SHORT STORY: Alexander the Great

What is happiness? Can it be summarized on a formula? Let me refer the historic meeting between Alexander, the great Macedonian conqueror and the scantily clad Greek philosopher, Diogenes, who lived in a large ceramic jar on the streets of Sinope and thought nothing bad of begging for food and defecating in public.

    Happiness, for Alexander, was all about relishing the best of food, clothing, wealth and ever increasing power. Diogenes, on the other hand, believed that happiness is attained by leading a life of simplicity, free from the constant struggle, for wealth and power.

    When Alexander went to meet Diogenes, to offer him good food, wealth and accommodation, the wise man snapped back to everyone’s astonishment, ‘Move over! I am enjoying the sunshine. Don’t block it with your shadow!’

    The shattered prince was later heard saying, ‘If I were not Alexander, I would be happy to be Diogenes!’ It was apparent that Alexander was in search of happiness.

    Years later, at 32, on his death bed Alexander is said to have made three dying wishes of which the second is the most thought provoking and that was. ‘When my coffin is being carried to the grave, let the entire path leading to the graveyard be strewn with all the wealth of gems and precious stones that I have conquered and collected. Let the world know that I cannot take even a farthing with me. Ultimately, all these precious stones will turn into dust someday just like my body.’

    All our lives we keep running after silver, gold and diamond but the real happiness lies somewhere else which Alexander the Great learnt from Diogenes.

    Do not plan anything. Things will take their own course. Planning always presupposes frustration. When you plan, you create the seeds of frustration. Do not plan, just go on working. Let it come. It is always beautiful when it comes by itself. It is always fulfilling, never frustrating, because there has been no expectation. And when there is no expectation, you are never disappointed. The less you are disheartened, the more you can do. The more you are disheartened, the less you can do.

    So I say again: do not plan. Just go on. Let it come by itself. When we plan, we hinder the way of its coming, because of the plans we make, life cannot work. Our plans get in the way.

    No failure is failure, no success is success. Only our conceptions and predetermined plans make them so. If you fail in your plan, you feel disappointed; the ego is hurt. If you succeed, the ego is strengthened and it will plan more, ceaselessly, causing perpetual strain and burden on the mind. The ego is always afraid of life. In life we never know what is going to happen so we make plans for our security. But life continually disturbs our plan because we are not the whole and soul of life; we are only a negligibly small part of the infinite existence.

    The moment you start planning, you begin to compare and contrast. Doubts and fears catch hold of you. The moment you plan, the seeds of frustration take root. Now anxiety will follow. We make plans in order to be free from anxiety, but the plan itself creates anxiety. We become anxious because of our plans, our expectations.

     So do not plan, just go on. You do not plan your breathing, you just go on breathing! Let it come to you easily. All that comes easily becomes divine and nothing that comes with effort can be divine. The divine comes effortlessly. It is, in fact, coming all the time. Let it come. Just let go of yourself and see. Things will begin to move. You will find yourself in the midst of movement, but there will be no anxiety, then there will not be any trouble created for the mind. If something happens, it is all right. If nothing happens, then too it is all right. Everything is all right with a mind that does not plan, that accepts life as it is. Only then can meditation happen, otherwise not.

    If meditation has come to you, if something has flowered in you, the perfume will spread. It will work in its own way. Something has happened to you. You are calm and it ease, tranquillity has been achieved. That will do the work; you will not have to work. What has happened to you will draw people to you. They will come by themselves, they will ask about what has happened to you.

    Let others plan. You just go and meditate. Things will begin to happen, they must happen. Business is always tiring. It has no beauty, no joy. Meditation is not business; do not take meditation in this way. You have experienced meditation, you have come to the door; you have seen something, you have felt something. Let it go on—let existence work.

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

 

    ‘Fuck’ is a scandalous and a vulgar cuss word not meant for the civilized society. But then it has a lot to do with the making and breaking of life. Before, I move ahead let me refresh you with the meaning of this word. One of course is the usual one—to have a sexual intercourse. And running alongside that, it is also used, while expressing, extreme anger, or to add force, to what is being said. Some words get ostracised because of its dirty meaning. According to Oxford dictionary, fuck also means ‘your ruins.’ Let me now construct, two sentences for you, using the four letter word. One is.

  1. I don’t give a fuck—which means I don’t care.
  2. I give a fuck—which means I care.

    I am telling you all of this, to make you understand the book even better. The book has a long title supported by an even longer sub-title that goes as, “THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*CK—a counter-intuitive approach to living a good life.” by Mark Manson. Counterintuitive means, contrary to intuition, or a kind of common-sense expectation. I would call this book a wonder book, because the author converts the four letter word ‘fuck’ into a handy an appropriate life lesson for readers. New York Times and Globe and mail a Canadian chronicle have declared it, as a bestseller. The other word extensively used in this book is sucks which is an expression of disappointment. The book is priced at $17.99, published in 2016 by Harperone.   The book lives up to its title in all boisterousness. Mark Manson is a star blogger, with more than two million readers. He lives in New York City. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, is his, first book.

     For this day and age the book is a self-help guide, written by a super-star blogger. It charts the course for us, to make us happier and stronger. The real panacea of which is how to handle adversity better, and stop trying to be positive all the time. Of course the gap between the two is quite wide.

    For the past few years, Mark Manson through his ecstatically popular blog, has been working on correcting, our delusional expectations, for ourselves and for the world. He now brings his hard fought wisdom to this ground breaking book. Manson makes the argument that human beings by nature are imperfects and even limited. As he writes, ‘not everybody can be extraordinary—there are winners and losers in society, and some of it is not fair or your fault.” Manson advises us to get to know your limitations and accept them as they are. This he says, is the real source of empowerment. Once we embrace our fears, faults and uncertainties. Once we stop running from and avoiding, and start confronting, painful truths—we will begin to find the courage and confidence we desperately need.

    In life, we all have a limited amount of fucks to give. So, you must choose your fucks wisely. Manson brings a much needed, grab-you-by-the-shoulders-an-look-you-in-the-eyes moment, of real-talk, filled with entertaining stories, and profane, ruthless humor. This narration is a refreshing pat on the face of all, so that we can start living a more contented and grounded life.

     The book is a little over two hundred pages and if one goes at an uninterrupted pace, one could finish it within two days. It is in many ways a page turner written in lucid English quite easy to comprehend. It has long gripping sentences with appropriate pauses in terms of sentence breaks and well suited prepositions. The author has curtailed unnecessary flab in his narration. Within a para, the breaks are few and that gives a good flow of thoughts so very necessary for such life-lesson emitting books. Many sentences are somewhat unconventional, and more than that the thoughts are quite out-of-the-box. It is divided into nine chapters with sub-chapters. The book hinges on two prime words—‘fuck’ and ‘sucks.’

    Everyone believes. The key to a good life is a nice job, a sexy limousine, or a pretty girlfriend. The world keeps telling you over-and-over again, that the matrix for a successful life is to have more … more … and … more. Buy more, own more. You are constantly bombarded with messages to give a fuck about everything, and at all times. But the key to a good life is not giving a fuck about more; but giving a fuck about less, or giving a fuck about only what is true and immediate and important. I’m sorry for having used the four letter word so very often in this narration. But without which you wouldn’t have got the real feel of the book.

    The book has many interesting stories and anecdotes that I would not like to disclose in great detail. But yes of course. I liked the one about the Japanese second lieutenant and the Rock Star band. The book teaches that life is essentially an endless series of problems. Problems never stop they only get exchanged or upgraded. Happiness is a constant work-in-progress. It teaches you the value of suffering. Human beings often dedicate a large part of their lives to seemingly useless and destructive causes.

    It says happiness is a problem yet happiness comes by solving problems. And mind you, you are not special. The book defines certain values as shitty and even obsolete. It says a lot of time in our life is wasted in choosing. And of course failure is the way forward. It talks about action, inspiration and even motivation. Most of us commit to action only if we feel a certain level of motivation. And we feel motivated only when we find enough emotional inspiration.

    The book inspires you to believe that you’re wrong about everything. The author cites examples in terms of cartographers who some five hundred years ago believed that California was an island. Doctors believed that by slicing a person’s arm open (or by causing bleeding anywhere) one could cure a disease. Scientists believed that fire was made out of something called phlogiston (a combustible substance). Women believed that rubbing dog urine on their face had anti-aging benefits. Astronomers believed that the sun revolved around the earth. But then were they right?

    I would recommend this book. If not for anything else, at least it will advise you how to be comfortable in negative situations. While reading this book I was even reminded of my own poem that I wrote sometime back. The title of which is … ‘Bad times is a friend of all times’ published in a book titled, ‘Rhythm … in poems.’ I would give this debut book of Mark Manson eight out of ten.

DEAR SHRAVAN

I see you here and I see you there,

Even when I know,

All very well,

You aren’t … really there.

You do send me to despair,

But when I reflect,

 I still can recollect.

When you were born,

When I had thought,

We’ll be together … life long,

But that was not to be.

In your fight for life,

I remember with gripe,

Seasons had come, and seasons had gone,

Where time was kind, but destiny was strong.

Though time fought well,

 Yet destiny won,

As it snatched you away,

With its divine intent.

Now that you’re gone,

There isn’t too much of a song,

Except for the noble mission,

That you had brought along.

You often come in my dreams,

That brings me loads of serene,

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about

    This short story was first published on 18 February 1884, in a French newspaper named Le-Gaulos. The story is known for its twisty ending … or you could say ironic end which indeed is the hallmark of De Maupassant’s writing style. The original French title of this book is ‘La Parure.’

    The story revolves around, only a few protagonists. Prime being Madame Mathilde Loisel. Who always imagined herself to be an aristocrat despite being born in a lower middle-class family. And she describes that as an ‘accident of fate.’ She marries a lowly paid clerk who tries his best to make her happy but has little to offer. Through lots of begging at work, her husband is finally able to get an invitation for both of them to the ministry of education’s royal ball and party. Where, Mathilde refuses to go for she has nothing good to wear and desires not to be embarrassed there.

    Her husband is upset to see her displeasure. So, he uses all his money that he has saved or was saving to buy a hunting rifle, and gives Mathilde four hundred francs to use. Mathilde buys a dress. But is still unhappy because she has no jewels to wear along with it. The couple does not have much money left. Her husband suggests that she should buy flowers to wear along with the dress. But Mathilde disagrees. He then gets a brainwave and suggests borrowing of jewelry from her friend Madame Jeanne Forestier for the evening. Mathilde jumps at the suggestion and visits her friend at once and borrows the fanciest peace. A huge scintillating diamond necklace.

    They then go for the ball. Where, Matilde outshines other women both in looks and waltz. Even the minister makes a comment on her accomplishments. After attending the party when they return home early in the morning Mathilde discovers the ‘Necklace’ has gone missing. Mr Loisel immediately goes in search of the necklace but is unable to find it. The couple is aghast. They try to find a quick way to replace it. They go to a shop and buy a similar looking necklace for thirty six thousand francs. But in doing so the couple has to sell everything they owned to secure loans at high interest rates to pay for the it.

    Ten years later, one day while walking along the Champs-Elysees, Mathilde suddenly sees Madame Forestier. She still looks as majestic as she looked ten years back. But she barely recognizes Mathilde. Mathilde is now haggard and in a shabby state. Where, she, really has to introduce herself.  The two then get around talking. Mathilde recounts the story of losing and replacing of the necklace. In a way she also points a finger that it was only because of her friend Madame Forestier that she has lived a terrible life thereafter and during the last ten years.

    Horrified Madame Forestier takes Mathilde’s hands in her own, explaining that the original necklace that she gave her was a fake one or ‘made of paste’ and was nothing more than five hundred francs.

LESSONS;

    One of the lessons out of the story is the dichotomy of ‘reality versus appearance.’ Mathilde is indeed beautiful outside. But inside she is discontented with her less-than-wealthy status and lifestyle. This reinforces the idea that wealth means happiness. Mathilde is gripped by a greed that contrasts with her husband’s kind generosity. She believes that material wealth will bring her joy, and her pride prevents her from admitting to Madame Forestier that she is not rich and that she has lost the necklace she borrowed.

    Because of her pride and possession with wealth, Mathilde loses years of her life and spends all of her savings on replacing the necklace, only to find out that the original necklace was a fake one to begin with. The story demonstrates the value of honesty. If Mathilde had been honest to Madame Forestier she’d likely have been able to easily replace the necklace and enjoy the prosperity she wanted but never had.

    The story has been adapted by many movies, sound tracks and stage plays. Some are:

  • The Diamond Necklace 1921. A British film
  • A String of Pearls. (1926) a chinese film
  • Sound track played in All India Radio’s ‘Hawa Mahal’ in Hindi.
  • Vennila Veedu a Tamil play uses a similar story line as a main theme.

    The culture of ‘UBUNTU’ comes from Africa—I AM BECAUSE WE ARE

    I bring to you a very nice short story from Africa based on the motivational culture of ‘Ubuntu.’

    Once, an anthropologist, proposed a game to the tribal children of Africa. He placed a basket of sweets near a tree and made the children stand some 100 metres away. He then announced that whosoever reaches first would get all the sweets in the basket. When, he said ‘ready steady go!’

    Do you know what these children did? 

    They all held each others’ hands and ran together towards the tree. Divided the sweets in the basket equally among themselves and ate it and enjoyed it. 

    When the anthropologist   asked the why they did so, they answered,

‘Ubuntu.’

    Which meant

    How can one be happy when others are sad?

    Ubuntu in their language means …

    ‘I am because we are.’

    A strong message for all generations.

    Let us always have this attitude and spread happiness wherever we go.

    ‘Let ‘s have a ‘Ubuntu life.

    In my spells of loneliness I look for my happiness. When I get up early in the morning, it is quiet and lonely. This is when, I hope to come across happiness. The present moments are serenading and moving, where, you can even hear yourself breathing. It is still dark outside, but the dawn is about strike and where, the sun is gearing up to rise. The mood is dreary with all sorts of fears. As if, the heaven is far away, but the hell is about to strike, maybe anytime, during my life. People call it depression. But I guess that is only an impression. I slowly rise to sit on the bed. The silhouette on the side tells me, she is still, fast asleep. There is no pleasant reverie that tickles my funny bone. And like every day. I think of my God who has gone off to sleep and refuses to wake up. When I’m again struck, by that galling, every day whoosh that echoes once again … there is always so much to do, and how do I improve.

   My mind is all confused as if I’m still in the woods. I squirm in mild agita and hackneyed clutter. When, I decide to leave my cot. Pondering, slowly, I walk up to the loo. And where, the first thing I try and do, is to woo my rue, with a splash of water. That brings the first ray of happiness on my just woken up, face. I follow it up with another and then another. It tones me up.

    I decide to sprawl in the lawns for a while. Luckily I’m bereft of thoughts. So, the mind is empty. They say an empty mind is a devils workshop. But here, the devil is missing. Perhaps, he doesn’t believe in the age old proverb, anymore. He is in great demand. As, he has a lot to do, in terms of bearing out, the holy world, into turning unholy.

    My mind has nothing to say. There is no content fermenting in it yet. So, heart is at peace. The dawn is now alive and the sun is now behind the high rise. The loneliness has only expanded and with that happiness has arrived. But I know it is only momentary. I often wonder who distributes these merry tickets of joy. Barring the early morning cameo I’ve never seen her in full flow.

  She’s a mystery, happiness. She often comes uninvited. She follows no path. No paradigms and no rhymes. Nothing influences her, not even, tons, of holds in form of gold. People die for her and people lie for her. Everyone wants to hobnob with her. But she is aloof and beyond any loop.

    At times one gets to feel, even God cannot control her. But yes, there is something that can tame her.

    Says Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore—‘It is very simple to be happy, but it is very difficult to be simple.’

    So, won’t it better to look for happiness in divine simplicity than in nightmarish loneliness?

Watch your words. Words are everything. Even, the intentions of a well meaning communication could get derailed, if the choice of words is not good.

Recollect all those arrogant words that you have showered to insult others. They will return to haunt you someday. You will continue to live till you settle these bad debts.

You have no control over life and its changing situations. So in any given situation keep doing your best. That is all that is expected of you.

*

Cultivate a hobby. It is the only thing you can keep doing all your life between your personal and professional targets. It might even get you recognition.

*

In an explosive situation don’t take the route of offence first. For the offender might have the momentary win but then side effects of offence eats his life like a parasite.

*

If nothing makes you smile something is wrong with you.

*

By being a good listener you can gain both knowledge and even the depth of the person speaking.

*

Health is the biggest wealth. As long as you have health think God is kind to you.

*

While helping someone, remember. The helpee someday will attack you. To kill his gilt of having accepted help from you.

*

Try and see God in anything that helps you in life.

*

Avoid arguments for they are only a test of your vocal cords.

*

In silence try and catch the changing signals of life.

*

Go for long walks. It will trample all the negativity in you.

*

Take up something in life only with a lot of thought and due-diligence and then don’t just give it up so easily.

JOY

In search of joy I wandered,

Only to be squandered,

In pursuit of joy I plundered,

But while doing so I blundered.

*

Like an alluring dream,

Joy enticed me forever,

Into actions of demean, that played havoc,

With my simple serene.

*

In the voyage of life,

I thought important was the end,

And not the means to the end,

So I adopted various means,

Only to achieve the coveted end,

Until one day I realized,

End is only fruitful,

If it is through the right means.

*

And while running after joy,

I could only find the venom of waste,

That had left me high and dry,

To the rigors of depraved taste.

*

For joy was not any achievement,

Nor a prized possession,

And definitely not a status symbol,

And certainly not a glorious complexion,

But only a healthy mental condition.

*

For joy was simple,

Joy was visible,

Joy was small,

Joy was tiny and not tall,

Yet it took me a lifetime,

 To understand the meaning of joy,

And in that manner it was quite an overall.

*

I ambled and scrambled,

Wherever I landed,

In search of joy,

When ultimately I realized.

*

Joy resided in my timid smile and bold laughter,

In my sound sleep and little dreams,

Under my pillow and on the roof and even under my feet,

And above all in my radiant eyes, and state of mind,

Which all this while I couldn’t identify.
