SHORT STORY: RETURN OF SANGEETA

    The final thumak of Sangeeta’s thumri faded into silence. The auditorium erupted in applause. The audience rose from their seats in a standing ovation as the curtains descended. It was Sangeeta’s maiden performance in Lucknow after a decade. The next day, she was flying back to Mumbai. As she stood backstage, she drifted into a reverie.

    Lucknow was her hometown. It was here that she had received her classical training in the Lucknow Gharana and later graduated from the Bhatkhande Sangeet Vidyapeeth. Some of her fondest childhood memories were woven around the serene banks of the River Gomti. Her father was a modest trader, and among her many school friends, three shared her passion for classical music—Amrit, Shalini, and Firdaus.

    Of the four, Sangeeta was the most gifted, with Shalini closely behind. Her ghazals and thumris won admiration wherever she performed. After graduating, life took the friends in different directions. Amrit and Firdaus married and settled into family life. Shalini married into an influential family in Lucknow but continued to pursue music.

    Sangeeta, too, flourished. As her popularity grew, she gradually emerged as a rival to Shalini. Soon, both singers were receiving invitations to perform at classical concerts. Since Lucknow was still a relatively small city, news of their achievements spread rapidly through its cultural circles.

    Shalini was unhappy with this development. She didn’t want Sangeeta to rise alongside her. Jealousy had taken root in her heart.

    One day, Sangeeta received invitations to perform for All India Radio and later for Doordarshan. She was thrilled, and her parents were immensely proud. But her success did not sit well with Shalini. Using her influence, she managed to have Sangeeta removed from both opportunities and secured her own place instead.

    The incident tarnished Sangeeta’s reputation in Lucknow. She felt humiliated and isolated. Though Shalini denied any involvement, rumours spread through the city, and the two singers stopped speaking to each other. The melody queens of Lucknow had drifted apart.

    Over time, Shalini’s influence in the city’s music circles grew stronger. Organisers hesitated to invite Sangeeta to their programmes. With only limited opportunities available, Shalini received most of the invitations while Sangeeta was ignored.

    Desperate to restore peace, Sangeeta tried to meet Shalini. She was even willing to apologise for any unintended offence and play second fiddle if necessary. But Shalini refused to even meet her.

    The doors of the music world had effectively closed on Sangeeta in Lucknow. People whispered that her only fault was being more talented than Shalini. Gradually, friends advised her to seek opportunities elsewhere. Finally, she made the difficult decision to leave Lucknow and boarded a train to Mumbai.

    The sprawling metropolis was an ocean of talent where she would encounter many Shalinis. Yet there was one crucial difference: nobody there bore personal ill will toward her. She was an unknown face, judged not by local politics but by her ability. Mumbai offered a more professional environment where talent mattered more than personal influence.

    Through perseverance, hard work, and talent, Sangeeta eventually received her first break. After years of struggle, she finally found her place.

    Today, she had returned to Lucknow as a celebrated singing sensation.

    As she emerged from the theatre after her performance, she was greeted by a sea of admirers. Amid the crowd stood Shalini, withdrawn and remorseful.

    Though the crowd pulled her in another direction, Sangeeta gently broke away and walked towards her former friend. Without hesitation, she embraced Shalini.

    Overcome with emotion, Shalini apologised for her past actions. As an act of repentance, she confessed that she had stopped performing altogether.

    Soon, Amrit and Firdaus also appeared. For Sangeeta, it was a moment of profound joy. She was witnessing the kinder and more compassionate face of her hometown. The next day, she returned to Mumbai.

    About a week later, there was a knock on Shalini’s door. An elderly gentleman stood outside.

    “My name is Raunaq,” he said politely. “May I speak with you for a while?”

    “Certainly,” replied Shalini. “What is it about?”

    “We are organising a musical concert, Sangeet Sandhya, next month in Lucknow. Madam Sangeeta has agreed to grace the occasion, but only on one condition, that you sing a duet with her. The concert is being held for the welfare of underprivileged children.”

    “Me?” Shalini exclaimed. “But I no longer perform on stage.”  Raunaq handed her a sealed note. It read:

    “Dear Shalini,

    By the time you receive this note, I shall be touring Europe for performances. I will return a week before the programme. I would be delighted if you could sing a duet with me. That is my only condition for participating in Sangeet Sandhya.

Please do not refuse. As a true friend, I feel it is my responsibility to bring you back to the stage. Let us leave the past behind. I am aware of your financial difficulties, and returning to music will help you regain both confidence and stability. Raunaq will explain the rest.

With affection,

Sangeeta.”

       In the weeks that followed, banners announcing Sangeet Sandhya appeared across the city, carrying photographs of both Sangeeta and Shalini.  The concert was a grand success.

    For the audience, it was a memorable musical evening. For Sangeeta and Shalini, it was the beginning of a renewed friendship.

    After Sangeeta returned to Mumbai, Shalini slowly found her way back to music. It was Sangeeta who had rekindled her lost passion. Two months later, while watching the evening news, Shalini froze at the headline: “Celebrated singer Sangeeta passed away in Mumbai after battling a terminal illness.” The dinner plate slipped from her hands.

    In an instant, everything made sense. Sangeeta’s insistence on the duet, her warmth, her forgiveness, and her silence after returning to Mumbai. With tears in her eyes, Shalini realised that even while facing death, Sangeeta had chosen to heal a broken friendship and restore another singer’s life.

    Six months later, Lucknow organised “Sangeet Bhari Shaam” to honour its beloved daughter. As the driving force behind the event, Shalini stood before Sangeeta’s garlanded portrait and whispered,

“You never really left us, Sangeeta. You returned through your music, your kindness, and your forgiveness.”

And as the hall echoed with her melodies, it seemed that Sangeeta had come home once again.

    The Urdu oral storytelling art form, which flourished in Awadh during the 1800s, is seeing a revival, again mostly from Lucknow, says Neha Lalchandani

    The shifting of Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula’s court from Faizabad to Awadh in 1775 marked the birth of Lucknow as a cultural and administrative hub. Already an important centre of Urdu learning, the city soon emerged as an attractive destination for artists, musicians, and storytellers who once thrived in Mughal courts in Delhi. What started as a steady movement of art connoisseurs to Awadh in the early 1800s intensified around the time of the Uprising of 1857.
    It was during this phase that Lucknow was introduced to the art of Dastangoi or storytelling, which came to the Mughal courts enveloped in Persian and gradually shifted to the use of Urdu.
    Mughal emperor Akbar, a known Dastangoi lover, is credited for pushing the evolution of one of the most popular stories, that of Amir Hamza, now etched as Hamzanama. Mehmood Farooqi, who is credited for with reviving the art of Dastangoi in 2005, writes that Hamza was supposedly an uncle of Prophet Mohammed, and the stories about him abound with tales of fairies and djinns, and adventures that took him on long travels. Around the 16th century, stories of Hamza started to be narrated by specialised storytellers, called Dastangos.
    Valentina Trivedi, a Dastango, says Akbar had the story of Hamza illustrated in large panels, which came to be known as Hamzanama.
    “It is said that a Dastango would stand behind different panels to relate specific stories to highlight the shift in the scene,” she said.
    Himanshu Bajpai, whose pride in the city reflects in his name ‘Lakhnauaa’, relates that Dastan-e-Hamza created quite a flutter in Delhi before moving to Lucknow in the second phase of Dastangoi’s development. Abdul Halim Sharar, in his seminal book on Lucknow called Guzashta Lucknow, talks about how Dastangoi suddenly burst out into Lucknow’s cultural scene once the dust from the Uprising of 1857 settled. Dastangoi performances could be witnessed in markets and chowks, and Lucknow’s “shaukeen” noblemen ensured that they had their favoured Dastango as part of their retinue.
    Lucknow also played a crucial role in ensuring that Hamzanama, which for years was passed on through oral traditions, was finally etched in print.
    Trivedi, explaining how the revival of the art took place almost a century later, when there are barely any recordings of the original art form, said that it was to the credit of Munshi Nawal Kishore, the founder of the Nawal Kishore Press in Lucknow, that Hamzanama was finally printed, “Munshi Nawal Kishore played a key role in the preservation of Hamzanama. Around the 1890s, Kishore must have realised the importance of having the story written down. Under him, 46 volumes, each with 1,000 pages, were finally compiled. Sadly, most of those are also now lost,” she says.
    Some of the volumes were with late Shamsur Rehman Faruqi, a well-known Urdu poet and writer. At one point, Faruqi, apparently impressed with his nephew Mehmood, asked him to take up the recital of the volumes of Hamzanama, which he preserved.
Askari Naqvi, Dastango, actor, and founder of Naimat Khana in Lucknow, remembers an interview of Mehmood’s where he talks about his ‘chacha’ encouraging him to take up Dastangoi.
“If I remember correctly, his ‘chacha’ told him, ‘maare maare phir rahe ho. Yeh (Hamzanama) padho, tumhara bhi bhala hoga aur inka (books) bhi,” Naqvi says. In 2005, Farooqi, who took his uncle’s advice seriously, brought back the art of Dastangoi to life. Mir Baqar Ali from Delhi, the last known Dastango of that era, passed away in 1928, and with him, the art of Urdu Dastangoi also died. “Ali’s art was such that when he related a story, you could see it unfold in front of you,” says Bajpai. “His projection, modulation, and expression were so perfect that he could persuade you to believe that you were hearing a woman, and in the next second someone declaring a war,” he says.
Now, 7-8 decades later, the art of Urdu storytelling has returned to the stage. In its current form, the setting of the state, the white angrakha and do palli topi can also be traced to Farooqi, who has since groomed several Dastangos like Trivedi and Bajpai. “Even this costume is inspired by Lucknow from a time when the libaas (attire) was not restricted to any religion but instead defined the cultural identity of those residing in Lucknow,” Bajpai says.
Where storytellers were once dependent on literature like Alif Laila, Bagh-o-Bahar, Qissa-e-Meherafroz-o-Dilbar, etc., now, Dastangoi is an evolving art form which has had to adapt and adopt. Even though Urdu remains the primary language, Dastangos are delving into Hindustani as well. Stories have changed and, as Naqvi explains, moved from classical to modern. “Of course, the classical version still thrives, but to reach out to a wider audience who may not be very familiar with theth Urdu, it was important to simplify the language. People are writing their own stories now. Very often works are commissioned to commemorate some recent event, etc,” he says.

    Be it the sweet and succulent Dussehri of Maal-Malihabad, Langda of Varanasi, Saharanpur’s  Chausa, or Rataul variety of Baghpat – mango, the king of fruits, continues to reign supreme.
    Another significant constituent of UP’s diverse mango wealth is Gaurjeet of Gorakhpur, for which the UP government is trying to get a GI tag. If this happens, UP will become the state with the maximum GI-tagged mango varieties.
    What, however, has emerged as a challenge for mangoes in UP in the last few years is the unpredictable weather. Lucknow-based ICAR lab, Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture (CISH), is working to make mangoes climate-resilient by introducing new technologies and, also, new varieties.
    “Last year, it was the untimely rain, and this time, it was the extreme temperature and heat which affected the crops.” Said director, CISH, T Damodaran.
    CISH Lab conducts research on mandated subtropical fruits, mangoes being the one, to come with improved varieties.
    In the case of mangoes, Dussehri, being an early ripening variety, is 80% more susceptible to heat and high temperatures. “In many fruits, we saw premature ripening this time, ” the director said.
    To deal with the impact of weather on mangoes, CISH is working at two levels – developing climate-resilient technologies and making efforts to come up with genetically improved hybrids. Many orchards in Malihabad had mangoes covered with paper bags this year, to control the impact of the heat. “This was only one of the ways devised to tackle the impact of heat. We have also come up with technologies to control the attack of pests on mangoes, as unpredictable weather may also trigger that,” he said.
    The institute has already released two hybrid mangoes – Ambika and Arunika. The varieties are genetically improved and were tested over a period before they were released for commercial production. Each is a cross of two types of mangoes.
    Ambika is a cross of Amrapali and Janardan Pasand, and Arunika is a cross of Amrapali and Vanraj, a mango from Gujarat.
    Two more varieties developed by CISH, Samriddhi and Madhurika, are ready for release shortly. Besides, at least 11 other hybrid mangoes may be up for screening by the institute to be released for commercial production.
    The hybrids are genetically improved, have high productivity and yield a better-quality fruit. They are also tolerant to heat waves and biotic stress due to the attack of pests and insects. The varieties developed scientifically are also nutraceutically improved. Along with this, CISH has also come up with improved varieties of Dussehri.
    It is by mid-March that a Dussehri tree usually completes its flowering stage, and within a week, the fruit may set in. In Dussehri’s cycle of growth, rain in March may be damaging because that is when the flowers just open and pollination takes place. “Rain may make flowers either drop or turn black, something that happened last year,” said Naseeb Khan, a mango entrepreneur in Malihabad.
In that case, some fruits that develop may be false fruits as they would lack seeds. Mangoes need a temperature between 27 degrees Celsius and 35 degrees Celsius to grow ideally in March and April. The varying temperature damages the fruit. Cloudy weather, high humidity and high velocity winds may further hit the crop. “In many fruits, this year, the seed may become soggy, affecting the taste. It was because of the extreme heat,” said Khan. UP accounts for over 23% of the total mango production in the country. Lucknow, Saharanpur and Meerut are the main mango-producing regions. In the last few years, mango varieties from the state have been exported to Singapore, Malaysia, the US, England and Dubai.

– Dussehri from Maal-Malihabad in Lucknow, Langda from Varanasi, Rataul from Baghpat, Gaurpreet from Gorakhpur and Chausa from Saharanpur grow naturally in UP.
– Dussehri, Rataul and Langda are GI tagged. The UP government has sought a GI tag for Chausa and Gaurpreet.
– Dussehri, Langda and Chausa are exported outside UP and India and are commercially successful and popular.
FIRST HYBRID MANGO VARIETIES
– Work to develop hybrid varieties of mangoes started in the 1960s at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi
– The purpose was to develop varieties that would bear every year and have high productivity, besides yielding good quality fruits.
– Amrapali (cross of Dussehri and Neelam) and Mallika (cross of Neelam and Dussehri) were the first hybrids.
– Dussehri is from North India, and Neelam is from South India. While North Indian varieties are biennial, those from South India bear annually.
– CISH CONSERVES AND PROPAGATES 775 MANGO VARIETIES
– CISH has the biggest collection of mango germplasm in the world.
– Many varieties are now extinct at their places of origin
– Collection started in 1975 when the institute started as the Central Mango Research Station.
– Kensington Pride from Australia was the first exotic variety brought to the institute.
– Today, it has 17 others, including Tommy Atkins, Sensation, Edward, Eldon, Keitt, Kent, Osteen, Palmer, Kitchner, Starch, Filipino, Lilly, Maya, Carabao, Kowasaji Patel, St Alexander & Prior-de-Amroesia.
– Mangoes have been sourced from nurseries and orchard owners over a period of time, and are used to develop new varieties.

    The sad passing away of Nawab Jafar Mir Abdullah

    On the sad loss of my friend Jafar Nawab Mir Abdullah let me reminisce about him with his pictures, my book covers and a favourite video of mine in which he speaks about Lucknow. Jafar Nawab was my lit-friend. He was the best guide on Lucknow that I ever come across. So fluent a Lucknowite he was that she always was at his fingertips. I gathered great insights from him while I was writing ‘Aadab Lucknow … Fond Memories.’ On the blurb of ‘Aadab Lucknow’, he had written a beautiful shair on Lucknow which I still remember … ‘Khuda aabad rakhe Lucknow phir bhi ganimat hai nazar koi na koi aachi surat aa he jati hai.’

    Nawab sahab also helped me out with the story of Wajid-Ali-Shah in my short stories book titled ‘Mirage.’ In another book of mine recently published, titled, ‘Áwadh Assam and Dalai Lama … The Kalachakra,’ he wrote a fascinating blurb which is below on the cover page of the book. A pass out of Lamartiniere School Lucknow he was in every sense an unfading icon of the city of Lucknow. Next time when I think of writing about Lucknow I wouldn’t know whom to go to. He was a true pundit on Lucknow and an actor par excellence when it came to those typical Lucknawai-nawabi characters of the city. He acted in many movies emanating out of the city culture. There won’t be another saral or easy ‘Nawab’ like him. Just as he will miss Lucknow from heaven the heaven of Lucknow too shall miss him from below. May he rest in peace.😂

    Obituary: Recently I lost a very dear friend of mine. Mitra Prashant … You’ll, always be missed. I’m drenched in your memories, galore. Our childhood was laced in deep friendship. An ace driver in you that I always admired, and your love for car was unparalleled, and that brought about the abject finesse, in our childhood bond. I recollect, in the 70s, you could relate, off hand, vehicle number plates, to their owners by heart while they were parked in the market or movie theatres … Jesus what a photogenic memory you had. I have memories abound, of you, my friend, beginning, those rendezvous, and gallivants, to all those dinghy and sunshine corners, and niches of Lucknow in bikes and cars and those long drives in and out of the city. And who can forget … Hazratganj, the Kababs of Shekhwat, the chowmein of the Chinese restaurant the name of which escapes me and the great old Ranjana and Royal Cafe and topping among them was, the great drive-in … the Rovers. But then came the axe of career when I had to leave Lucknow but those fond and inextricable memories went along with me, and even stayed with you roundly. Just as one leans and feels about one’s family, so does one lean and feel about a dear friend like you. Not much a helpless friend like me can do for you now, but yes, he will always pray for your sadgati in all earnestness. May you rest in peace while your memories will be alive in me. My salute to you.

    A TRIBUTE TO COLVIN TALUQDARS COLLEGE LUCKNOW

        Sir Auckland Colvin, Lieutenant Governor of the North West Provinces, while functioning as Lieutenant Governor of Avadh and Agra in 1889, conceived the idea of a school with the object of imparting education to the children of the British administrators and the landed aristocracy who were known as Taludars. That’s how this school rooted.

        It is one of the oldest public schools of India. It was established in the year 1889, and has an enrolment of 1400 students and an academic staff of fifty. Located on the peaceful banks of river Gomti. It sprawls over a sixty acre plot. The school colour is blue that depicts tranquility. It has three hostels—Avadh, Anjuman and Hind. Five houses—Ajanta, Nalanda, Sanchi, Taxila and Ujjain.

        It compares well with Rajkumar College, Raipur; Aitchison College, Lahore; and Mayo College, Ajmer. Lord Minto visited Colvin during its grand ‘Durbar Day’ (annual day) in 1908.

    In Lucknawi tehzeeb and fizai Avadh,

    Close to the splashes of Gomti,

    And … the throbbing vibrations of Lucknow University,

    Lies Colvin,

    In its glory and aristocracy.

    Colvin has the glamour,

    But without the clamour,

    It has the sprawling complex,

    But without the imposing edifice.

    *

    It has the magnificent drive way,

    That passes by the hearty hostels,

    It has the lush green tennis courts,

    And the fields where cricket is played galore.

    *

    The enclosed swimming pool,

    That keeps you cool,

    Where the lush green fields,

    The racing tracks,

    Convey the brass tacks.

    *

    Colvin resounds …,

    The glory of merit,

    Peaks of athletics,

    March past of NCC,

    In all its sincerity.

    *

    It has the proficiency of teachers,

    Alacrity of prefects,

    Astuteness of students,

    That drives the institution.

    *

    With IT college … in its territory,

    Kailash Hostel … in the locality,

    Lucknow University in the vicinity,

    And Hanuman Setu in its periphery,

    Colvin … educates Lucknow … royally.

    *

    Can’t forget the chemistry lab,

    Adjacent to the bio lab,

    Where … one had the crucibles and the beakers,

    And the other … dissection trays,

    Waiting for the frogs and the cockroaches,

    To be waylaid.

    *

    There was also physics in the syllabus,

    With Newton in the atmosphere,

    Where mathematics was the giant,

    That kept students in the frying pan.

    *

    And then you had,

    Shakespeare’s plays,

    Sohan Lal Divedi’s craze,

    And British and Mughal tirade.

    *

    Then there was the cycle stand,

    With college canteen … at its command,

    With cold drinks and chai,

    And samosas and deep fries.

    *

    The kittenish junior school,

    With its knowledgeable crew,

    That taught young children,

    With the least of rules.

    *

    And the big boys,

    In blue ties …

    And white uniforms,

    In five houses,

    Flocked around,

    In those majestic surrounds.

    *

    And every year … once a year,

    Colvin celebrates,

    Its ‘Durbar day,’

    When old boys gather,

    To rekindle their fire.

    *

    So thanks to Auckland,

    For having created Colvin,

    With noblesse oblige as the motto,

    That drives Colvin … in toto.
