This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

THE OTHER SIDE OF MIDNIGHT

Sidney Sheldon

This was a thriller published in 1973 by William Morrow. It was made into a film in 1977.

This novel is set between the two World Wars. The main protagonist of this novel is Noelle Page. She is born into a poor family that lives in Marseille, France. Since childhood she is made to believe that she is better than everyone else. She is fancifully devoted to her shrewd father. Who capitalises on her beauty when she comes of age and forces her to be the mistress of Auguste Lanchon, a well off boutique owner. As a result of which she is forced to have sex with him. She then comes to an epiphany that if she can control men she can be powerful. She decides to escape to Paris, where she is enchanted by an American pilot Lawrence “Larry” Douglas. He promises to marry her upon return from London. But when he does not return she develops pneumonia, and is saved by a Jewish medical intern Israel Katz, who selflessly helps her get back on her feet.

Furious over Larry’s betrayal, she aborts their unborn child in the most painful manner. She then devotes the rest of her life planning revenge against him. Meanwhile, Larry returns to the United States and marries Catherine, but their relationship is somewhat strained after World War II, since Catherine feels Larry has changed after his return.

Noelle uses the ongoing war to her advantage. She hires a private investigator and learns of Larry and Catherine’s marriage. She seduces two men, actor-singer Philippe Sorel and director Armand Gautier, and becomes a popular name in theatre and films. At one point she risks her plan to help Israel—the only man who has treated her with kindness—escape to Africa from the Nazis. She attracts the attention of Constantin “Costa” Demiris, a powerful Greek tycoon whose business extends to every industry in the world. She becomes his mistress and moves to his private villa. Where, she learns that Larry is having a difficult time adjusting to a regular life and his aggressive pilot skills make him unsuited to a commercial airline setting, and convinces Demiris to hire him.

Soon, Larry and Catherine move to Greece for his new job, where, Noelle discovers that Larry does not even remember her. She treats him poorly as an employee, pushing him to angrily rape her when she emasculates him. She gets excited and falls in love with him again. Larry cannot recall her claims of their past, but stays with her for her power. However, he becomes unsettled when his co-pilot and his other mistress, Helena—two people compromising his and Noelle’s relationship—suddenly disappear.

Noelle insists that Larry and Catherine, whose marriage is at its lowest point, divorce so they can be together. When Catherine constantly refuses and fails an attempted suicide, Noelle plots to kill her. Larry abandons her in a sea cave on their trip, but is forced to return for her when the coast guard notices him exiting alone. Catherine tries to tell the doctor about Larry’s plot to kill her, but the doctor thinks she is hallucinating. Catherine wakes up in the middle of the night and overhears Larry and Noelle plotting her death and she escapes during a heavy thunderstorm. She goes into a boat, but falls overboard, apparently drowning.

Catherine’s claim against them leads Larry and Noelle to be put on trial for her murder. In all of this Demiris is noticeably absent, but he visits Noelle in jail. He claims to still love her and offers to pay the judge off if she will stay with him forever. Towards the end of the trial, Demiris’s lawyer, Napoleon Chotas, informs Larry, Noelle, and Larry’s lawyer Starvos that Demiris has made a deal with the judge: if they plead guilty, Larry will be banned from Greece and will serve a short sentence in America while Noelle’s passport will be taken and she will stay with him forever. They both agree to the deal. However, after pleading guilty, they realize that there was never a deal made when the judge thanks them for having a conscience and admitting to the murder despite the lack of evidence against them. Chotas offers Starvos a position in his firm in exchange for his silence. They are sentenced to death, and Demiris, sitting in the courtroom, looks pleased. They are executed months later.

In the end, Demiris donates money to a convent near the sea, where a woman implied to be Catherine is kept, having been found on the shore.

Gorakhpur-The Cambridge and Oxford of Hindi language

Copyright@shravancharitymission

GORAKHPUR LIT-FEST ON 10TH & 11TH FEB, 2018

In the present context when it comes to English. I’m reminded of its illustrious fountainhead, that is, Oxford and Cambridge. It was from there that the language flourished and travelled all across the globe. In the same manner when I think of present day Urdu. I’m reminded of Lucknow, Delhi, Agra, Hyderabad, and even some Urdu centric cities of Pakistan. That cradled and nourished the language to par-excellence. More than, any other city in the world and therefore they happen to be its nerve centre.

In Gorakhpur … I saw that happening to Hindi. So, I would call it—‘The Cambridge and Oxford of Hindi language.’ In the two days that I spent there, participating in the Lit-Fest. It was Hindi-Hindi all the way and the best of it that I had heard up till now. So, the point to note is. Gorakhpur, which is otherwise a small town, happens to be a defining pivot of the Hindi language that is spoken by 300 million people across the world and is the fourth most spoken language of the world.

But, even in that loud cheer of Hindi. The organizers had done well by including, a rich, regional Indian language, such as Bengali. And the lit-fest platter became even more spicy with the inclusion of Nepali, a SAARC lingo and of course in the presence of the ever green language—English.

So, amid the composite cheer of these languages, my new title ‘Typical Tale of an Indian Salesman’ was launched in the presence of, senior journalist in Indian Parliament, Rahul Dev; film personality Raja Bundela; renowned Hindi author Dr Vidya Bindu Singh; and ex-M.P. Kanak Rekha Singh.

The book is now available for sale in Amazon, Flipkart, Onlinegatha and other stores both in paper-back and e-book format.

Rendezous with Yogendra Singh Yadav-Param Vir Chakra Awardee

Copyright@shravancharitymission

PARAM VIR CHAKRA AWARDEE—YOGENDRA SINGH YADAV

You cannot meet a better Indian.

I had a rare opportunity of meeting Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav on 11th February 2018, at Gorakhpur, while participating in the Lit-Fest there. Believe me. Yogendra is an electrifying, ironclad personality that is full of inspiration.

Param Vir Chakra (PVC) is the highest gallantry award for officers and other enlisted personnel of military branches of India. Which is given for the highest degree of conspicuous valour shown in the presence of the enemy.

Introduced on 26th January 1950. This award can also be given posthumously.   As of January 2018 the medal has been awarded 21 times. Out of which 14 were posthumous and 16 arose from actions in Indo-Pakistani conflicts. Of the 21 awardees, 20 have been from the Indian Army, and one from the Indian Air Force. There are only three surviving PVC awardees today. Out of which only two recipients are still in active duty: Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav and Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar.

Subedar Major Yogendra Singh Yadav is a Junior Commissioned Officer of the Indian Army. He was awarded the highest military honour of India that is Param Vir Chakra, for his 4 July 1999 action during Kargil War—battle of Tiger Hill in the Dras sector.

He was born on 10 May 1980, in district Bulandshahr of Uttar Pradesh. He is currently 38 years old. He is from the Grenadiers and his service number is 2690572.

The actions of the fictional war hero Karan Shergill played by Hrithik Roshan in the Bollywood film Lakshya on Tiger Hill. Are a screen adaptation of the heroic deeds undertaken by among others, the platoon of Yadav, and give a vivid description of their arduous journey to capture the strategically placed bunkers on the 5307 metre high Tiger Hill from Pakistan.

Only two Param Vir Chakra recipients are still in active duty: Subedar Yogendra Singh Yadav and Naib Subedar Sanjay Kumar.

    A big salute to them.

Musical Play: Mughal-E-Azam

A MUST SEE

Directed by

FEROZ ABBAS KHAN

A NCPA AND SHAPOORJI PALLONJI PRESENTATION

(A creation around the famous movie Mughal-e-Azam)

Mughal-e-Azam (starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala, Dilip Kumar, Durga Khote, Nigar Sultana, Ajit & Murad) is an epic historical film, directed by K.Asif and produced under the banner of Sterling Investment Corp Pvt Ltd (Shapoorji Pallonji). Prince Salim’s love for Anarkali (a courtesan) leads him to rebel against his father, Emperor Akbar. The plot involves a powerful drama around this confrontation. Interspersed with beautiful dance numbers. The soundtrack, inspired by the Indian classical music, comprises of 12 songs, and is considered among the finest soundtracks in the history of Indian cinema. Nine years in the making and costing ten times more than films made at the time, Mughal-e-Azam remains an all time top grosser of the Indian box-office.

Such has been the power of the film. That when it was re-released in colour in 2004 with six-track digital sound. It again ran for 25 weeks in theatres. Now, in 2016, for the first time ever in India, a classic film is presented on stage as a Musical Play.
