SHORT STORY: CHILD REMAND HOME

I had once gone to a child remand home, to deliver a lecture, to children who were undergoing a prison term for the crime they had committed. Most of them out there, were under eighteen. They all had innocent faces. And had you not seen them in those confines, you wouldn’t have ever believed their indulgence into, such devious affairs.

The remand home had a strength of some two hundred children. They were kept under observation. Where, they all had a strict routine. Starting right from morning prayers, to physical exercises, to a good amount of time for their studies and even recreation. It had many classes with proper benches that I could see.

The warden of the home, as a goodwill gesture took me around. I was enjoying the trip as it was the first of its kind for me. We finally walked into the class room. All the children got up as a mark of respect for the warden. It appeared, the class had been in progress for some time now, and I was the last faculty.

I spent about an hour with the children. They were indeed quite bright, and I felt quite refreshed interacting with them. Finally, the class was over when these children left for their dormitories.

But before leaving the remand home. The warden spent some time with me over a cup of tea, quite explaining the reasons for the increase in child crime rate. I was shocked when he told me the story of a child in the red shirt. His name was Ashok and he was sitting on the last bench when I was taking my class. He appeared quite healthy, tough and even mature for the age of sixteen.

He had murdered his grandfather at the age of fourteen for which he was undergoing a sentence of three years since he was not an adult when he committed the crime. But the grapevine had something else to say, which the warden narrated to me.

Ashok’s grandfather, Kewal Ram had sixteen acres of farm land with two sons. One happened to be Askok’s father Ghanshyam and the other, his uncle, Sukhram. Both Ghanshyam and Sukhram were pestering their father for quite some time now to sell off their farm land and buy a few shops in the city as they were not interested in farming. But Kewal Ram was not interested in selling his ancestral land. When, the discord reached a flash point. One night after drinks they killed their father and got Ashok to own up the crime since he was only fourteen then. Because, as a juvenile delinquent he would be out in just three years. Whereas, they would have gone in, for a full lifetime.

SHRAVAN CHARITY MISSION VISITS APOLLO HOSPITAL DELHI ON 13^TH OCTOBER TO CONTRIBUTE FOR POOR CHILDREN SUFFERING FROM CANCER

SCM (Shravan Charity Mission) was formed to take care of poor children suffering from life threatening diseases. Since then it has been our constant endeavour to serve these bravehearts, so that, they can fight the dreaded disease with greater gumption. We also publish stories of such children. As a matter of fact, we have already published two such books with stories of two such patients.

On 13^th October 2018, SCM visited Apollo Hospital Delhi on a similar mission. Friends it is extremely heart-rending to see these young children suffering so much. And it is even more painful to see their parents seeing them going through it. And mind you parents of these children are mostly in the bracket of an income level of around eight to twelve thousand per month. Apollo Hospital has a ward for economically weaker section where these children are admitted for treatment. Our NGO has been working with Apollo Hospitals Delhi, since 2011 under the guidance of Dr Amita Mahajan, Senior Paediatric Oncologist. Till date we have made financial contributions for the treatment of over hundred children.

At Apollo we met the following children and their wards and handed over our cheques along with our best wishes. It is extremely important for us to ensure, that these children, suffering from cancer should smile and lead a normal life just as any other child. And there isn’t a more holy feeling than the thought of interacting with these poor bravehearts. In all we made financial intervention for treatment of five children on 13th October as detalied below. Sapna is female child, around 15 years old from Noida Uttar Pradesh. Her father’s name is Jagannath Dwivedi. He works for a private company with a meagre salary of around 7000/- month. Sapna is suffering from Osteosarcoma. Where, she has suffered the loss of her right leg, that was amputated recently … that reminds me of Arthur Hailey’s final diagnosis coming true. God what a pitiable scenario. Why do some people get everything in life and some need to suffer like this? Her treatment is likely to continue for a year. The expected cost of the treatment is going to be around 8-10 lakhs. May God bless Sapna and may God give strength and courage to her parents to take on this long battle.

Santosh is a four-and—a-half year old male child from Ghaziabad. He is suffering from ALL (type of blood cancer). His father is a driver, drawing a paltry salary of rupees eight thousand per month. He is likely to be under treatment for about three and a half years. The complete treatment would cost around 7-8 lakhs. Our blessings to Santosh for a speedy recovery and best wishes to his parents.

Ayesha is eighteen years old. Her father Abdul Qadir works as a labour in Jaipur. He manages with an income of rupees eight thousand per month. Ayesha is suffering from HLL, soft tissue sarcoma (a kind of cancer). Her treatment is likely to continue for 2 years. The treatment is likely to cost around 5-6 lakhs. We wish Ayesha a speedy recovery and to her parents a positive attitude.

Asharfi Parveen is male child of around 14 years. He is from Kishanganj, Bihar. Where, his father Atul works as a labour. His monthly income is around Rs 8000/- month. Asharfi suffers from AML (Blood Cancer). His treatment is likely to continue for one year and estimated cost would be around 7-8 lakhs. We wish Asharfi a speedy recovery and best wishes to his parents.

Kartik Garg is a male child of around 10 years. His father is Manoj Garg. They belong to Gopipur, in district Hapur, Uttar Pradesh. This boy is suffering from AML (Blood cancer). His treatment is likely to continue for a year. The expected treatment cost is going to 8 to 10 lakhs. We wish Kartik Garg a speedy recovery, and his parent’s peace of mind.

The bliss of sipping warm water

Follow this. It is very effective: Every morning have at least 4 glasses of warm water, while sitting. I repeat while sitting. This will prevent a lot of malfunctions in your body. To begin with. It’ll melt and drain the oil and fat that gets stuck in your system, act as a laxative, will help in digestion and even control some minor infections. Frequency of sore throat, if any will reduce. So, it is very good for smokers too and patients who use asthama inhalers. And, as and when you get an advance feel of a sore throat or you feel feverish start drinking warm water in advance for a couple of days. It will arrest the problem and you might not have to go to a doctor. It is also very soothing when you have to sit in air-conditioned rooms for long duration. I had read about it somewhere and had even seen a video, it is superb. No doctor will tell you about this in a coherent manner.

Second, If you wear spectacles, ensure you wash them on a daily basis, especially the lens. You will get to see the difference before and after washing. We normally think our specs are quite clean after just wiping it with cloth. But washing is a step or two ahead of that and will help in maintaining your eye sight.

NGO ACTIVITY on 29^th May, 2017

On 29^th May your NGO was in Apollo Hospital, New Delhi yet again to meet some brave hearts. It is believed children have a more positive attitude when it comes to fighting life threatening diseases—‘Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference—Winston Churchill.’

One cannot help but praise profusely these children and their parents for taking up this tough fight against cancer. This time we could not interact with them as they were too young and in their mother’s lap. Perhaps, they didn’t even know what has struck them. We handed over our contribution to the parents of these children while wishing them the very best. We are more than sure soon they would be up and about.

Let me briefly take you through these children:

Master Hardik Dangi, age 2 years. He is the son of Mr Jagdish Singh Dangi, who is a fireman and hails from Dattiya in M.P. The child is suffering from ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) which is a life threatening and has been in the hospital for the last 25 days and the treatment is likely to cost around ten lacs. Master Rudra Bansal, age 11 months. He is the son of Mr Sumit Kumar Bansal who is self employed and hails from The child is suffering from ALL (Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia) a life threatening aliment and has been in the hospital for over a month and the treatment is likely to cost around 8-10 lakhs. (Patient details 5^th floor T2 Ward, Uhid: APD1.0010733599, Patient IP No: DELIP 15716).

3. Baby Dhaniya, age 10 months. She is the daughter of Mr Saurabh Rajawat a primary teacher in a private school near Nagina Chowk, Dhampur. The child is suffering from Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia again a life threatening disease and has been in the hospital since three days and the treatment is going to cost around 7-8 lakhs. It gives me great satisfaction to share the fact that my book ‘GLOOM BEHIND THE SMILE’ has got entry into many prestigious libraries of the US including HCL technical services, Harvard College Library; Library of Congress, Washington DC and can also be accessed in the library of MIT, Massachusetts through worldcat.org. I began writing this book immediately after the untimely and tragic death of my son Shravan, as everything was fresh in my mind then. He had staged a long and valiant fight against Brain Cancer. But then he sadly succumbed to it leaving us all high and dry. He developed cancer, when he was just two-and-a-half. I was then thirty eight. The battle continued for 14 years and during that period he underwent as many as eight surgeries and a whole gamut of treatment that comprised of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and what not. My biggest challenge then was to keep a very fine balance between my career and my emotions. And of course keep myself solvent enough to meet the high cost of treatment. Further, as luck would have it, my wife in the process had to give up her career, as she was 24×7 required to look after the boy. Those days, I used to get a feel as if my entire life was in a deep muddle. Where, emotions had no place as that would have pulled me down on my performance. On the other hand outstanding performance would have earned me more incentives and salary and that in turn would have helped us in his treatment. So the whole thing was like a lethal chakravyuh that could have given anyone jitters.

In this tough stranglehold of time, me and my wife spent some fourteen precious years of our lives. In that duration I grew from thirty eight to fifty two, when he finally expired. Those were the toughest years of my life. The idea of scribbling down this page, is to go down the memory lane and express my deep gratitude once again to each of those Good Samaritans who came into our lives around that period time to take us through that very difficult decade and a half, even when their names are mentioned in the acknowledgment page of the book I would like to thank them once again. Because in such adversities it is indeed the collective bench strength of all your well wishers that pulls you through the upstream.

The book was intended to describe the grueling fight, our family had to undertake, in the India of those times to fight the dreaded disorder. And it also intended to convey, what it took, to see through 14 years of intense cancer, by an infant patient, who saw it through and through till he succumbed when he was sweet sixteen. It also detailed the issue of how noble companies fought for such causes for their devoted employees, especially, when Shravan’s medical insurance was not there, since he was just two and a half when he was diagnosed of cancer, clearly our fault. I’m sure the book has achieve the purpose for which it was written and most certainly it must have passed through many enlightened minds across the globe. Who, in turn will put their might together into this long standing challenge of cancer, for the world to benefit.

Here, I would also like to profusely thank all those, who helped me in bringing, this book to light. Where, I can’t forget my elder brother Ajit and his wife Aolla, my son Kartik, my colleague Bipin Bihari, Mr Vijay Sharma and my publisher Kaushal Goyal and of course my wife Sujata. For those of who haven’t read it. The book is not at all scary. On the contrary it will pep you up and make you realise there is always a way out in every situation.

Ghaziabad: She is the reason why you reached office on time every day, got to your daughter or son’s school without getting held up in traffic and kept an appointment.

Dorris Francis was there every morning, rain, shine or smog, managing a chaotic intersection on NH-24 all by herself. Since Diwali, though, that ‘post’ has fallen vacant as a crippling stomach pain landed the 59-year-old in hospital. She was subsequently diagnosed with cancer.

“She is admitted at AIIMS and her condition is not good. she has stomach cancer.” Her husband Victor, said om Monday.

Thiers is a family of modest means, and Victor is worried about the cost of treatment. They have a small house in Ghaziabad’s khora Colony, not far from intersection where Dorris and Victor lost their 17-year-old daughter, Niki, to an accident in 2008.

Ghaziabad: Help is pouring in for the ‘traffic heroine’ of Ghaziabad, Dorris Francis, who is now undergoing treatment at AIIMS Delhi after being diagnosed with stomach cancer.

After a report of her illness was published in TOI on Tuesday, people from across the country are reportedly contributing for Dorris’s treatment according to her husband, Victor. Dorris has been managing traffic on a particular spot at a busy intersection after her daughter, Nikki died in an accident there in 2010.

Victor told TOI that since morning he has been flooded with calls from people from different places asking after her and wishing her a speedy recovery. A sum total of about Rs 70,000 has already been deposited in Victor’s account. Besides, Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, had offered free treatment for Dorris.

“I am overwhelmed by the support,” Victor said.

“In the morning I got a call from an elderly lady from Gurgaon, who asked me to collect a cheque from her house as she could not come down on her own because of her age.: Victor said.

Dr Gaurav Agarwal, unit head at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Vaishali, has offered free treatment to Dorris. “We got in touch with her family members and have asked Dorris’s husband to share with us her medical report which we will discuss with our oncologists,” Agarwal said.

An NGO Shravan Charity Mission engaged in helping poor cancer patients has also offered help to Dorris.

It is indeed difficult to even imagine how much these young kids suffer. Yet they put up a brave face. They don’t complain of pain, and require no one’s pity.

Recently, we visited these brave kids in a hospital. They are diagnosed of cancer. All are a bundle of joy. But are oblivious of what they suffer from. They smile more than us. And, that is where they put us to shame, when it comes to raw guts. We handed over our contribution in the form of cheques, to all the three Parents, of these bravehearts.

My eyes went moist. When, I saw young baby boy Rihan. Who is five and suffers from NHL (Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma). He has been fighting cancer for the last six months. His father who works as a compounder has already spent more than two lac on his treatment. His income as told to us is around ten to twelve thousand per month. We wish Rihan all the best. And compliment his Parents for taking up this brave fight against cancer.

Garv Chaudhury, baby boy, age two years, was the second child, whom we met from Bulandshahr. He appeared every bit a joy. He was fast asleep when his mother tickled him to meet us. Surprisingly, he didn’t wake up crying. On the contrary he got up staring at us. He suffers from Pre-B ALL (High Risk). We wish him all the very best by praying to God Almighty. We would also like to compliment his father who is a marginal farmer and his mother who is a housewife in taking up this arduous fight against cancer. We wish them the best.

Next, we met Ayesha, a bright girl in her teens from Jaipur. Her father is self-employed and runs a workshop. His monthly income is around ten thousand. Ayesha is fighting cancer for the last one year and is diagnosed of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. We wish her all the best in her fight against cancer. We also wish her Parents the very best in taking up the brave fight.

SYNOPSIS

What goes on in a cancer patient’s mind is not known even to his near and dear ones, what to talk of anyone else. Maybe, only the invasive part is revealed, and the rest remains within the confines of the patient’s mind.

It is said about cancer, that only the ones who have seen cancer from close quarters are sensitive about it, and the rest are not. This includes cancer patients, their near and dear ones, Parents of child cancer patients, and also people who have lost their loved ones to cancer.

A normal and healthy person may not even think about cancer, forget reading about it, because your mind is clouded by a plethora of interesting things around you, where the word ‘cancer’ is somewhat uneasy and eerie. But there is still a need to communicate to the society about the incessant suffering of a cancer patient.

This book does exactly that. It communicates the mindset and sufferings of a poor, young and a three time cancer survivor Suresh from Chennai in a comforting and engrossing manner that readers would like to read. First time when Suresh got cancer he was six, and then he was okay for a decade and a half. But it struck again when he was twenty one and again when he was twenty four. All three were different types of cancer.

Suresh wanted to tell his story for the benefit of other cancer patients. Primarily, to make them understand the challenges of a young cancer patient. Where, he has his entire life in front of him in terms of his school, college, professional education, career and aging parents. When, he doesn’t even know how long he is going to survive. And in all of this he builds his determination and alters his mindset to take cancer head on.

The book has a motivational slant. That cheers you up with peppy poems and morale raising short stories, while it unfolds the grit and determination of the protagonist.

Number of cancer cases in the world, are on the rise and there is a great need to communicate the sufferings, trauma, and the challenges of a cancer patient to people in general. Also, there is need to communicate how to handle such situations, and more importantly make people realise that cancer is conquerable.

The author of this book is Kamlesh Tripathi and co-author is Dr Sujata Tripathi who had lost their younger son to brain cancer. The book is endorsed by Ms Preetha Reddy, Vice Chairman, Apollo Hospitals Group.

The book is co-published by Cankids … Kidscan and Shravan Charity Mission. Both are NGOs that work for children suffering from cancer.

The gutsy founder of ‘Cankids … Kidscan,’ is Ms Poonam Bagai who herself is a colon cancer survivor. But that has not deterred her. From taking up the noble cause of child cancer in India.

Sharvan Charity Mission is an NGO that was started by the author and the co-author in the name of their late son Shravan that also works for child cancer.

NGO ACTIVITY ON 14^TH FEBRUARY 2015

We all have read instances of ‘healing’ where God in some form heals a person from extreme suffering. And he may not be in position to do this each time personally so he sends his representative; and in today’s context it happens to be St Valentine who is primarily remembered for his ‘human concern’ which also includes sheltering of ‘love’ and those struggling for love.

And on this blessed occasion our NGO was back to those unfortunate poor children; in the poor children’s ward of Apollo Hospital New Delhi. As usual it was sad to see them in that state, when they had not even seen the world; but were lying on those cold hospital beds with beady eyes not knowing when they will go home and be able to lay their hands on their toys or on the shoulders of their friends who must be eagerly waiting for them.

And, I consider myself fortunate for having met these children and their Parents together with Dr Amita Mahajan, Pediatric Oncologist, Apollo Hospitals to give them cheer and hope in a small way. For they all were in the hospital for weeks where no one had come to meet them; and for a change, I felt so nice, seeing that my being was bringing a smile, on someone’s face.

It was heart rendering seeing little Jia age approximately 2 years suffering from acute leukemia; and after some cajoling she smiled at me; for anyone who came to her was only with medicines and injections that she hated, perhaps.

Brave Uzma age approximately 10, suffering from AML, form of acute leukemia was sitting on her bed, is when I approached her. She had gone through a round of chemotherapy. I could see her daring eyes telling me she will come out of it in flying colours.

Fayaz Ahmed from Bihar age approximately 3, suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia was fast asleep when her mother woke him up to meet us. He didn’t like it, but then I did hold him in my arms for a moment and passed him on to his mother.

And brave Tushar Khattar age approximately 8 years, suffering from brain tumour was lying on the bed from where he looked at me and smiled as if nothing had happened and that told me what courage is all about.

Brave parents with parched lips, dry throats, unruly hair and drained faces only projected their brute struggle and determination to take the fight against cancer to another level. May God give them the strength.
