SHORT STORY: THEOGONY: Clash of the Titans

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Theogony is the genealogy, birth, and the making of the pedigree of Greek Gods. It is a poem by Hesiod, an ancient Greek poet who lived during 8th – 7th century BC, describing the origins and genealogies of the Greek gods. It is written in the Epic dialect, a form of ancient Greek language, developed and used, as a literary language in the epic poems of ancient Greek.

According to Hesiod’s Theogony, at the outset of time, there was only Chaos. Dense darkness, covered everything, until the Earth was born out of Chaos and with the Earth came the mountains, the sea, and then the sky (Uranus) along with the sun, the moon and the stars. Later Uranus and Earth came together and gave birth to the Titans. But Uranus was scared that one of his children would take over his throne. So he enclosed each one of them in the depths of the Earth. But his son, Cronus, the strongest of the Titans, defeated him and became the world leader. He married Rhea, who gave birth to two gods and three goddesses: Hades, Poseidon, Hera, Hestia and Demeter.

But Cronus inherited the same fear as his father. In a manner, just like the “Kans Mama” in Mathura, who killed Devaki’s children, because he was scared that he might be killed by them? Cronus believed that one of his offspring would later take over his throne. So, when they were born, he swallowed them. (Just like the Nigas swallowing Lord Vishnu but in a different context). However, Rhea was also expecting a sixth child, but fearing, it would share the same fate as her other children, she secretly gave birth on a mountain in Crete (a Greek island in the Mediterranean), and hid the new born there. She named the child Zeus. She also tricked Cronus into thinking he swallowed this child too, by giving him a stone wrapped in swaddling clothes, which Cronus swallowed thinking it was his new born.

The Nymphs, as mentioned in the Greek mythology, took care of Zeus and fed the baby with milk of a goat. When Zeus grew up, he found his father and tricked him into drinking a mixture of wine and mustard, which caused him to disgorge the contents of his stomach. And with that, Zeus’ older brothers and sisters came out of Cronus fully grown! This is how the great Titanomachy (a series of battles) began—the war between the Titans and the Gods, with Zeus as their leader. This titanic battle lasted for ten years. The gods defeated the Titans and threw them into Tartarus, a dark and gloomy place, as far from the earth as earth is from the sky. Then the Gods fought with the Giants for the dominance of the world. The Gigantomachy lasted a long time as well. But the gods were again victorious. Thus, Zeus became the ruler of the whole world and he and the other Gods settled in Olympus.

The Gigantomachy was probably the most important battle that happened in the Greek mythology. It was a fight between the Giants or Gigantes, sons of Rhea and Uranus, and the Olympian gods who were trying to overthrow the old religion and establish themselves as the new rulers of the cosmos.

Difference between Gods and Titans. In short, they are all deities, but of different generations. The word “Titan” is used to denote a class of mythological entities that existed, before Gods were born, and Titans are usually used, to describe, the creation of the world. … Gods are the children of the Titans.

UTOPIA TO DYSTOPIA

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Utopia to Dystopia The world has become colourful. But the ‘Happy Prince’ is no more alive to see it. So is the swallow, who carried out his last orders, but died in the frost, at his feet, before escaping to Egypt. The lead metal statue of the ‘Happy Prince’ cracks in agony but his leaden heart still beats for his kingdom and his junta. But are there any such rulers, anymore? Well they are extinct. Perhaps, the author, you know, about whom, I’m talking, I’m forgetting his name, par naam me kya rakha hai, can rewrite the story again, while flourishing in the heaven. And, is there a ‘happy man’ without a shirt anymore? No!! I’m sure not. For the man now, not only, wears, shirts, but he wears colourful shirts, yet remains unhappy.

The Utopia is now seized of bright colours, such as red—blue, green and the saffron, and some adamant tenets, and philosophies, to rule with, the so called isms, the right wing and the left wing in the central hall of democracy. Have we gone back in time? Are we proving Hesiod’s Theogony as right, that said, initially, the dense darkness, covered everything, until the earth was born out of chaos? With earth came the mountains, the sea and the sky, the Uranus. Uranus and Earth came together and gave birth to the Titans. Later Titans and Gods both from the same lineage fought for supremacy where Zeus won just like Lord Krishna. But halt here. Take time off to think. For world leaders of today suffer from the same fear as Uranus, Cronus and the Kansa Mama of Mathura, who swallowed, there would be adversaries. Even Nigas tried swallowing Lord Vishnu but in a different context. The Robinhoods are extinct now.

The two biggest democracies are in the news often for the wrong reasons. There are too many Brutus’ that may put the original one to shame and the Bard into a wonder. To be or not to be. Much has evolved, but more is yet to come. Wait and watch. Be on the lookout for that happy man without a shirt, and the happy prince, with a lead heart that beats for the public even now.

SHORT STORY: PUNISHMENT OF SISYPHUS

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Beware of what you do in the journey of life as your actions can lead to a tough lifelong punishment. Here is an example of that, out of the Greek mythology.

There was once a King by the name of Sisyphus. He went on to annoy Gods with his trickery. As a consequence, he was condemned for eternity to roll a huge rock, up, a long steep hill, in the underworld, only to watch it, roll back, down the hill.

Sisyphus is a figure from the Greek mythology, who as the founder king of, Corinth an ancient city in Greece, became infamous for his general trickery and cheating death twice. He ultimately got his comeuppance when Zeus the Greek God of sky and thunder dealt him the eternal punishment of, rolling a boulder forever, up a hill in the depths of Hades the god of dead and the king of underworld. Sisyphus was the founder of the Isthmian Games believed to have originated as funeral games, and grandfather of Bellerophon, a hero of Greek mythology and slayer of monsters. Sisyphus is now best remembered as a poignant symbol of the folly of those who seek to trifle with the natural order of things and avoid humanity’s sad but inescapable lot of mortality. The adjective Sisyphean denotes a task which can never be completed.

SHORT STORY: Zeus … Prometheus and the Two Roads

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Zeus and Prometheus are Greek Gods. In the olden days, the Greeks believed Zeus to be the King of all Gods, and Prometheus, the God who made man. Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mankind.

One day, Zeus called Prometheus and said, “I command you, Prometheus, to show all human beings the way to freedom and the way to slavery.”

Prometheus said, “The way to freedom will be rough in the beginning, with many blocks and steep climbs. There would be no water to drink. There would be no pathways, only thorns. It will be extremely tough. And there would be dangers on all sides. But the road would eventually become a smooth and plain. There will be fruit trees and streams on both sides of the path. The difficulty will end. People will be able to rest. And finally they will attain freedom.”

Prometheus then added, “Contrary to this, the way to slavery will start out, as a smooth and plain in the beginning. The pathway will be full of beautiful flowers and very –comfortable. Just the opposite of the road leading to freedom. But later on, there will be only blocks, steep climbs and difficulty on all sides.”

In simple terms what Prometheus said was, Good things in life do not come easy. All those successful people around you have struggled extremely hard to get there.
