the divine. So while namaste is rooted in Sanskrit and Indian tradition, its essence has been widely described in English, not always by name, but through ideas of inner divinity, humility, and universal respect.

        I bow not to form, nor name, nor face, but to the silent light in your inner space. Thus, namaste speaks what words cannot declare. It is a gratitude to each soul, irrespective of its flair. Namaste is a respectful form of greeting, acknowledging and welcoming a relative, guest or stranger. In some contexts, namaste is used by one person to express gratitude for assistance offered or given, and to thank the other person for their generous kindness.

    Since namaste is a non-contact form of greeting, some world leaders adopted the gesture as an alternative to handshaking during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic as a means to prevent the spread of the virus.

The All-Round Beauty of “Namaste”

WHAT IS LIFE WITHOUT MIRTH AND LAUGHTER?

    In Shakespeare’s play, ‘The Merchant of Venice’, Gratiano, a close friend of Antonio, while addressing him, says,

    Let me play the fool; /With mirth and laughter let old wrinkles come;/    And let my liver rather heat with wine/Than my heart cool with mortifying groans./Why should a man whose blood is warm within/Sit like his grandsire cut in alabaster,/Sleep when he wakes, and creep into the jaundice/By being peevish? I tell thee what, Antonio — I love thee, and ’tis my love that speaks — There are a sort of men whose visages/    Do cream and mantle like the standing pond.

    In this address, Gratiano argues that a life without mirth is like living death. He prefers to “play the fool” and age naturally through laughter rather than grow emotionally cold through constant seriousness. Using the bodily imagery of liver, heart, and blood, Shakespeare contrasts warmth, passion, and circulation with ‘mortification,’ which literally means killing the spirit. Gratiano mocks men who, despite having ‘warm blood,’ sit rigid and joyless like alabaster tomb statues, alive in body but dead in feeling. Such people ‘sleep when they wake’ and even make themselves ill through peevishness, as suggested by the image of jaundice. Spoken out of affection for Antonio, the speech criticises cultivated melancholy and false gravity, asserting that true wisdom lies in emotional vitality, openness, and engagement with life rather than in frozen solemnity.

    Although he speaks generally about a “sort of men” who cultivate solemnity. He directly names Antonio in the middle of the passage—“I tell you what, Antonio — I love thee, and ’tis my love that speaks”. This makes it clear that the speech is an affectionate rebuke of Antonio’s habitual melancholy at the beginning of The Merchant of Venice (Act I, Scene i). Gratiano urges Antonio to abandon his excessive seriousness and embrace warmth, mirth, and emotional vitality.

    Excessive gravity dries up life, while laughter, warmth, and engagement are signs of true wisdom. Gratiano’s defence of mirth belongs to a long humanistic tradition. Numerous authors and texts have conveyed the concept of a fulfilling life. “Life is too important to be taken seriously”, says Oscar Wilde. L’Allegro (“The Cheerful Man”) and Il Penseroso (“The Pensive/Melancholy Man”) are companion poems by John Milton that explore two contrasting, yet complementary, ways of life: one embracing mirth, nature, and social joy, and the other favouring solitary contemplation, deep study, and serious thought, with both leading to profound insights and true happiness. They present a balanced view of a perfect life, showing the value in both active pleasure and deep reflection, often described as ‘twin poems.’

    Gratiano’s defence of mirth and emotional warmth reflects a worldview strikingly close to that found in Hindu mythology, where life is understood not as grim endurance but as lila, the cosmic-divine play. Figures like Lord Krishna, who laughs, dances, and plays the flute even while guiding the world’s moral order, embody the belief that wisdom need not wear a solemn face. Similarly, Nataraja, the cosmic dancer, is a depiction of God Shiva, the great ascetic, suggesting that restraint and ecstasy must coexist. Both Shakespeare and Hindu mythology thus challenge the notion that gravity alone equals depth. They affirm that true understanding flows from warmth, movement, andengagement with life, where joy becomes not frivolity but a profound expression of spiritual and human vitality.

     The Bhagavad Gita celebrates the Inner Cheerfulness, ‘Natushyati, na kanksati’ which means – The sthitaprajna (One with steady wisdom) neither grieves nor desires. He remains cheerful in himself. It rejects anxiety and gloom, valuing inner brightness and balance, much like Gratiano’s refusal to sit in sorrow. “Life itself is the greatest of gifts says Mahabharata – The epic repeatedly says that life, with all its struggles, is worth cherishing, and one should engage in it energetically.

THE BOON AND BANE OF ASHWATTHAMA

    Maharathi Ashwatthama was cursed by Lord Krishna during the holy war of Mahabharat for the horrendous infanticide that he had already committed and intended to commit and also for all the other crimes committed by him during the course of the war in the Dvapar-Yug. It was unbecoming for a Maharathi in any yug to have behaved like Ashwatthama.

    Ashwatthama was the son of Dronacharya, the royal preceptor of the Kauravas and the Pandavas. His mother was Kripi. As per the scripts of Mahabharat, Ashwatthama means “the sacred voice which relates to that of a horse”. It is believed that he was named so because when he was born he cried like a horse. He was trained in warfare along with the Kauravas and the Pandavas by his father, Dronacharya. Ashwatthama had acquired knowledge of various divine weapons, namely Narayanastra, Brahmastra, Brahmashirastra, and many others.

    He was born in a cave amid a forest in present-day Uttarakhand. Dronacharya performed rigorous tapasya for many years to please Lord Shiva in order to obtain a son who after birth possessed the same valiance as Shiva.

    He was born with a divine gem on his forehead which gave him power over, all living beings, lower than human beings. It also protected him from hunger, thirst, fatigue, old age, disease, weapons, and deities. The gem made him almost invincible and immortal.

    He was a friend of evil Duryodhan and fought the devastating War of Mahabharat from his side. He fought against the upstanding Pandavas, who with the blessings of Lord Krishna, won the battle of Mahabharat, fought in Kurukshetra. While Arjun killed several warriors, Bhima killed the ninety-nine brothers of Duryodhan and also defeated him in a mace (gada) fight in which he was mortally wounded by Bhima on the thigh on account of which he too died.

    Ashwatthama, in order to avenge his father’s death caused by mendacious means, as well as the deceitful killing of other Kuru (Kaurav) warriors by the Pandavas, attacked their camp at night along with Kripacharya and Kritavarma. Ashwatthama killed Dhrishtadyumma (the twin brother of Draupadi), Shikhandi, Upapandavas (the five sons of Draupadi), the remaining Pandavas and the remaining members of the Panchal army. Even though many warriors tried to fight back, but Ashwatthama remained unharmed due to his body being possessed by Lord Shiva. Those who tried to flee from Ashwatthama’s wrath were hacked by Kripacharya and Kritavarma at the camp’s entrance.

    After the carnage, Ashwatthama, Kripacharya and Kritavarma went to Duryodhan. They told him about the killing of all the Panchalas and the Upapandavas. Duryodhana congratulated Ashwatthama for achieving what Bhishma, Dronacharya, and Karna could not before breathing his last breath.

    The Pandavas and Krishna, were away that night. When they returned to the camp they got the gory news. Upon hearing the news, Yudhishthir fainted, and the Pandavas turned inconsolable. Bhima angrily rushed to kill Ashwatthama and others followed. They found him in Sage Vyasa’s ashram near the bank of the Ganges.

            Ashwatthama, believing that his time had come, invoked the Brahmastra to attack Pandavas from a tiny blade of grass to fulfil the oath of killing them. Krishna advised Arjun to fire his Brahmastra as an anti-weapon against Ashwatthama to defend themselves. Sage Vyasa intervened and prevented the destructive weapons from clashing against each other. He asked both Arjun and Ashwatthama to take their weapons back. Arjun, knowing how to do so, took it back.

    But Ashwatthama, not knowing how to retract it, despite his early education on Brahmastra, redirected the Brahmastra toward the womb of the pregnant Uttara in an attempt to end the lineage of the Pandavas. But Krishna shielded the Pandavas’ only heir with his Sudarshana Chakra. Krishna also saved Uttara’s unborn child from the ill effects of the Brahmastra. Ashwatthama was then made to surrender the gem on his forehead that carved a permanent wound there and was cursed by Lord Krishna, for his immortality, and that he would roam in the forests till the end of Kali-Yug with blood and pus oozing out of his wound, and with no one to talk to him. Thereafter Ashwatthama went to the forest never to be seen again. Though Ashwatthama was a Maharathi of Dwapar-Yug his act of infanticide turned him into a demon not fit even for Kali-Yug. The search for Ashwatthama is still on in Kali-Yug but he is nowhere to be seen because of the curse.

SHORT STORY: THE STORY OF BERBREEK … KHATU SHAM (Mahabharata)

    The story is out of Mahabharata. Once upon a time there was a young warrior who wanted to participate in the battle of Kurushetra between the Pandavas and the Kauravas. He came to the battle field, armed with, only three arrows. On the way the youth met Krishna. Krishna asked him why he was carrying only three arrows.

    He replied, ‘with one I can destroy the Pandavas, with another the Kauravas, and with the third I can kill Krishna.’ Krishna asked the youth to prove it.

    The youth pointed towards a tree and said, ‘with one arrow I can pierce each and every leaf of the tree.’ Krishna asked the youth to demonstrate his skill, while he secretly plucked five leaves from the tree and placed it under his foot. The warrior shot an arrow, and such was his skill that the arrow pierced each and every leaf of that tree and then pierced Krishna’s foot five times, once for each leaf. Krishna realised this warrior was indeed a great one as he could do what he claimed he could.

    Krishna asked the youth, ‘from whose side do you wish to fight.’ The youth replied, ‘I always fight from the side of the loser.’

    The reply bothered Krishna. He thought. If the youth fought from the side of the loser and turned them into a winner then he would immediately change sides and participate from the losing side, and help them become the winning side. Thus he would move from side to side and keep turning the losing side to wining and winning side to losing, creating a vicious closed loop, and a never ending, meaningless, and direction less battle.

    Krishna could not allow this to happen. He therefore decided to destroy the warrior before he could participate in the battle.

    He asked the warrior, ‘will you save me from a man who plans to destroy the dharma, I hope to establish on earth?’ ‘Sure,’ said the youth, ‘show me that man and I’ll cut his head off.’ Krishna then showed him the mirror. ‘This is him.’ said Krishna. Looking at his own reflection, the youth realised that Krishna wanted him dead because he felt he threatened the outcome of the battle at Kurukshetra.

    ‘Here, take my head,’ said the youth, severing his neck. Pleased with the offering, Krishna gave the youth a boon. Youth said. ‘Allow me to witness the battle of Kurukshetra even though I’m dead.’ So Krishna placed the head of the youth on a tree atop a hill and blessed the head with life so that the youth could see all the events that take place on the battlefield of Kurushetra. This brave hero was is Berbreek, who is also known by the name of Baba Khatu.

    But that apart. The story draws our attention to the idea of taking a stand in life. Krishna destroyed the warrior because he did not take a stand. It is very important to take a stand and not just hang like a pendulum.

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

    Hello and welcome friends. The book for today is ‘LEADER—50 insights from mythology’ by none other than Devdutt Pattanaik. This manuscript has seen the light of the day through renowned publishers HarperCollins. The price of this book is rupees 499. It was published in the year 2017 under management classification.

    Devdutt Pattanaik as we all know since 1996 has written over thirty books and 700 columns, on how stories, symbols, and rituals that construct the subjective truth of myths, of ancient, and modern cultures around the world.

    The book is indeed unique in many senses where, the author has tried to link the happenings and beliefs of mythology with our day-to-day life, especially, management of business enterprises. To write such a book, the author, obviously needed to have, vast cross section insights, into mythology, and its perfect syncretism for the safeguard of mankind. And the author has done exactly that.

    The book totals up to 235 pages. It has 50 chapters, and each chapter has a management lesson that emanates out of, either, a mythological tenet, or a mythological happening. Each chapter is some four to five pages long, written in plain English. Sentences are, quite well structured, with no wastage of words. And it touches everyone’s life, for most of us are actually struggling, in some form or the other, in this formidable orbit of life.

    I may not be in a position to narrate each and every episode or chapter of the book to you. But I would certainly like to take you through certain mythological names, events, episodes and tenets in the book that construct each chapter and then connects it with the relevant modern day episodes of business and the corporate world. The book encircles Mahabharata, Krishna, Arjuna, Vishwaroopa, Panadvas, Krishna, Draupadi, Kauravas, Duryodhana, Yudhistira, Dronacharya, Drupada, Kurukshetra, Bhagvata, Karna, Bhisma-Pitahmah, Bheem, Shikhandi, Elephant, Ashwatthama, Shalya, Bhagavata Purana, Khandavaprastha, Mathura, Kansa, Narada, Dwarka, Sudama, Uttanka, Gandhari, Sukant, Sharda, Kaliya the serpent, Hastinapur and Vyasa. These names itself will give you a flavour of the book.

    The author also connects Mahadeva, Shiva, Parvati, Rama, Ramayana, Rishi Vishwamitra, King Dasharatha, Bharata, Hanuman, Kumbhakarna, Vibhisana, Ayodhya, Ravana, Lanka, Garuda, Kartikeya, Ganesh, Shiv-puran, Daksha Prajapati, Varuna, Vishnu, Deva, Asuras, Lakshmi, Vishnu-Purana, Manu, Upanishads, nymph-Tilottama, Kama and Menka. These names only tell you in which circuit the book is indeed moving.

    The very name Devdutt Pattanaik might instil, in some prospective readers that the book has a Hindu flare. Where, I would like to clarify the book only has a Corporate and business flare backed up by episodic mythology, that is relevant to prove the point. No wonder it has episodes from Bible and Quran and talks of Prophet, Nathan, David, Muhammad, Ramzan, Archangel Gabriel, Mecca, Arabs, Europe, Persia, Christianity and Islam.

    It is refreshing to read about Greek Gods, Olympic Motto —Citius, Altius, Fortius—that translates into faster, higher, stronger. Then you have Ulysses, Hercules, Achilles, Odysseus, Apollo, Sea-God Poseidon, Greek God Hermes, Greek—Sisyphus, Greek heaven of the Elysian Fields, and how the author connects it to modern times.

    The book draws lessons from Brahma, Durga, Kamakhya, Shruti, Rishis, Yagnas, Raja-suya Yagna, Ashrama-dharma, Ashwamedha yagya, Mount Meru and Vishwakarma. It gives due importance to animals such as Boar, Eagle, Lion and horse. It spins a situational, positional and devotional story out of Chandra Gupta Maurya, Chanakya, Vikramaditya & Vetal, Chatrapati Shivaji, Shaunaka—the sage, Vaishampayana and Maa Santoshi Vrat.

    Both mythology and life is incomplete without stars and planets. The author brings around an episode with Brihaspati—Jupiter and Shukra—Venus.

    The author reminds of the greatness of Gautama, Buddha, Agastaya Muni, Nahusha, Indradyuma, Rishi Markandeya, Savitri, Satyavan, Shaktimuni and Harishchandra.

    Indian mythology has always had a lineage of folk tales where the author has included episodes of Akbar-Birbal, Shekchilli, Ganguteli, Raja Bhoj, Gobar ka Ganesh to convey lessons for modern day.

    And last but not the least the author even takes tips from Vivah-marriage, masculine, feminine, Americano—Pavlonian, Alpha-Male, Mughals, Jahapanah, Palki & Palanquin.

    We all think we know a lot about our own religion. But the reality is quite different. You will find it out when you read the book. For example we all think Duryodhana broke a lot of rules in Mahabharat. But did he actually do so? Find out. Read the book. I would give it eight of ten. A must read.

SHORT STORY: LESSON FROM LORD SHIVA

    In Mahabharata, before the great battle, Arjuna went to the mountains for secret weapons that would help him win the battle. On the way he saw a deer and shot it dead for food. Simultaneously, a stranger also shot it and came to claim the deer. Arrogant Arjuna became arrogant and did not allow the stranger to touch it without a fight. But very soon, to his surprise, the unknown person set aside his quiver and all his arrows. Disarmed and ashamed, the greatest archer started praying to God with all humility for help. Suddenly he found that his adversary was no one else but Lord Shiva himself in disguise who came to advise him not to take the great venture without divine intervention. The power of the creator must be sought for winning the unknown.

    In the spiritual field, we generally behave like Arjuna and want to win all our battles all by ourselves with our limited intellect and big ego. Remember, the rich storehouse of hidden potential within us is only opened unto us when we are humble, devoid of ego and possessed by a total sense of surrender to God.
