His Holiness The Dalai Lama

The birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama is celebrated annually on July 6 by Tibetans and Buddhists worldwide. This will be his 90th birthday. He was born in 1935 in Taktser, a small hamlet in north-eastern Tibet. His Holiness is not only the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. He is also a global symbol of peace and compassion. His birthday is much more than a mere celebration of his life. Rather, it is an occasion to reflect on his teachings and the pristine values that he upholds.

Tenzin Gyatso was recognised as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama when he was just two years old. By the age of 15, he assumed full political authority in Tibet during a period of rising tensions with China. In 1959, following a failed uprising against Chinese rule, he was compelled to flee to India, where he has lived in exile ever since. From his base in Dharamshala, he continues to lead the Tibetan people spiritually and politically, canvassing for a peaceful resolution to the Tibet issue globally.

Despite his forced displacement, the Dalai Lama has never strayed from his goal of peace. He remains a man who continues to smile despite losing his kingdom. His advocacy for peace earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, recognising his efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Tibetan struggle. He has become an icon of conscience in a world torn apart by conflict and intolerance over the decades.

The Dalai Lama is regarded as a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara, the Bodhisattva of compassion in the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. His birthday is observed with reverence and gratitude as followers reflect on his teachings. They renew their commitment to ethical living, non-violence, and spiritual practice.

Celebrations usually involve prayer ceremonies, cultural performances, and community gatherings. Monasteries conduct long-life prayers for His Holiness, while laypeople light butter lamps, hang prayer flags, and offer incense. Songs, dances, and traditional Tibetan opera are performed in honour of the occasion. Elders share stories of the Dalai Lama’s life and the values he promotes. Children often dress in traditional attire.

In Dharamshala, the seat of the Tibetan government-in-exile, the festivities are especially lively. Tibetans and international visitors gather at the Tsuglagkhang Temple, the Dalai Lama’s main temple, to participate in religious rituals and listen to speeches honouring his contributions to world peace and the preservation of Tibetan culture.

Beyond the Tibetan community, many non-Buddhists and global admirers of the Dalai Lama also take the day as an opportunity to reflect on his universal preachings. Schools, universities, and spiritual centres may organise meditation sessions, peace talks, or humanitarian activities inspired by his teachings.

The Dalai Lama’s birthday acts as a global reminder of the power of kindness, empathy, and inner peace. His fundamental message — that all human beings deserve happiness and that compassion is the basis of true peace — resonates with people from all walks of life, regardless of religion or nationality. He often says, “My religion is very simple. My religion is kindness.”

As the Dalai Lama advances into the later years of his life, his birthday also prompts questions about the future of the Tibetan movement and the succession of the Dalai Lama institution. Despite humongous uncertainties, his ongoing commitment to peace offers hope and inspiration to millions.

In a world often perceived as fractured and unstable, the Dalai Lama’s birthday provides a moment to pause and reconnect with core human values. It is not merely a day to honour a revered spiritual teacher but also an occasion to renew a global commitment to compassion, understanding, and peace. Such magnificent personalities are born perhaps once in a millennium. My salute to him.

KABIR: BRIDGING FAITHS THROUGH VERSE

article, author profile, famous personalities, POETRY, Uncategorized, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Imagine a wandering poet in 15th-century India, reciting verses that touched both kings and commoners. That was Kabir Das, a weaver who spun not just threads, but words that would echo through centuries. His dohe (two-line verses) weren’t just poetry. They were life lessons presented in everyday parlance, cutting across the noise of religious divisions and social barriers. Even today, his razor-sharp wisdom hits home, whether you’re puzzling over life’s essential questions or just trying to be a better person.

Kabir is one of the most fascinating personalities in the history of Indian mysticism. Born in or near Benares to Muslim parents, likely around the year 1440, he became a disciple of the renowned Hindu ascetic Ramananda early in life. Ramananda had brought to North India the religious revival that Ramanuja, the great twelfth-century reformer of Brahmanism, initiated in the South.

At a time when the great Persian mystical poets like Attar, Sadi, Jalaluddin Rumi, and Hafiz were exercising a powerful influence on India’s religious thought process, Kabir dreamt of reconciling the intense and personal Muslim mysticism with the traditional theology of Brahmanism. Kabir was a significant religious reformer and the founder of a sect to which millions of north Indian Hindus still belong.

A hater of religious exclusivism, his wonderful dohe (self-contained rhyming couplets) survive to convey the spontaneous expressions of his vision and love for all religions. It is impossible to tell if Kabir was a Brahman, Sufi, Vedantist, or Vaishnavite. He is, as he says himself, “at once the child of Allah and of Ram.”

Kabir’s life is steeped in contradictory legends, none of which can be verified. Some originate from Hindu sources, while others come from Muslim traditions. They depict him as either a Sufi or a Brahmin saint. Nonetheless, his name serves as definitive proof of his Muslim heritage. A credible story portrays him as the biological or adopted child of a Muslim weaver from Benares, where the chief events of his life transpired.

The syncretic tendencies of the Bhakti religion had reached their full potential in the fifteenth century. The Sufis and Brahmins often had disagreements. Kabir, who was born with religious passion, saw in Ramananda his destined teacher. But he knew the chances were slight that a Hindu guru would accept a Muslim as his disciple. Nevertheless, he hid on the steps of the River Ganges, where Ramananda used to frequent to bathe. The guru, while coming down the steps to the water, trod upon his body unexpectedly, and exclaimed in amazement, “Ram! Ram!” … the name of the incarnation that he worshipped. Kabir then announced that he had received the mantra of initiation from Ramananda’s lips and was, by it, admitted to his discipleship. This led to protests by orthodox Brahmins and Muslims. They both were equally annoyed by this contempt, but Kabir persisted with his claim. It appears Ramananda accepted him. Though Muslim legends speak of the famous Sufi Pir, Takki of Jhansi, as Kabir’s guru in his later life, the Hindu saint is the only human teacher to whom, in his dohe, he acknowledges indebtedness.

Kabir, for years, remained the disciple of Ramananda. He participated in the theological debates which his guru held with the Mullahs and Brahmins of the day. He may or may not have submitted to the traditional education of the Hindu or the Sufi ruminative. And he never adopted the life of the professional ascetic. He remained grounded as a householder and weaver.

Kabir can certainly be considered a unifier, especially in the context of religious and spiritual thought processes in medieval India. His fearless critique of both Hinduism and Islam, as well as his rejection of empty ritualism and dogma, was par excellence. It places him among the most important voices of syncretic spirituality in the Indian subcontinent.

He was certainly an isthmus between Hindu and Muslim traditions. Kabir was born at a time (15th century India) when religious tensions between Hindus and Muslims were rampant. Despite this, his poetry flourished from both traditions. He used Hindu concepts like Rama and Karma. He invoked Sufi Islamic ideas such as Allah, soul-union with the divine, and the murshid (spiritual guide). But he was critical of both Brahmanical orthodoxy and Muslim clergy, often mocking the meaningless rituals of both groups. His criticism had an oblique humour which blunted the ill feeling, if any, like the verse below:

“Mo ko kahan dhunro bande/Main toh tere paas mein/Naa main deval naa main masjid/Naa kaabe kailaas mein/Naa mein koune kriya karam mein/Nahi yog vairaag mein/Khoji ho to turate mila-ihe pal bhar ki talaas mein/Kahyen Kabir suno bhaai saadho sab swason ki swans mein.” (O Servant, where are you seeking Me? I am beside you. I am neither in a temple nor a mosque; I am neither in Kaaba nor in Kailash: Neither am I in rites and ceremonies, nor in Yoga and renunciation. If you are a true seeker, you shall at once see Me: You shall meet Me in a moment of time. Kabir says, “O Sadhu! God is the breath of all breath.”)

Kabir’s mysticism was Bhakti in form, but Sufi in essence. He focused on the inner connection with God, a theme shared by both traditions. He believed in the emphasis of inner experience over rituals. He emphasised personal devotion (Bhakti) over temple rituals. Like Sufi mystics, he stressed on love, surrender, and the heart’s experience of the Divine.

Kabir wrote in vernacular Hindi (a mix of Awadhi, Braj, and Bhojpuri), not in Sanskrit or Persian. For example, “Guru Govind dono khade, kaake laagu pai/Balihaari guru aapne, Jin Govind diyo batay. (When Guru and God both are standing before you, whom will you bow to first? I am indebted to the Guru, who has shown me the path to God, hence, I will bow to him first.)

This made his teachings accessible to ordinary people across caste and religious boundaries, uniting them through shared human concerns such as life, death, love, hypocrisy, suffering, and salvation. Kabir is revered among communities such as Hindus, Muslims, and Sikhs. Several of Kabir’s verses are included in the Guru Granth Sahib. The Kabir Panthis is a sect that still follows his teachings and promotes interfaith harmony.

Kabir can be seen as a harmoniser. Not because he merged religions into one, but because he rose above sectarian identities and pointed toward a universal spiritual truth that transcended dogmas. His fearless voice called for a unity of hearts, not of institutions. He remains a timeless symbol of spiritual integrity, courage and harmony.

Kabir’s dohas (couplets) and poems are a key part of his fearless critique of religious dogma. He did not spare either Hinduism or Islam in pointing out hypocrisy, meaningless rituals, or spiritual arrogance.

Kabir wasn’t against religion per se, but against the ritualistic, dogmatic, and divisive practices that religions had become associated with. His criticism was not destructive—it was reformative, calling people back to the core spiritual experience, love of God, and inner transformation.

The Significance of Number 18 in Hindu Scriptures

article, facts, mythology, shravan charity mission, snippet, spiritual, Uncategorized, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Number 18 unquestionably is considered auspicious and has great significance in Hindu scriptures. This significance is highlighted in the great epic, the Mahabharata. While reading the holy epic Mahabharata, you will find that it is divided into 18 parvas (sections). Let’s not forget that the holy war of the Mahabharata, fought in Kurukshetra, was fought over 18 days. The battlefield witnessed 18 divisions (akshauhinis) of armies. 11 divisions were on the Kauravas’ side and 7 were on the Pandavas’ side. At the end of the war, which lasted 18 days, it is believed that only 18 prominent individuals survived. This underlines the transformative impact of this conflict, which had spiritual and moral dimensions.

The Bhagavad Gita, which is a sacred discourse delivered by Lord Krishna and is the most important part of the Mahabharata, also consists of 18 chapters. At the end of its 2nd chapter, Lord Krishna outlines 18 qualities that define a person of steady wisdom (sthita-prajna), highlighting the traits of one who has achieved spiritual victory.

Apart from the Mahabharata, the number 18 also appears in other key Hindu texts. There are 18 major Puranas and 18 Upapuranas, which include stories, teachings, and cosmological concepts. There are 18 Dharmashastras, guiding principles of law and ethics for righteous living.

The central idea of all scriptures of all religions in the world is the same. The prime idea is the victory of the higher being over the lower one, or righteousness over unrighteousness, or of the good over the evil, and of dharma over adharma. Ved Vyas had originally titled the Mahabharat as Jaya (victory). The word Jaya is in the opening stanzas of both the Mahabharata and the Gita.

Interestingly, in the ancient Katapayadi system (numerical notation system) of Sanskrit numerology, where letters are assigned numerical values, the word “Jaya” (meaning “victory”) equals 18. The original name of the Mahabharata was Jaya Samhita, and it appears in the opening verses of both the Mahabharata and the Gita. This numerical value emphasises the theme of spiritual triumph. To highlight the significance of the word Jaya, the number 18 is given a prominent place not only in the Mahabharata but also in various other Hindu scriptures. Thus, the number 18 is repeatedly used as an auspicious reminder to stay alert in our constant battle for inner spiritual victory.

Across all Hindu scriptures, the central message remains unchanged: the victory of dharma (righteousness) over adharma (unrighteousness), the higher self over the lower, and good over evil. The repeated use of the number 18 serves as a symbolic reminder of this ongoing inner battle—and the ultimate goal of achieving spiritual victory, or jaya.

The Story of King Bali

short story, spiritual, story, Uncategorized, vignette, , , , , , , , , , ,

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once upon a time, there lived a daitya king named Bali, also known as Mahabali, Indrasenan, or Maveli. He was the noble grandson of Maharaja Prahlad. Though born of a demon lineage, King Bali aspired to rule over the devatas (celestial beings). To fulfil his ambition, he performed a fire-sacrifice (Yajna) and received a boon of powerful weapons from the Fire-God.

Armed with these divine weapons, King Bali marched toward the Indraloka. Upon hearing of Bali’s intent, Indra—the king of Indraloka—sought advice from his guru, Brihaspati. On his guru’s counsel, Indra fled and went into hiding. Bali seized control of Indra’s kingdom and performed a grand sacrifice to gain even greater power than the devatas.

Aditi, the mother of the devatas, was distressed by the demon king’s rule. She turned to her husband, the great sage Kashyapa, for help. He advised her to observe payovrata—a vow of subsisting only on milk for a set period—to please Lord Vishnu. “Only Lord Vishnu can help us,” he said.

Pleased with Aditi’s devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before her and promised, “I will take birth as your son and protect the devatas.” Aditi was overjoyed. In time, Lord Vishnu incarnated as her son, Vamana, a dwarf brahman. All the devatas and sages came to greet the divine child.

Sage Brihaspati conducted Vamana’s upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony), while Yamaraja chanted the Gayatri Mantra. Indra gifted Vamana an umbrella; Brahma gave a Kamandalu (water pot). Chandra offered a shaft, and the seven sages presented Kusha grass.

Meanwhile, King Bali was performing the Ashvamedha Yajna to increase his dominion. Vamana, now a radiant young brahman, entered Bali’s palace. His brilliance astonished the king and the assembled sages.

King Bali welcomed Vamana with great respect and asked, “Lord, what can I do for you?”

Pleased with the king’s hospitality, Vamana praised his lineage and humbly requested, “Grant me just three steps of land, measured by my feet.”

Amused by such a modest request, Bali replied, “I am a king! You may ask for villages, gold, cows—anything you desire.” But Vamana smiled and insisted on only three steps of land.

Maharaj Bali agreed to the request, but his guru, Shukracharya, warned him, “This is no ordinary brahman. He is Lord Vishnu in disguise, come to destroy you and restore the devatas.”

Even after realising Vamana’s true identity, Bali stood firm in his promise. He chose to honour his word over his guru’s warning. He performed the ritual and granted Vamana the three steps of land.

At once, Lord Vamana began to grow—taller and taller—until his form encompassed the entire earth with his first step. The galaxies became his crown. As he grew further, they became his necklace, waistband, and anklets. With his second step, he covered all the worlds.

Then Vamana turned to Bali and asked, “Where is the land for my third step?”

In a gesture of absolute surrender, King Bali offered his head for the final step. Touched by Bali’s devotion and integrity, Lord Vamana blessed him and granted him rule over the lower realms, promising, “I will be your gatekeeper, so you may always have my darshan.”

The devatas showered flowers from the heavens and praised both Lord Vamana and King Bali for their selfless devotion.

King Mahabali is revered in early Hindu texts as a noble and generous ruler. His reign was marked by fairness, prosperity, and happiness for his people. It is believed that in the next Yuga, Mahabali will become the king of heaven.

In Kerala, Mahabali is remembered as the greatest ruler of all time. His legend forms the heart of the annual Onam festival. His story is also celebrated across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh as Balipratipada, Balipadyami, or simply Bali.

OSHO: BE MORE RESPECTFUL OF LIFE, YOU ARE PART OF IT.

article, short article, Uncategorized, , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Copyright@shravancharitymission

There is an intrinsic animality in man, a violence which he brings with his birth.     Even small babies will find some ants and will kill for no reason: killing is a joy. And the same… There are so many hunters who are hunting deer, lions and tigers, and they call it ‘game’. But it is strange: when a lion eats a hunter … then it is a ‘tragedy’. Strange! And the lion kills you with bare hands, and you kill the lion from far away, with guns, arrows, and all kinds of devices. You are a coward.     I used to stay in the palace of the maharaja of Bhavnagar, and his whole palace was full of lions’ heads, deer heads, and tigers’ heads on all the walls. And he used to be very proud to introduce people… telling who killed which animal – this one was killed by his father, this one was killed by his grandfather, this one was killed by himself, this was killed by his brother, by his son. In the same way, he also introduced those things to me the first time I stayed with him …     I said, “…. All that you have been doing is killing animals. What is the purpose? You have enough food; you don’t need to kill them.”     He said. “It is a game.”     I said, “But the game has some rules. Both parties should be provided with the same instruments. Both parties should be confronting each other in full light. You are hiding behind a tree, with a gun, and you kill an innocent deer, and you think you are playing a game? And what part does the deer to play in the game? Has he consented to play the game? And this is very unfair: why are you sitting on top of a tree?     “You are simply a coward, even with your gun. And this is not a game. This is simply your intrinsic violence, which is finding some way to destroy. And if you have any sense of humanity, remove all this nonsense from this palace! This shows your real face. These are not the heads of the animals; these are your heads.”     He could not understand …     Just as you are here, a guest, a tiger is also a guest. And it simply means that if you kill the tiger, you are insensate. I am not concerned with the tiger, because it is going to die one day. I am concerned with you, because killing each human or animal or anything that is living, goes on making your heart a stone. And if your heart becomes a stone, a rock, then your spiritual growth becomes impossible. A rock will not allow you to reach your own being. Anything that stops your evolution in consciousness is evil- it is a sin – and anything that helps you to move towards more consciousness is a virtue. That’s the only definition that I can give to you. Be more aesthetic, be more sensitive, be more respectful of life, because you are part of it. Whoever you are killing, you are killing yourself. Your destructiveness is suicidal. Abridged from The Path of the Mystic, courtesy Osho International Foundation.

REINCARNATION OF DALAI LAMA IN A FREE WORLD

article, autobiography, Uncategorized, , , , , , , , , , ,

Copyright@shravancharitymission

In his recent book “Voice of the Voiceless,” the Dalai Lama has reaffirmed his stand on the issue of his reincarnation and succession—a matter that has long been a source of tension between him and the Chinese government. His comments in the book have again brought the issue to the forefront, highlighting the ongoing clash between the Tibetan spiritual leader and the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

The Dalai Lama explicitly states in the book that his reincarnation will not occur in China or Tibet under Chinese rule. He will be reborn in a free world, away from the Chinese Communist Party’s control. This is a significant statement because it directly challenges China’s desire to assert authority over the reincarnation process, a system the Chinese government has attempted to control for decades.

His Holiness urges his followers to reject any successor chosen by the Chinese government. This is a crucial point in the ongoing dispute. China has made several moves to control the process of selecting the next Dalai Lama, and His Holiness has long resisted this interference. The Dalai Lama’s spiritual authority, he believes, should remain independent of political control, particularly that of a regime that has heavily repressed Tibetan culture and religion.

In a statement about his reincarnation he also raises questions about the future of the Dalai Lama Institution. By stating that he will be reborn in a free world, he reaffirms his commitment to ensuring that the Dalai Lama tradition continues its traditional role of advocating for human rights and spiritual leadership. He suggests that his future reincarnation will help preserve the spiritual autonomy of the Tibetan people and continue their fight for freedom and justice in the face of ongoing repression.

Dalai Lama’s remarks in the book underscore the growing conflict between Tibet’s spiritual leadership and the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing has consistently sought to assert control over the process of selecting religious leaders in Tibet, including the Dalai Lama’s successor. This is seen as a ploy to maintain political influence over Tibet and undermine the Tibetan struggle for autonomy.

The Chinese government’s claim that it has the right to select the next Dalai Lama is viewed by the Dalai Lama and many Tibetans as an infringement on religious freedom and the cultural sovereignty of the Tibetan people. This has led to significant tensions between Tibetans in exile, particularly in India, and China, with the Dalai Lama being a powerful symbol of Tibetan resistance.

Dalai Lama’s message in the book reflects his enduring belief in the power of the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ as a force for good in the world. He envisions his reincarnation as a voice for the oppressed, an advocate for human rights, and a protector of Tibetan culture and Buddhist teachings.

The Chinese government views the Dalai Lama as a major obstacle to its control over Tibet, and is likely to be angered by such statements. For Beijing, the Dalai Lama is seen not only as a spiritual figure but as a political leader advocating for Tibetan autonomy, which it views as a threat to national unity.    The Dalai Lama’s comments continue to attract international attention, as they highlight the struggle for religious freedom in Tibet and China. His call for the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ to be maintained in a free world could galvanize international support for the Tibetan cause, particularly in the context of global movements advocating for human rights and religious freedom.

The Dalai Lama’s vision for his reincarnation outside of China and Tibet may have long-term consequences for the Tibetan identity and the future of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Should the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation occur outside Tibet, it could symbolise a shift in the Tibetan struggle, where the Tibetan people’s religious and cultural heritage is maintained in exile and outside the influence of Chinese Communist rule.

“Voice of the Voiceless,” is not only a spiritual work but also a political statement that addresses the future of the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ in the face of Chinese interference. By affirming that his reincarnation will be outside China and Tibet, he reaffirms his commitment to the Tibetan people’s freedom and spiritual independence. His followers are encouraged to reject any Chinese-appointed successor, and the focus on his reincarnation will undoubtedly continue to be a point of tension between Tibetan Buddhism and the Chinese government.     The book has further illuminated the Dalai Lama’s intentions to ensure that his legacy and the cause of Tibet continue in a free world.

    NO EFFORT GOES IN VAIN

Primordial times are privy to the fact that nothing is achieved in life without effort. The effort could be either positive or negative. The choice is yours as God doesn’t control your Karma. A negative effort could lead to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki, destroying it completely, whereas a positive effort could be the construction of the Suez Canal, which shortened the maritime distance considerably, between Asia and Europe, thereby accelerating the cargo and passenger movement by sea. And every inch of effort bears a proportionate result, as per the law of nature.

Hu Shih, a former Chinese diplomat to America who was also an essayist, fiction writer, literary scholar, philosopher and politician once said, ‘Life on its own does not mean anything – it takes on any meaning that you decide to give it. Instead of spending all day contemplating the meaning of life, we may as well attempt to do something that gives it one.

Be bold when making a case and cautious in seeking evidence; be earnest in all matters and solemn in your conduct. We must be firm in believing that today’s failure is yesterday’s lack of hard work and effort and that today’s effort and hard work will surely lead to tomorrow’s great success.

The moments when you are sad and disappointed are the times when you need courage and faith the most. You need to firmly believe that no effort and hard work ever goes wasted in this world. I may not be the one to succeed – yet no effort will go in vain.

Every part of yesterday makes up for what I am today; do not think too far ahead and grieve. From now on, I shall reap as I sow.’

The sane advice from the Buddhist Dharmapada is, ‘The effort is like a treasure. Those who make positive efforts are mindful, pure in conduct, self-disciplined, and live in accordance with the Dharma, have ever-increasing glory. Through effort, heedfulness, and self-discipline, the wise make a continent for themselves that cannot be submerged by flood. The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, while the wise guard his heedlessness as if protecting a gem.’

‘There is a story of effort behind every success’ says the Chinese venerable master Hsing Yun. He says ‘The name of the effort may vary. Just as, to succeed, one needs hardships; to be celebrated one needs pressure; to gain honour one needs to labour; to achieve one needs to sacrifice and be dedicated. An ancient tree survives wind and frost. A skyscraper is raised with money and sweat. An old business has its ups and downs. An old man is tested by misfortune. Those who don’t look back have no past. Those who don’t look forward have no future. Those who don’t seize the moment have no present. Those who don’t master themselves will not change the society.’

Hsing Yun further says ‘Repeated action becomes a habit, the habit becomes a character, the character becomes fate and fate rules your life and when you work hard, don’t worry about success or failure. When you have done your best don’t worry if you’ve failed, for no effort goes in vain.’

Here I’m also reminded of the Greek tragedian Sophocles who said, ‘Success is dependent on effort’, and have you ever seen an idle man succeed?

Maha Shivratri, meaning the Great Night of Shiva, is one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Supreme Soul, and celebrated annually on the 14th day of the waning moon in the Phalguna month (between February and March). The festival focuses on Lord Shiva. He is revered for his wisdom, power and ability to eliminate ignorance, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

At the core of Maha Shivratri’s celebration is the aradhana of Lord Shiva. In Hindu teachings, ignorance is considered the root cause of suffering. Suffering manifests when individuals become attached to worldly desires, attachments, and validations. The festival also highlights Shiva’s ability to conquer lust, not just in the sexual sense, but as a metaphor for all worldly attachments and cravings. In the Bhagavad Gita, these desires are described as an insatiable fire that leads to suffering. By overcoming these desires, individuals can achieve self-realization and deepen their spiritual connection.

A key mythological story associated with Maha Shivratri is the tale of Lord Shiva’s destruction of Kamadev, the god of love and desire. Kamadev tried to disturb Shiva’s meditation by shooting love arrows, but Shiva, in his anger, opened his third eye and burned Kamadev to ashes. This act symbolizes the destruction of desire and attachment. Shiva’s third eye represents a higher spiritual vision that allows him to see beyond the material world, revealing deeper truths and wisdom. For devotees, this myth signifies the goal of Maha Shivratri: to awaken their inner light and gain higher knowledge.

On Maha Shivratri, devotees engage in spiritual practices such as fasting, chanting mantras, and staying awake throughout the night. These rituals help individuals transcend material distractions and focus on the divine. Fasting and remaining awake symbolize vigilance and spiritual discipline while chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” and reciting hymns like the Shiva Chalisa to purify the mind and body. These practices are meant to deepen the connection with Lord Shiva and guide devotees towards spiritual enlightenment.

Maha Shivratri also commemorates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing the union of masculine and feminine energies, which maintain the balance of the universe. Additionally, it honours Shiva’s cosmic dance, the Tandava, representing the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. The dance also signifies the natural rhythm of the universe and reminds devotees of the importance of aligning with the flow of life. Shiva’s Trishul (Trident) represents various trinities: creation, preservation, and destruction; past, present, and future; body, mind and atman.

The festival also emphasizes the renewal of righteousness. According to the Bhagavad Gita, when righteousness declines, the Supreme Being manifests to restore balance. Lord Shiva’s role as the destroyer of evil and protector of the righteous is central to this. Observing Maha Shivratri encourages individuals to purify themselves, embrace virtues like honesty, charity, and forgiveness, and reaffirm their commitment to righteousness.

The worship of Lord Shiva is often performed through the Shiva Lingam, a representation of Shiva’s formless nature. Temples like those in Somnath, Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar, and Rameshwar are important pilgrimage sites, attracting millions of devotees. Maha Shivratri is celebrated differently across India and the world.

Maha Shivratri is a night of inner transformation. By fasting, devotion, and meditation, devotees purify their minds, bodies, and souls, creating space for divine light. This sacred night serves as an annual reminder that Lord Shiva’s wisdom illuminates the path to spiritual awakening, guiding individuals from ignorance to divine knowledge.
