‘SHRAVAN CHARITY MISSION’ RECEIVES APPRECIATION FROM APOLLO HOSPITALS

We are delighted to inform our donors and well wishers. That Apollo Hospitals, which happens to be one of the leading chain of hospitals in India. Has accorded recognition to the work we have done for ‘poor children suffering from life threatening diseases.’

On 24^th December 2016, Apollo Hospitals celebrated their ‘Brave Hearts’ day, where the recognition was announced. It was a glittering function held in their auditorium at Sarita Vihar in Delhi. Where, apart from little brave hearts. The function was well attended by Doctors, officials, parents of brave hearts and NGO staff.

Shravan Charity Mission was registered in 2010. But due to unavoidable circumstances it could start work only in 2012. Since then it has touched many lives.

On this sterling moment we would like to thank Apollo Hospitals for their cooperation in bringing about the best in us. And we pledge to continue with our mission.

Ghaziabad: She is the reason why you reached office on time every day, got to your daughter or son’s school without getting held up in traffic and kept an appointment.

Dorris Francis was there every morning, rain, shine or smog, managing a chaotic intersection on NH-24 all by herself. Since Diwali, though, that ‘post’ has fallen vacant as a crippling stomach pain landed the 59-year-old in hospital. She was subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

“She is admitted at AIIMS and her condition is not good. she has stomach cancer.” Her husband Victor, said om Monday.

Thiers is a family of modest means, and Victor is worried about the cost of treatment. They have a small house in Ghaziabad’s khora Colony, not far from intersection where Dorris and Victor lost their 17-year-old daughter, Niki, to an accident in 2008.

Ghaziabad: Help is pouring in for the ‘traffic heroine’ of Ghaziabad, Dorris Francis, who is now undergoing treatment at AIIMS Delhi after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

After a report of her illness was published in TOI on Tuesday, people from across the country are reportedly contributing for Dorris’s treatment according to her husband, Victor. Dorris has been managing traffic on a particular spot at a busy intersection after her daughter, Nikki died in an accident there in 2010.

Victor told TOI that since morning he has been flooded with calls from people from different places asking after her and wishing her a speedy recovery. A sum total of about Rs 70,000 has already been deposited in Victor’s account. Besides, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, had offered free treatment for Dorris.

“I am overwhelmed by the support,” Victor said.

“In the morning I got a call from an elderly lady from Gurgaon, who asked me to collect a cheque from her house as she could not come down on her own because of her age.: Victor said.

Dr Gaurav Agarwal, unit head at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, has offered free treatment to Dorris. “We got in touch with her family members and have asked Dorris’s husband to share with us her medical report which we will discuss with our oncologists,” Agarwal said.

An NGO Shravan Charity Mission engaged in helping poor cancer patients has also offered help to Dorris.

“Nobody can tell what I suffer! But it is always so. Those who do not complain are never pitied.”—Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice.

It is indeed difficult to even imagine how much these young kids suffer. Yet they put up a brave face. They don’t complain of pain, and require no one’s pity.

Recently, we visited these brave kids in a hospital. They are diagnosed of cancer. All are a bundle of joy. But are oblivious of what they suffer from. They smile more than us. And, that is where they put us to shame, when it comes to raw guts. We handed over our contribution in the form of cheques, to all the three Parents, of these bravehearts.

My eyes went moist. When, I saw young baby boy Rihan. Who is five and suffers from NHL (Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma). He has been fighting cancer for the last six months. His father who works as a compounder has already spent more than two lac on his treatment. His income as told to us is around ten to twelve thousand per month. We wish Rihan all the best. And compliment his Parents for taking up this brave fight against cancer.

Garv Chaudhury, baby boy, age two years, was the second child, whom we met from Bulandshahr. He appeared every bit a joy. He was fast asleep when his mother tickled him to meet us. Surprisingly, he didn’t wake up crying. On the contrary he got up staring at us. He suffers from Pre-B ALL (High Risk). We wish him all the very best by praying to God Almighty. We would also like to compliment his father who is a marginal farmer and his mother who is a housewife in taking up this arduous fight against cancer. We wish them the best.

Next, we met Ayesha, a bright girl in her teens from Jaipur. Her father is self-employed and runs a workshop. His monthly income is around ten thousand. Ayesha is fighting cancer for the last one year and is diagnosed of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We wish her all the best in her fight against cancer. We also wish her Parents the very best in taking up the brave fight.

We all are so busy with our daily lives that we rarely think of such unfortunate and poor children who suffer from cancer. Should you want to contribute for the cause the account details are as given below.

MEETING YOUNG BRAVE HEARTS IN APOLLO HOSPITAL DELHI

Some things are hard to write about. Some causes are hard to pursue. Some realities are hard to accept. But that’s life.

Yesterday, we were in Apollo Hospital, Delhi, to offer financial help to a couple of children combating cancer quite stoically and that too with a brave smile. As a cancer activist let me confess, I often draw courage from such brave young children who fight cancer to the hilt. And I rate them as the ultimate in the rungs of courage.

Tanmoy Anand was the first child we met there. A male toddler, barely, a year and nine months, and suffering from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), hailing from Bihar. And it made me feel as if God is really cruel. Tanmoy appeared a bundle of innocence, joy, pain and hope. We wish him fast recovery.

The second child that we came across was Wamik Habib from Baramulla, Kashmir. He is a ten year old son, of one Mr Habibullah, a shopkeeper. Wamik was full of energy and no one could imagine he is suffering from Burkitt’s Lymphoma as he was busy speaking to his folks back in Kashmir while camping in the hospital with his father. We wish him a speedy recovery too.

Life strikes a different chord when you meet someone who is on the wrong side of health and as a result of which the philosophy of life changes at once. Each time I cross a hospital I feel God has left a very thin line between the patients inside and me, and I must be grateful to God for that.

Launch of motivational book: Refractions from the prism of God

‘Refractions from the prism of God’ was recently launched in the Lucknow Literary Festival 2016. The book is about a three time cancer-survivor who is young and poor. His name is Suresh and he hails from Tamilnadu and stays in Chennai. In spite of three different forms of cancer Suresh has the gumption of doing PhD in cancer biology and nurtures the dream of eradicating cancer by 2040. Normally one doesn’t like reading about cancer but our readers have appreciated the motivational manner in which this book has been written.

On this milestone occasion we would like to profusely thank Ms Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals Group for endorsing the book; Mrs Poonam Bagai, CEO & Founder of Cankids … kidscan, a pan India NGO for child cancer for blessing the book; and Mr Rahul Yadav founder of Yoddhas, a UNESCO award winning NGO and a cancer support group for hailing the book.

Dear Shravan

This is how we remember you on your 23^rd birthday

Always alive, as if you never went,

On the roll as if never spent,

Days have passed and years have gone by,

But to me it appears,

As if those bygone moments have just commenced.

And there from the heaven,

So much to watch,

But nothing to repent,

For soul is intact what if body is spent.

But in this game of body and soul,

For me there is so much to repent,

Having lost you to heaven,

And no one knows the extent.

There is indeed a difference,

Between the whiz of your soul and the touch of the body,

The touch is no more,

But the whiz is still felt.

My days still commence, with your pleasant memories,

That takes me beyond body and soul,

And thanks for your ‘whiz’ that comes each day, my son,

For that keeps me alive; rest I live.

SYNOPSIS

What goes on in a cancer patient’s mind is not known even to his near and dear ones, what to talk of anyone else. Maybe, only the invasive part is revealed, and the rest remains within the confines of the patient’s mind.

It is said about cancer, that only the ones who have seen cancer from close quarters are sensitive about it, and the rest are not. This includes cancer patients, their near and dear ones, Parents of child cancer patients, and also people who have lost their loved ones to cancer.

A normal and healthy person may not even think about cancer, forget reading about it, because your mind is clouded by a plethora of interesting things around you, where the word ‘cancer’ is somewhat uneasy and eerie. But there is still a need to communicate to the society about the incessant suffering of a cancer patient.

This book does exactly that. It communicates the mindset and sufferings of a poor, young and a three time cancer survivor Suresh from Chennai in a comforting and engrossing manner that readers would like to read. First time when Suresh got cancer he was six, and then he was okay for a decade and a half. But it struck again when he was twenty one and again when he was twenty four. All three were different types of cancer.

Suresh wanted to tell his story for the benefit of other cancer patients. Primarily, to make them understand the challenges of a young cancer patient. Where, he has his entire life in front of him in terms of his school, college, professional education, career and aging parents. When, he doesn’t even know how long he is going to survive. And in all of this he builds his determination and alters his mindset to take cancer head on.

The book has a motivational slant. That cheers you up with peppy poems and morale raising short stories, while it unfolds the grit and determination of the protagonist.

Number of cancer cases in the world, are on the rise and there is a great need to communicate the sufferings, trauma, and the challenges of a cancer patient to people in general. Also, there is need to communicate how to handle such situations, and more importantly make people realise that cancer is conquerable.

The author of this book is Kamlesh Tripathi and co-author is Dr Sujata Tripathi who had lost their younger son to brain cancer. The book is endorsed by Ms Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group.

A PASSIONATE ACCOUNT OF THREE TIME CANCER SURVIVOR
Just finished writing a book on a three time cancer-survivor from Chennai. The book is under print. It is co-published by Cankids a PAN India NGO for child cancer in India, and Shravan Charity Mission, again an NGO that works for child cancer in India. The book has been endorsed by Ms Preetha Reddy, Vice-Chairperson, Apollo Hospital Group.
