    The heinous acts of ‘Thugs’ were called ‘Thuggee.’ They were organised gangs of robbers and murderers. The English word ‘Thug’ originates from the Hindi word Thug which means a ‘swindler’ or a ‘deceiver’.’ ‘Thugee’ entailed an act of murder and robbery of travellers. It was rampant in the northern parts of the Indian subcontinent.

    Thugs travelled in groups. There are numerous folklore about their origin. One recorded by D.F. McLeod an Anglo-Indian civil servant traced it back to the Muslim tribes originating from those who fled Delhi after murdering a physician. Another traced it to certain renowned Muslim families who fled after murdering a favourite slave of Akbar. These original Muslim thugs cultivated thuggee, amongst various communities and castes of Hindus. According to some other folklore, thugs were Kanjars or descended from those, who worked in Mughal barracks. Others blamed the rise of thugs on the disbanding of armies in the employment of Indian rulers after the British conquest. Thugs operated in gangs as highway robbers, first tricking and later strangling their victims.

    To take advantage of the victims, the thugs would join travellers to first gain their confidence. This would facilitate them to surprise and strangle the travellers with a handkerchief or a noose. They would then rob, kill and bury the victims. This gave the thugs the name Phansigar, one who kills with a noose. During the 1830s, the Governor-General of India, Lord William Bentinck and his chief captain, William Henry Sleeman, targeted the elimination of thugs.

    In physical appearance, the thugs resembled the travellers. They wore turbans and carried some baggage in person. Their attire would deceive, any traveller.

    The idea of ‘Thugee’ was to steal maximum loot without being apprehended. The thugs did not accost travellers until their own numbers were greater than their target. They first flattered the travellers they met, which gave them a chance to gauge how many valuables they were carrying. Thugs avoided committing thuggee close to their native place, so their crimes were difficult to discover. They pretended to be either Hindu or Muslim to fool their victims.

    They usually attacked in the evening. A common way was to distract their targets while attempting to strangle them from behind. They carried only a few swords for self-defence to avoid any suspicion. At times they even mutilated the corpses of their victims to avoid detection. The corpse was then hidden or buried.

    The leader of the gang was called Jamadar. They used ranks such as jamadar and subedar, to suggest that their organisation had a military construct. They spoke a secret language called ‘Ramasee’ to disguise their real intentions from their targets. Although strangulation was one of their most recognised methods of murder, they also used blades and poison.

    Thugs were made up of men, who inherited thuggee as a family vocation, as well as those, who were forced to turn to it because of circumstances. The head of the gang was based on inheritance with family members sometimes serving together in the same band. These thugs were known as aseel. Certain thugs, insisted, that beginners were not taught thuggee, by their own family members but by outsiders who were often more skilled and experienced. They were called gurus. Thugs usually kept their acts secret. There were female thugs too who were called baronee in their secret language Ramasee, while an important male thug was called baroo.

    Thugs often avoided, the killing of a victim’s child, instead they would adopt the child. At times they murdered women and children to eliminate witnesses. Some thugs avoided killing of victims they considered proscribed according to their beliefs and let other unscrupulous members commit the murder.

    It is on record that during the 14th century, a thousand thugs were captured and hanged on the streets of Delhi. Two-hundred years later Sher Shah Suri organised a cavalry of 1,200 men to keep them at bay. Akbar and his successors launched drives against the thugs, but it was only in the 19th century that Sir W. H. Sleeman succeeded in wiping them out after a relentless operation lasting seven years.

    The initial references to the thugs as a fraternity, rather than ordinary thieves, is found in Zia-ud-din Barni’s History of Firoz Shah written around 1356, where he narrated an incident of sultan Jalal-ud-din Khalji, having arrested 1,000 thugs.

    Poet Surdas, in his couplets, mentioned, robbers called “thugs.” The Janamsakhis, the legendary biographies of Guru Nanak, used the term thug to refer to a robber who used to lure pilgrims. Jean de Thevenot, a French traveller in his account referred to a band of robbers who used a “certain slip with a running noose” to strangle their victims. John Fryer an English doctor of the Royal Society, mentioned a similar method of strangling used by robbers from Surat whom he saw being given capital punishment by the Mughals in 1675. An edict issued by Aurangzeb in 1672 refers to a similar method and uses the term “Phansigar”.

    The garrotte (killing by strangulation) is often depicted as a weapon of the thuggee.  Thugs committed their murders with nooses of rope or catgut, but later they adopted the use of a length of cloth that could be used as a sash or scarf, and thus more easily concealed. This cloth is sometimes described as a rumal (head covering or kerchief), translated as “yellow scarf”; “yellow”, in this case, may refer to a natural cream or khaki colour rather than bright yellow.

    Thug’s preference for strangulation might have originated from a quirk of the law under the Mughal Empire that ruled most of India from the 1500s. For a murderer to be sentenced to death, he or she must have shed the blood of the victim. Those who murdered but did not shed blood might face imprisonment, hard labour and paying of a penalty—but they would not risk execution.

    A poison called Datura, derived from a plant in the Nightshade family, was sometimes used by thugs to induce drowsiness making strangulation easier.

    The “River Thugs” killed people which included Hindu pilgrims, travelling through the River Ganga, and were active mostly during the winter. Their vocabulary of Ramasee differed from the one used by the thugs on land. They used boats taken on lease from the boat-builders or a jamadar called Khuruck Baboo. Sleeman states that they tapped three times to give the signal to murder, which they always committed during the day. To avoid detection of a corpse, they broke its back and threw it in the river to be eaten by crocodiles and only looted money or jewels.

    By the 1870s, the ‘thug cult’ was largely extinct. However, the history of thuggee contributed to the establishment of the Criminal Tribes Act (CTA) of 1871. The CTA was repealed after India gained independence. The Thuggee and Dacoity Department continued to operate until 1904 when it was replaced by the Central Criminal Intelligence Department (CID).    Numerous Bollywood movies have been made on ‘Thuggee’, including Gunga Din (1939), Sunghursh (1968), and Thugs of Hindostan.

    Italian sailor Christopher Columbus completed four voyages across the pond (Atlantic Ocean) sponsored by the Catholic Monarchs, opening the way for the widespread European exploration and colonisation of America in the 15th century. But for Christopher, the Colonisation of America would have been delayed. Portuguese sailor and explorer Vasco Da Gama sailed to India through the Cape of Good Hope at the tail-end of the fifteenth century, becoming the first link between Europe and Asia; but for him, India would have remained undiscovered like some planet in the galaxy for some more time. Cartographer, explorer and British naval officer, Captain James Cook, became the first European to discover Australia, New Zealand and the Hawaiian Islands during his three voyages between 1768 and 1779 in the Pacific Ocean. But were they planned discoveries or accidental ones? Well, that’s not relevant now. What matters is the final result.

    Ralph Fitch and John Mildenhall were the initial Englishmen who travelled to India, around 1600. They were British merchants who came to India in search of trade opportunities. But no Indian thought of going in the direction they came from. Such iconic journeys and voyages were rare. But they inspired writers to come up with some famous novels.

   Renowned author Jonathan Swift fanned his creativity and penned ‘Gulliver’s Travels in 1726. Swift sent Gulliver on multiple voyages just like Christopher and Vasco. Surely he must have drawn inspiration from them. During his first voyage, Gulliver is washed ashore after a shipwreck and he finds himself a prisoner of a race of tiny people from the island country of Liliput, less than 6 inches (15 cm) much like the tiny Valakhilya Rishis in Bharatvarsh who too were thumb-sized but had great ascetic powers.

    Gulliver’s second voyage took him to Brobdingnag, inhabited by a race of giants. The grass in Brobdingnag was as tall as a tree. Gulliver is rescued by a farm worker who delivers him to a farm owner, who is about 72 feet tall and whose single step is 10 yards, reminding you of the mighty Veer Ghatotkach of the Mahabharat fame. The farmer exhibits Gulliver for money, and his young daughter, Glumdalclitch, takes care of him.

    While setting out again, Gulliver’s ship is attacked by pirates, leaving him stranded on a desolate rocky island near India (discovered by Vasco da Gama). He is then rescued by the flying Laputa Island (after he was left adrift by pirates).

    The next time, Gulliver returns to sea as the captain of a merchant vessel because he is bored with his assignment as a surgeon. On this voyage, he is forced to find new additions to his crew who, he believes, have turned against him. His crew then committed mutiny. After keeping him contained for some time, they resolve to leave him on the first piece of land they come across and continue as pirates. 

    After over a century of Jonathan Swift’s penning ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ in 1726, Benjamin Disraeli who later became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, wrote ‘The Voyage of Captain Popanilla’ in 1828. Did Disraeli get the idea of writing this novel from Christopher Columbus or Vasco-Da-Gama or Jonathan Swift or all put together?

    ‘The Voyage of Popanilla’ is an allegorical adventure story narrating the dream voyage of Captain Popanilla and his crew to distant lands and is a satire on contemporary society. It aligns with the genre of Menippean Satire. The wit is very direct, and the satire, though it lacks the teeth of Jonathan Swift, is surely rubbing. It contains hues of utopia, in which the author creates a confrontation between an innocent and happy life on a blissful Arcadian island in the South Pacific and the principles of Benthamite Utilitarianism, which Disraeli despised. Obliquely, the narration is a satire on utilitarianism, where the author through appropriations of sea-voyages tries to give a message to England where he later goes on to become the Prime Minister. A brilliant fiction again.

    French writer Jules Verne, in 1869-70, wrote Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, a classic in which ships of various nationalities sight a sea monster, which is speculated to be a gigantic narwhal. The U.S. government takes the lead in destroying the monster. It reminds you of the Bermuda Triangle, where ships and planes disappear under mysterious circumstances.

    Travel and voyage reminds me of the popular Indian song … ‘Duniya ki sair kar lo, Insan ke dost banker insa se pyar kar lo … Around the world in eight dollars’ from the Indian film ‘Around the World’ made in 1967. While travelling I pondered so much. Travel takes you to places, places are stark realities that encourage you to write. Writing encourages fiction and details of fiction lend verisimilitude to books. The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page … Saint Augustine.

No Effort Goes In Vain

    Primordial times are privy to the fact that nothing is achieved in life without effort. The effort could be either positive or negative. The choice is yours as God doesn’t control your Karma. A negative effort could lead to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki eradicating it completely. In contrast, a positive effort could be the construction of the Suez Canal which shortened the maritime distance considerably, between Asia and Europe, thereby accelerating the cargo and passenger movement by sea. And every inch of effort bears a proportionate result, as per the law of nature.

     Hu Shih, a former Chinese diplomat to America who was also an essayist, fiction writer, literary scholar, philosopher and politician once said, ‘Life on its own does not mean anything – it takes on any meaning that you decide to give it. Instead of spending all day contemplating the meaning of life, we may as well attempt to do something that gives it one.

    Be bold when making a case and cautious in seeking evidence; be earnest in all matters and solemn in your conduct. We must be firm in believing that today’s failure is yesterday’s lack of hard work and effort and that today’s effort and hard work will surely lead to tomorrow’s great success.

    The moments when you are sad and disappointed are the times when you need courage and faith the most. You need to firmly believe that no effort and hard work ever goes wasted in this world. I may not be the one to succeed – yet no effort will go in vain.

    Every part of yesterday makes up for what I am today; do not think too far ahead and grieve. From now on, I shall reap as I sow.’

    The sane advice from the Buddhist Dharmapada is, ‘The effort is like a treasure. Those who make positive efforts are mindful, pure in conduct, self-disciplined, and live in accordance with the Dharma, have ever-increasing glory. Through effort, heedfulness, and self-discipline, the wise make a continent for themselves that cannot be submerged by flood. The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, while the wise guard his heedlessness as if protecting a gem’.

     ‘There is a story of effort behind every success’ says the Chinese venerable master Hsing Yun. He says ‘The name of the effort may vary. Just as, to succeed, one needs hardships; to be celebrated one needs pressure; to gain honour one needs to labour; to achieve one needs to sacrifice and be dedicated. An ancient tree survives wind and frost. A skyscraper is raised with money and sweat. An old business has its ups and downs. An old man is tested by misfortune. Those who don’t look back have no past. Those who don’t look forward have no future. Those who don’t seize the moment have no present. Those who don’t master themselves will not change the society.’

    Hsing Yun further says ‘Repeated action becomes a habit, the habit becomes a character, the character becomes fate and fate rules your life and when you work hard, don’t worry about success or failure. When you have done your best don’t worry if you’ve failed, for no effort goes in vain.

        Here I’m also reminded of the Greek tragedian Sophocles who said, ‘Success is dependent on effort’, and have you ever seen an idle man succeed?

        During our trip to Europe we visited the ‘Zuiderzee Museum’ in Provincie Noord-Holland. It was celebrating its 75th anniversary and becasue of that there were celebrations taking place in the museum every day. The streets and bridges in the outdoor area of the museum were decorated artistically and there were plenty of exciting activities happening in and around. Three popular traditional festivals were going on there. They were celebrated every year in a spectacular manner. And all around, on the former Zuiderzee King’s Day, a Flower Parade was also held during the Fair.

    THE OUTDOOR MUSEUM

        The museum took us hundred years back in time. It gave me a feel as if we had walked hundred years back, along the cobbled streets of the Outdoor Museum. More than 140 authentic historic buildings were seen in Zuiderzee, located on the bay in the North Sea. They form a complete village. There we met the inhabitants of Urk. We had a chat with the rag-and-bone man there and watched the craftsmen at work. Do you know how to make a net or a rope someone asked? I said no. I was feeling peckish after all those new impressions that I had seen? Then we treated ourselves to a freshly smoked fish at the fish smokehouse.

    AN OUTING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY!

        A visit to the Zuiderzee Museum is fun. One can call it and educational outing for the whole family. Discover the power and importance of water at the Waterworks Expedition. Play ‘Old Dutch’ games or let your imagination run wild trying to build a miniature float.

    INDOOR MUSEUM

        We met some former and current inhabitants of the Zuiderzee region at the exhibition … Sea of Stories. They can tell you all about their daily lives, their clothing, homes and leisure activities. And about their customs, feasts, and their eternal battle against the water and about the Afsluitdijk, (the dam) that changed their lives and everything. Be sure to visit the Ships Hall that has a unique collection of boats. Don’t miss the anniversary exhibition about the history of the development of the unique Outdoor Museum.

        Oh, it was an exciting trip.

    THE MAGIC OF READING, WRITING, STUDYING & BOOKS

        Reading, writing, studying and books have an interdependent relationship.     Author Francis Bacon in his famous essay titled ‘Óf Studies’ wrote something cardinal about studies, ‘Crafty men contemn them, simple men admire them, wise men use them; for they teach not their own use, but that is a wisdom without them and above them won by observation. Read not to contradict nor to believe, but to weigh and consider.’ In the lines above, the author conveys that individuals with a cunning nature despise studies whereas simple men admire studies. The value of any study lies in its utility. The wise people apply these studies in their practical lives. Studies do not teach their own use. It is the role of the intellect and wisdom to learn the usage of studies. Francis thought that a man should not read just to oppose, challenge and fight with others.

        He further says, ‘Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts, others to be read but cursorily, and some few to be read wholly and with diligence and attention.’ The author here is conveying that books should be read according to their importance in practical life. In the first category are the books that are ‘to be tasted’. This means that these books are just worthy of a quick reading. They are to be read for fun, and delight. This is so because when we read them, we do not seek some deep knowledge – for example, reading a comic book. In the second category, he places those books that are meant ‘to be swallowed’. These books hold widely accepted knowledge that cannot be opposed – for example the laws of gravity in science. You just have to accept them the way they are. The books in the third category are those that should ‘be chewed and digested’. This indicates that they contain philosophical ideas that should be read slowly and thoughtfully and we need to understand and imbibe them. Such books raise the bar of the reader’s thought process and enrich his intellect and they impact you long time. The reader can extract more than the actual content available in these types of books. I’m not too sure if the Holy Scriptures would come under the third category so I would like to place them in the topmost category. They are the core of our faith. We read them again and again and each time we learn something new from them. They impact us daily and over generations.

        About reading and writing, Francis writes, ‘Reading maketh a full man, conference a ready man, and writing an exact man. And therefore, if a man write little, he had need have a great memory; if he confer little, he had need have a present wit; and if he read little, he had need have much cunning to seem to know that he doth not’.

        By reading educative books a person gains knowledge about a variety of topics says Francis Bacon. Reading helps a person comprehend and explore areas which are otherwise too difficult to be explored by a common person. It expands the imagination of the mind and helps in conceiving ideas that might help in the progress of the world. In this manner, he is able to realize his full potential as a human being. Conferring with people helps to remove personal narrow-mindedness and biases. It also eradicates a lack of foresight in a person. Conversation with others makes one assess the possible benefits and drawbacks of a situation. His open-mindedness helps him to become a responsible man. This mentally prepares him to lead others and be ready to face future events. Writing is a creative process, which is also very scientific. It makes one precise and meticulous. The rules of grammar and punctuation, if not studied or followed properly, may lead to the twisting of the meaning completely. The same is also a fact in the case of vocabulary. Therefore, writing contributes to making people ‘exact’ or ‘precise’ in their actions.

        But the tragedy is only the lucky get to taste the magic of reading, writing, studying and books.

    Absolutely nostalgic … This is the precious picture of ‘BRIGHTWELL BUNGALOW SHILLONG’ which used to be our house in Shillong, now Meghalaya. I have myriads of smashing memories coming out of it, and some are quintessential … and par-excellence. I was schooling in St. Edmunds and running-riot in Brightwell Bungalow all my childhood. If you look beyond the bungalow there is a foothill. In the night many Malis, wood cutters while coming down the hill and the steep links used to sing in high-pitch, which I could hear from my room. They were mostly the daring and undeterred Biharis who often encountered wolf and jackals on their way down, just like pets. The morning sun was something to talk about. It used to enter the bungalow surreptitiously through the chinks in the curtains. Upon venturing out early in the morning, one could get to see the thick carpet of frost sprawled all over the lawns, sparkling as pearls. The sunset was early … Shillong being east, and it was over the straight line of the Lady-Haidari Park (picture above) that the sun sank into the yonder horizon. As time draws one can only reflect on memories that gave you flourish in life even if it was for some moments. Long live BRIGHTWELL BUNGALOW … long live Shillong.

    A 2017 report of the Travel and Tourism Council says that tourism contributed 9% to India’s GDP and 8% to its total employment.
