7/2/26 BOOK REVIEW
FRANKENSTEIN DOESN’T FEEL 200 YEARS OLD
Even if Mary’s creature is now Guillermo’s
An adaptation of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus is a Best Picture nominee for the Oscars, for the first time ever. But in the two centuries since Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley wrote her magnum opus, countless plays, poems, novels, comics, PhDs, parodies, alongside many, many films, have been inspired by it. A podcast galore enables you to deep-dive into whichever aspect of this medley you like. Four examples:
    The Director’s Cut-ADGA Podcast
In a conversation with Bradley Cooper, Guillermo del Toro says that he became a human being at age 7, when he went from church on a Sunday to seeing Boris Karloff crossing the threshold on TV. To be clear, Karloff iconically reprised the role of Frankenstein’s monster in three 1930s films, complete with bolts in the neck.
Then, at age 11, Guillermo read the novel, and thought, “Oh, that’s not the movie I saw.” He found Mary was “really brutal with the creature”. At age 61, he finally made his own movie. And now, you might think, oh that’s not the book I read.
The Big Picture – A Ringer Movies Podcast
Critics Sean Fennessey and Amanda Dobbins discuss how Guillermo’s whole movie career is about becoming increasingly fascinated by the idea that the monster is misunderstood, and must be looked at as just as human as you or I. That’s why, while Karloff is remembered for being terrifying, Jacob Elordi’s performance isn’t about that. It’s about interiority, “tall energy”, forgiving his “daddy”, and a superhero-ness.
Books in the Freezer – A Horror Fiction Podcast
Librarians Stephanie Gagnon and Jocelyn Codner note that Mary’s novel has been deeply injected into a popstream that isn’t always about high philosophy!
The 2024 romance-horror Lisa Frankenstein has a troubled teenager hooking up with a reanimated Victorian-era corpse. The 1990 absolutely bonkers and campy Frankenhooker is about a medical school dropout resurrecting his finance with the help of prostitutes’ body parts. The 2015 young adult novel The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein is a retelling from the point of view of Frankenstein’s fiancee.
The 1986 Gothic is an origin-story film, psychologising the real-life episode where Mary, Percy Shelly, and John Polidori were stuck at Byron’s villa on Lake Geneva, and bet on who could write the scariest ghost story.
Science Fiction
Storyteller Damien Walter thinks of the four of them as a kind of goth band, with Mary as the lead singer. She is just 19 when she writes Frankenstein (in less than a year), and invents the mad scientist and his Other archetypes.
Her prolific later career would include The Last Man, which invents the apocalyptic novel, about the near-extinction of humanity by a global plague. Btw that Lake Geneva holiday also saw Polidori creating the short story The Vampyre, which too was the start of a genre that would grow and grow.
But, Walter argues, it is Frankenstein that is the new myth for the age of science, where humans are no longer thinking of themselves as made in God’s image, but as products of evolution, as machines of flesh and blood. Mary is writing for people whose world is being turned upside down by experiments in electricity and the factories of the Industrial Revolution. And as science advances into AI, Frankenstein still remains the blueprint and warning. What have I done?

DONALD DUCK VS DONALD TRUMP

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Donald Duck vs Donald Trump both American citizens. The name sounds similar, but the feature and character so different—Donald Duck versus Donald Trump. One darling, one villain. Donald Duck waddled the world much before Donald Trump. Well, the anthropomorphic, white duck, arrived on the world scenario to entertain America and beyond America the world in the 20th century. And, the now, homonym sounding Donald Trump came later, reminding you, of the famous, star villain Ajit of, tinseltown Bollywood … ‘poora shehar mujhe loin ke nam se janta hai,’ and the hustle-bustle of the presidency made Trump immensely delighted … ‘Mogambo khush hua’—did Trump meet Amrish Puri, ever, anywhere?

Duck came to entertain, Trump to serve. Duck never lost but Trump did, finally. Donald Duck, remained in the cool confines of water, in his sailor shirt and cap, with his yellow-orange bill, legs and feet, whereas, Trump strode and helicoptered in his monolithic dark suits, contrasting ties, immaculate knots and the hefty self. The Duck was famous for his semi-intelligible speeches and his mischievous and temperamental personality, while Trump for his indelible tweets that ran his ministries. Donald Trump did not sensitise to the homonymous sounding similarity of his first name with Donald Duck. On the contrary he swallowed fire like the Greek God Prometheus, by joining politics. He made the world to feel he befriended Modi by hosting Howdy Modi in Houston, but scurried to copy Indira Gandhi, who for the lust of power imposed Emergency in 1975. Nor, did Trump remember to learn from the Great King Edward VIII, who for his kind of, morganatic, left-handed marriage, abdicated the throne of England when the Church objected to it, even when, Prime Minister Baldwin tried to intervene.

Post the attack on Capitol Hill, Donald Duck, might severe his homonym with Donald Trump. From the days of New Amsterdam and Lenape, America has come a long way. But a single Ravana is enough to destroy a sunehari Lanka. Donald Trump reduces himself to a figurine of Sisyphus, dealing with a Sisyphean task—where the hill is steep and bolder is huge. Watch out America your allies are looking at you with bated breath. Will the red dim and blue shine only time will tell. Meanwhile, Xi Jinping is having a laugh, but he is shrewd enough not to call it the last.

SHORT STORY: Zeus … Prometheus and the Two Roads

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Zeus and Prometheus are Greek Gods. In the olden days, the Greeks believed Zeus to be the King of all Gods, and Prometheus, the God who made man. Prometheus stole fire and gave it to mankind.

One day, Zeus called Prometheus and said, “I command you, Prometheus, to show all human beings the way to freedom and the way to slavery.”

Prometheus said, “The way to freedom will be rough in the beginning, with many blocks and steep climbs. There would be no water to drink. There would be no pathways, only thorns. It will be extremely tough. And there would be dangers on all sides. But the road would eventually become a smooth and plain. There will be fruit trees and streams on both sides of the path. The difficulty will end. People will be able to rest. And finally they will attain freedom.”

Prometheus then added, “Contrary to this, the way to slavery will start out, as a smooth and plain in the beginning. The pathway will be full of beautiful flowers and very –comfortable. Just the opposite of the road leading to freedom. But later on, there will be only blocks, steep climbs and difficulty on all sides.”

In simple terms what Prometheus said was, Good things in life do not come easy. All those successful people around you have struggled extremely hard to get there.
