THE GENESIS OF KUMBH MELA

    I have just returned from the pilgrimage of Kumbh Mela at Prayagraj. Where, I even dared to take a dip at Sangam in this biting cold. Sangam happens to be the holy confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati. It is a blissful experience, to see so many Hindus gathered in such vast numbers. And this is when, one takes time off to think of the grip of faith, coming down from time primordial.

    Kumbha derives its name from both the original festival, being held according to the astrological sign “Kumbha” (Aguarius) and from the associated Hindu legend in which the Gods and demons fought over a pot, or a ‘Kumbh’ of nectar, that would give them immortality. A later addition to the legend says that after taking the pot, one of the Gods, spilled drops of nectar in four places where ‘Kumbha Mela’ is presently held. This is not found in the earliest mentions of the original legend of Samudra Manthan (churning of the ocean) as described in various ancient Hindu texts collectively known as the Puranas.

    The legend of Samudra Manthan tells of a battle between the Devas (benevolent deities) and Asuras (malevolent demigods) for amrita, the nectar drink of immortality. During samudra manthan, amrita was produced and placed in a Kumbha (pot). To prevent the asuras from seizing the amrita, a divine carrier flew away with the pot. In one of the most popular versions added to the original legend later, the carrier of the kumbha is the divine physician Dhanvantari, who stops at four places where the Kumbh Mela is celebrated. In other later additions to the legend, for which clarification is needed the carrier is Garuda, Indra or Mohini, who spill the amrita at four places.

    An entire temporary township covering 2,500 hectares has been constructed, at a cost of several thousand crores. In 2013, the last Kumbha, attracted, 120 million visitors , with 30 million congregating on a single day, Mauni Amawasya, making it the largest human gathering of the world. The Kumbh Mela is held at fixed cycles.

It is said that by bathing at the Sangam, during Kumbha, Moksha or salvation. It is for this reason that Mark Twain—who visited the Kumbha in 1895 wrote: “It is wonderful, the power of a faith like that, that can make multitudes upon multitudes of the old and weak and the young and frail enter without hesitation or complaint upon such incredible journeys.”

Since the dawn of time Kumbha has been a matter of great faith and faith indeed can move mountains.

India has 30 million people of Indian origin living outside India

A linguistic Survey of India reveals there are 780 mother tongues in India. Out of which, 480 are spoken by tribal or adivasis concentrated in the north-east and central-east of India.

Arunachal Pradesh has a population of 14 million, which is just about 7% of UP. Yet in Arunachal Pradesh, people speak in 66 tongues—one of India’s least-populated states is linguistically the most diverse.

With more than 210 tongues, India’s northeast is the world’s most linguistically diverse place.

The length of an average sentence in English has been reducing. According to a study, it came down from an average of 63 words in the 16th century to 22 words by the 19th  century.  One current estimate for sentence length is 14.3 words, a number that will no doubt go down even further, given the direction that technology is taking language to. Earlier in 1896 for the democratic nomination for the president, the average length of a sentence was 104 words, whereas, today politicians speak in sentences that are less than 20 words long.

    Dear Friends, I wish you all a happy Republic Day. In life, what we have we never value, and that could even be our own country India and its valued citizenship. But I certainly value the privilege of being a loyal citizen of this great nation. Just as I love my life I love this great nation.

    Think and relish the fact that you’re born into this mighty and enduring civilization which is definitely not a coincidence. But a divine semaphore, about which we all are unaware. India takes into its iron fold, the great diversity of all times, in terms of Parsis, Sikhs, Jains, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, and even some of those religions, that I may have missed out, or even people who in reality might not practice any religion, living together for generations. It has a wealth in trillions to the power of infinity that we all share and have been sharing.

    This humongous civilization called Indic … India … Bharat … Hind, has for generations stood together and I’m sure it’ll stay together till infinity. Any aberrations of course will be met by the collective strength of this burgeoning society called India.

    And, last but not the least, if at all, you are ever told, you’re not going to live for more than thirty days, the things that’ll immediately reflect on your mind are, the love for your immediate family, distant family, friends, your journey of life, your hometown and finally your nation that gave you your identity.

    So love thy nation and celebrate the Republic day.

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

    Book review found in one of the blogs published in the year 2013.

    It is story of a single woman. The scene of enactment is Delhi. As we all know in this devious world, women who are single, face a lot of problems. The problems could be social, professional and even sexual. The world in many ways takes them for granted. So within this framework this particular novel was written. the review starts with a few quotes out of the book as follows:

    “The canvas of human life had many hues but none sweeter than love. But it was also the most ephemeral. Where, material world ruled the roost. Qualifications, jobs, career, consumerism were the primary colours people chased and mighty materialism thereafter … to run after, all their lives.”

    If one had to read the book, ‘One to Tango’ without knowing about the author’s gender, one would confidently say that the book was written by a woman. Such is the intensity and detail with which the novel is written. But, Kamlesh Tripathi is a man and, for a man to write a book like a woman about a woman protagonist ‘Ria’—clearly its hats off to him!

    I say this because the novel reads almost like a journal with a women’s innermost emotions spread across the pages of the book. Many women who have seemingly crossed the age of marriage according to the superficial rules of the society might identify with this book. The review sheet further quotes from the book

    “She was once stunned at a feeler from one of her seniors that she ought to be available for a quickie as she too needs to satisfy her physical lust … a kind of open license … a never ending fright.

    Some of her married male cousins and friends had the birth right to hug and feel her body curves … if lecherous eyes could make love, she would have been mother of many bastards by now.”

    Ria is a single woman with a desire to get married like many bright intelligent working woman but, destiny has other plans for her. Suitors come and go, boyfriends woo and then leave only giving her pain and hurt. Ria thinks she is a jinx until that somebody special enters her life. But, is he the man of her dreams? His destiny has already been worked out for bigger things than just plain love, lust and relationship. So, where does that leave Ria? Does she finally get what she so badly wants and so very much deserves?

    Kamlesh’s narrative style keeps the flow of the plot moving even when Ria’s life stagnates. One wonders while reading the book—what more can the author offer? Is that it? And quite unlike other novels, the ending is unexpected, non-stereotype. That’s what makes the book stand out apart from the fact that the novel also single handedly concentrates on the theme of single women” and their personal pain. But, of course, the perspective differs from woman to woman.

Classified as a good read

    The book is available in Amazon, Flipkart and with Pigeon Books India. Basis the review I of course would ask you to read it. It is also archived in a GOI library in Delhi and a prestigious library of Chennai.

LONELINESS–I’M IN ELECTRONIC COMPANY

    My home is like a neat diagram of wilderness now. Things are only quiet here. Life’s hullabaloo is over. There aren’t any vital unanswered questions left in my life to be unraveled any more … barring the ultimate one—death. But surprisingly, I have been handed out, some stiff situations in life that I never asked for in the first place, and that of course includes, certain wayward realities … the most striking one being, loneliness. After deep introspection, it appears to me like those divine semaphores. There is a world of emptiness around me.  It’s taken me more than sixty years to reach this stage. But I didn’t have to struggle for it, the way I struggled for my career and the upbringing of my family. It came on its own, uninvited. I stay in a megapolis—infested largely by a swarm of people occupying those tall blaring buildings all around me. Yet I’m all alone. And what an irony. For in a jungle, I would have been with, unknown but ferocious animals. But in the megapolis I’m with familiar yet unpredictable human beings. Nonetheless, I really can’t decipher which is more dangerous.

    I have a time deprived family. They keep extremely busy. Mostly fire-fighting. So one day I approached God. Thinking he’ll give me company. But then he too has to run the universe, and so, he is very busy in his own world and doesn’t have time for me. Finally, I’ve learnt to live life king size, alone. So I keep busy one way or another. They say life has become easy, yet mind is never at rest. There is always something spooky about life that keeps hovering around me.

    No one comes to my house, and when I attempt to visit someone I’m told they are going out. The timidity to interface … thus continues. I’m told this happens with most of us but we rarely speak about it.

    But, ever since, flesh and blood averted me. My electronic friends have come to my rescue. I have them in droves, steadying my life. I start my day with them. In the night they take that extra pain to put me off to sleep. The smart phones and TV sets bring, so many of my electronic friends to my home each day.

    I now have electronic friends in the likes of Mr Bachchan visiting me all day long showing little gimmicks loaded with huge parables. Where, Arnab Goswami tells me all about the world. Even, Prime Minister Narendra Modi walks into my house in his own electronic attire to tell me how he is serving India and even Rahul Gandhi and Donald Trump are not far away. To top it all, entire Youtube, Bollywood and even Hollywood is at my command.

    Loneliness is the biggest scourge of the present day world. Yet life finds solutions for each catastrophe. Just as you can’t think of a life without flesh and blood, you can’t think of a life without your own electronic friends anymore. Can you?

    This is to cajole all those who suffer because of loneliness. Rise up … get up … do something to kill it.

    ‘Today I completed reading latest book of our friend Kamlesh. I got this book on 18th Feb 2018.
“TYPICAL TALE OF AN INDIAN SALESMAN” is an interesting read. I could easily relate to the narrative as Kamlesh & I worked as colleagues for a number of years. At times it sounds like an autobiographical account. I could relate to the situations, locations & characters as I also went through them albeit at different times. I thoroughly enjoyed & wish more successful books come through Kamlesh’s pen.’

    GOODREADS: Review by Anandh Sundar who rated it 5 star out of 5 … While I’ve not done frontline sales myself, this book gives me a much better appreciation for the experience of those who put their heart and soul daily on the company’s frontlines. Plenty of insights on expense reimbursement policies etc.

3. Manish

AMAZON: Review by Manish: he gives 5 out of 5 stars: Seems a professional autobiography of the author but very vividly describes the role of salesman at various stages of career, the conflicts inside the mind, external environment and how he finds a way with limited arsenal.

Onlinegatha: The book really inspired and guided me. The writing style and way of communication really touched me a lot. Recommended to all the entrepreneurs.
