Cankids-Kidscan and Shravan Charity Mission, both leading NGOs that work for child cancer in India have jointly released the book titled, ‘REFRACTIONS … from the Prism of God’ on brave ‘Suresh’ a three time cancer survivor from Chennai. He was diagnosed of cancer when he six, and he comes from a poor family.

It is an inspiring story of raw guts, where Suresh has been carrying his dream to pursue PhD in cancer even after his long struggle in terms of his illness. He is always keen to encourage other young cancer patients and survivors from his own journey of life. He is an active member of Kidscan Konnect (Young cancer survivor group)

The book is setup in a motivational and positive tone that will only cheer you up, and motivate one to fight the disease, and even wade through troublesome life. A PASSIONATE ACCOUNT OF THREE TIME CANCER SURVIVOR
Just finished writing a book on a three time cancer-survivor from Chennai. The book is under print. It is co-published by Cankids a PAN India NGO for child cancer in India, and Shravan Charity Mission, again an NGO that works for child cancer in India. The book has been endorsed by Ms Preetha Reddy, Vice-Chairperson, Apollo Hospital Group. While we will unveil the book next week, below are some kind words for the author and the Co-author Dr Sujata Tripathi from the Can-survivor Suresh himself.

An excerpt from the book ‘Gloom behind the Smile’

It is amazing to see some cities and states losing people to other urban areas that are dynamic. This has also been happening across countries and continents. I guess this is how civilizations kept moving from one place to another. I was reading about a Sikh Guru. He once visited a village and stayed there for a few days and then prepared to leave. While he was leaving he blessed the village by saying ‘May you prosper by staying here only.’ Guru moved on and as night was setting in he camped in another village and stayed there for a couple of days and enjoyed their hospitality. While leaving he blessed the village by saying ‘May you prosper and move to other parts of the world.’ A keen follower.Who was watching. Asked the Guru as to why he had given two types of blessings. To his disciples in two different villages. The Guru replied that the people of the first village. Though looked after me, were not very cultured. Therefore, I blessed them. But prayed to God. That they should not move out and spread their culture. I found the second village well cultured. Therefore I wished to the Almighty. That these people should prosper and travel to other parts of the world. So that they spread the light of their sweetness and culture everywhere.

So true! And quite undoubtedly, when cancer strikes, it takes you to those long and dark tunnels, from where you need only a warrior’s might to return.

And, as a part of our NGO activity today, I met two bright young, smiling girls braving it out, with cancer. They were nothing else, but an unrelenting streak of energy and confidence. And I’m more than sure they will be out of the scourge soon. And, to help them smile we made a contribution towards their treatment. So join us in wishing them the best.

20150704_143024 — Neha KumariMiss Neha Kumari, age, 15 years, is from Katihar, in Bihar. She doesn’t have her parents and she is here with her uncle for treatment, who happens to be a student. The family income is a measly five thousand rupees. She is suffering from ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia-blood cancer) and the treatment will cost around rupees 4 lacs. We wish her all the best.

20150704_142324 — 2. Miss Sheetal Sharma, age, 13 years, is from Faridabad. Her father is a driver and earns a monthly salary of around seven thousand. She has bone cancer, for the past one year and the treatment, will cost around rupees 6-8 lacs.

We salute the uncle of Neha, and parents of Sheetal for tirelessly fighting the battle.

NGO ACTIVITY: DISTRIBUTING TOYS TO POOR ANGELS SUFFERING FROM CANCER

On two occasions we visited these poor unfortunate children in the hospital to distribute toys. Surprisingly, some of them were from foreign lands as far as Mauritius. The hospital letter speaks of our little effort in bringing about smiles on these otherwise dull faces. And at times we do wonder why such tiny little children get cancer?

Article: ARE RURAL SCHOOLS PLAYING WITH THE FUTURE OF OUR CHILDREN AND INDIA?

NGO Pratham has done well in bringing out an outstanding report called the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER 2014). ASER is an annual household survey to assess children’s schooling status and basic learning levels in Reading and Arithmetic. It is the tenth such survey facilitated by Pratham. This is the largest and most comprehensive annual household survey of children in rural India. It surveyed 16,497 villages located in 577 districts across India covering 341,070 households and 569,229 children.

POSITIVES AT SCHOOL LEVEL:

India, would love to hear, that enrolments in schools, are at a level of 96% and that too for the 6^th year in a row. So, most of our kids are now at least, sauntering down the school classrooms. And, to toast the occasion there are regular mid-day meals, to take care of their nourishment and over 80% of our schools have improved infrastructure. And the buck doesn’t stop here, as 75% of rural schools now have provision for drinking water, while 65% even have toilets, which is significantly higher than about half a decade ago.

NON-ACHIEVEMENTS AT SCHOOL LEVEL:

So, while we have made steady progress on the infrastructure side of our schools, what still remains deficient is on the teaching side – how well are these schools teaching their pupils? In depth details are available online. But here are some disturbing points:

Almost 50% of the kids in class 5 cannot read simple sentences that are taught in class 2.
50% of the kids in class 5 cannot do basic two digit subtraction which is taught in class 2.
And half the kids in class 8 cannot do even simple division that is taught in class 4

So then what is going on in these schools? As half of our school children after having spent more than half a decade in school cannot read basic sentences and do even simple arithmetic; when they could have learnt this in 2-3 years of urban education or in any private school. So do these teachers employed with these schools have any accountability?

SO THEN, WHERE ARE HEADING TO?

Are these schools responsible for creating a talent pool in our country or are we just to rejoice over enrollment numbers and mid-day meals and forget the core issue of educating our children. In the literacy chain of India this could be the weakest link. For what is literacy anyway? Is it just being able to write your name or learn the bare minimum skill of being able to read and solve those basic arithmetical problems. A skill that you will require lifelong. Or is it something much more than that.

Basic skill of reading and arithmetic is vital for survival in today’s world; as life in any form will require these skills. And if the basics are not strong. No matter how much of education you add in later years will only go for a waste. As the data explains adding number of years of education to such laggards will be of no use. And, also, such laggards though counted in enrollment will never get educated.

And, mind you the percentage of such students is very high, and at a staggering fifty percent. India could have lived with a miniscule percentage of such students but because it is half our students, it depicts an applecart failure in our education system.

ARTICLE: ACID ATTACKS BY SICK MINDS

Shouldn’t I call them depraved. Transcending even the emperors of Rome, and that to without a throne, who could be ‘vindictive, cruel and even insane’- say some ancient historians like Suetonius, Pliny and Cassius Dio.

A day after a woman doctor became a victim of acid attack. Delhi High Court has expressed concern over the ‘spate of acid attacks.’ So, yet again Nero fiddled while Rome burned? But who is our Nero? Surely, the Government in general, and the law enforcement department in particular, who allowed sale of acid off the shelf.

Establishment is now cracking the whip by developing a web application to regulate the sale of acid, with functionalities like registration of stockists and retailers, issue of licenses by the district administration and limiting sale of acid to individuals who furnish proof of identity and residence.

This may to a certain extent prune down unauthorized sale of acid but won’t sterilize the sick mindset. Union minister Rajnath Singh, also suggests of treating acid attacks, that cause serious hurts, as ‘heinous crimes.’

Good Samaritan NGOs have also held demonstrations at ITO demanding quick and swift Police action against the perpetrators of crime in Rajouri Garden. A medical report released, says the 30 year old doctor is traumatized and understands the prognosis of such a severe injury.

And, in all of this the court has again asked for status report from the centre and the state. But, what is more astonishing is the High Court’s reference to acid attacks, when it pointed out that Delhi Police has almost 15,000 posts vacant and therefore a we have deficient police force at hand.

Lack of adequate Police Force results in inadequate patrolling, which encourages sick minds and criminals to enact such ghastly crime; and the government attorney Sanjay Jain is further exhibiting government apathy by saying 15 proposals forwarded by Delhi Police for creation of over 14,000 posts “shall be looked into at the earliest.” So no matter how heinous is the crime, government lives by its age old rhetoric; and so these sick minds will continue having a field day.
