    In Krishn’s divine lila, love reveals itself in many shades, not to confuse us but to awaken us. At first glance, Krishn’s bond with Radha may seem puzzling, especially since Rukmini was his lawful consort. Yet across centuries, temples, songs, and hearts remember Krishn not as ‘Rukmini-Krishn’ but as ‘Radha-Krishn’.
    Radha and Rukmini are two expressions of the Divine force. They symbolise two dimensions of love– the worldly and the transcendental, the composed and the consuming. They are not in conflict but in complement, reflecting the soul’s journey towards the divine.
Rukmini, the queen of Dwaraka, embodies maryada, the love that lives within the boundaries of dharm. She is Lakshmi incarnate, graceful and steadfast. Her love stands for a sacred partnership rooted in harmony, order, and purpose. She represents Apara Shakti, Krishn’s manifest energy that sustains worldly life.
Radha, the gopi of Vrindavan, is Krishn’s Hladini Shakti, his bliss, inner song. Her love transcends all boundaries. It is romantic, yes, but not merely earthly; it’s the soul’s cry for union with the Infinite. Radha is Para Shakti, the soul’s longing for the Divine, unbound by law or logic. She is not another love; she is love itself, raw and pure.
To a layperson, Radha and Krishn’s romance is emotionally relatable, a tale of longing, stolen glances, and secret meetings under moonlit skies. But to the seeker, it reveals a profound truth: that the soul, like Radha, yearns not for a husband or a protector, but for oneness with the Divine Beloved. This is why their love stirred saints and poets alike. Meerabai, too, wept and sang for Krishn, not as a king but as her eternal lover. Her devotion mirrored Radha’s fearless and boundless love, pure, sacred, and beyond the bonds of this world.
Rukmini’s love is the temple. Radha’s the sacred fire within. Rukmini walks with grace, and Radha dances in divine ecstasy. Both are true. Both are sacred. One represents Krishn’s presence in worldly life. The other reveals Krishn in the innermost heart. Sri Aurobindo saw Radha as the symbol of the psychic being – the soul’s flame moving toward the Divine. In this light, Radha and Krishn are not two lovers, but the seeker and the sought. Their union is not merely emotional. It is spiritual and cosmic.
Some traditions view Radha and Krishn as Shakti and Shiv, two forms yet ultimately one. Rukmini represents Krishn’s role in society and dharm. Radha is the inner music, his hidden joy. Both are divine movements of the same truth.
To truly understand Krishn, one must embrace both these aspects. He is the cowherd of Vrindavan and the sovereign of Dwaraka. He is Radha’s eternal beloved and Rukmini’s devoted husband. One whispers the mystery of divine ecstasy. The other upholds the strength of divine grace.
Krishn’s lila unveils love in its fullness. In Krishn’s world, love has many faces. Each of them is sacred. Through them, we do not just learn how to love. We learn how to become Love itself.

POEM: ARROGANCE

–There is no poison as pungent as arrogance. Shed arrogance and welcome the happy world around you—

There is some turbulence,
There is some disturbance,
Or is it my arrogance,
That disturbs my equilibrium?

*

It echoes through my hollow pride,
A voice I silenced, now amplified.
It mocks my mask, my constant cloak,
The louder I speak, the less I know.

*

There isn’t a song left in me,
For arrogance has consumed me completely.
Its embers once felt like a sacred flame,
But now it only burns in shame.

*

Still, a ray of sunlight dares to creep,
Into the room where I barely sleep,
Sneaking in through the silent skylight,
Scattering gold into my endless night.

*

It encourages me to open my mind,
To let the weight of falsehood unwind.
It whispers softly with no demand,
Let go arrogance and do not command.

*

It tells me to open my arms,
To embrace life without titles or charms,
To welcome the happy scenes around,
And leave the arrogance behind.

*

Nature says: I am on colourful display,
For eyes that wander, and hearts that stray,
I offer peace that cannot be owned,
But you must come to me unthroned.

*

But arrogance tries to forestall the interplay,
Building walls that keep joy at bay.
Like a vortex, it feeds on control,
Draining the light from my soul.

*

Yet the power of the skylight becomes immense,
When it allows the sunlight to shine,
Inside my once-armoured defence,
A quiet light, yet so divine.

*

The trees outside no longer condescend,
They sway like sages; they do not pretend.
Their wisdom lies in being still,
And bending gently to the will.

*

I see now: the path is not to reign,
But to walk through sun and storm and rain.
To learn, unlearn, and fall apart,
Until humility reclaims the heart.

*

So let the sunlight do its part,
Peeling arrogance from my heart,
In this open space, I start afresh,
Because I have miles to go,

Before I rest.

Panchatantra: The Curious Monkey

“Wow! What’s that?” The curious monkey asked his friends–fellow monkeys. The friends, looking in the direction he was pointing, saw what had attracted his attention. It was a log of wood.
“What’s so interesting about a log of wood?” His friends asked.
Instead of answering the friends, the curious monkey ran to the log and jumped on it. Looking at the wedge in the middle of the log, the monkey reached out to touch it.
A little further down, a group of woodcutters were laughing and enjoying their meal, unaware of the prank the curious monkey was about to play. They had been cutting this log of wood all morning and had managed to cut a part of it, but they had to take a break for lunch. Not wanting the log to close up again, they had placed a wedge in the slit to keep it open.
This wedge was what the curious monkey began to tug at, while the other monkeys stepped aside. Suddenly, the wedge snapped and the log of wood shut, trapping the curious monkey’s leg.
While all his friends ran away in fear, the sad little monkey sat there in pain, waiting for the woodcutters to return from their break.
Lesson: Unnecessary interference in others’ matters may interfere with the matters of your life.

MONSOON MELODIES

“The vibrant monsoon is a bonanza that revives the flora and fauna. Each drip and drop of rain feels like manna, falling from heaven and breathing life into Planet Earth.”

When the clouds occupy the sky,

And the day becomes overcast,

When the raindrops begin to fall,

My mind slips into a flashback.

*

When the downpour turns generous,

The world begins to hum in mellifluous,

The gardens swell with spirited life,

And streets flush clear, washed of strife.

*

The trees stand rinsed and tall,

Leaves shimmer in the rainfall,

Flowers beam their brightest hue,

The air feels clean, the world feels new.

*

My flashback swells and opens wide,

Revealing the joy I once kept inside,

The cool breeze brushes against my skin,

With the gentle warmth of life within.

*

The rainy day,

Pulls me out of my hideout,

For once,

Outside appears to be better than the inside.

*

In the slush and storm, I start my stride,

No longer wishing to hide,

The atmosphere becomes soothing,

When each moment becomes moving.

*

While sitting on the park bench,

I notice the droplet that lands on the shining leaf,

It remains there for a brief,

And then starts rolling down the leaf,

Taking with it all the heat.

*

The scourge of global warming,

Momentarily cools under the heavy downpour,

But the Hydra-Headed Monster,

Will soon rise, fears Mother Earth.

*

Life transforms and becomes mellifluent,
Thoughts become benevolent,
The air, though soaked, feels light and delirious,
Each moment is sweetly reminiscent.

*

The beauty of life sleeps in off time,

It awakens when the monsoon arrives,

It dresses up when the showers go by,

So enjoy the rain, the biggest gift to mankind.

The Story of King Bali

    Once upon a time, there lived a daitya king named Bali, also known as Mahabali, Indrasenan, or Maveli. He was the noble grandson of Maharaja Prahlad. Though born of a demon lineage, King Bali aspired to rule over the devatas (celestial beings). To fulfil his ambition, he performed a fire-sacrifice (Yajna) and received a boon of powerful weapons from the Fire-God.

    Armed with these divine weapons, King Bali marched toward the Indraloka. Upon hearing of Bali’s intent, Indra—the king of Indraloka—sought advice from his guru, Brihaspati. On his guru’s counsel, Indra fled and went into hiding. Bali seized control of Indra’s kingdom and performed a grand sacrifice to gain even greater power than the devatas.

    Aditi, the mother of the devatas, was distressed by the demon king’s rule. She turned to her husband, the great sage Kashyapa, for help. He advised her to observe payovrata—a vow of subsisting only on milk for a set period—to please Lord Vishnu. “Only Lord Vishnu can help us,” he said.

    Pleased with Aditi’s devotion, Lord Vishnu appeared before her and promised, “I will take birth as your son and protect the devatas.” Aditi was overjoyed. In time, Lord Vishnu incarnated as her son, Vamana, a dwarf brahman. All the devatas and sages came to greet the divine child.

Sage Brihaspati conducted Vamana’s upanayanam (sacred thread ceremony), while Yamaraja chanted the Gayatri Mantra. Indra gifted Vamana an umbrella; Brahma gave a Kamandalu (water pot). Chandra offered a shaft, and the seven sages presented Kusha grass.

Meanwhile, King Bali was performing the Ashvamedha Yajna to increase his dominion. Vamana, now a radiant young brahman, entered Bali’s palace. His brilliance astonished the king and the assembled sages.

King Bali welcomed Vamana with great respect and asked, “Lord, what can I do for you?”

Pleased with the king’s hospitality, Vamana praised his lineage and humbly requested, “Grant me just three steps of land, measured by my feet.”

Amused by such a modest request, Bali replied, “I am a king! You may ask for villages, gold, cows—anything you desire.” But Vamana smiled and insisted on only three steps of land.

Maharaj Bali agreed to the request, but his guru, Shukracharya, warned him, “This is no ordinary brahman. He is Lord Vishnu in disguise, come to destroy you and restore the devatas.”

Even after realising Vamana’s true identity, Bali stood firm in his promise. He chose to honour his word over his guru’s warning. He performed the ritual and granted Vamana the three steps of land.

At once, Lord Vamana began to grow—taller and taller—until his form encompassed the entire earth with his first step. The galaxies became his crown. As he grew further, they became his necklace, waistband, and anklets. With his second step, he covered all the worlds.

Then Vamana turned to Bali and asked, “Where is the land for my third step?”

In a gesture of absolute surrender, King Bali offered his head for the final step. Touched by Bali’s devotion and integrity, Lord Vamana blessed him and granted him rule over the lower realms, promising, “I will be your gatekeeper, so you may always have my darshan.”

The devatas showered flowers from the heavens and praised both Lord Vamana and King Bali for their selfless devotion.

King Mahabali is revered in early Hindu texts as a noble and generous ruler. His reign was marked by fairness, prosperity, and happiness for his people. It is believed that in the next Yuga, Mahabali will become the king of heaven.

In Kerala, Mahabali is remembered as the greatest ruler of all time. His legend forms the heart of the annual Onam festival. His story is also celebrated across Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh as Balipratipada, Balipadyami, or simply Bali.

    There is an intrinsic animality in man, a violence which he brings with his birth.     Even small babies will find some ants and will kill for no reason: killing is a joy. And the same… There are so many hunters who are hunting deer, lions and tigers, and they call it ‘game’. But it is strange: when a lion eats a hunter … then it is a ‘tragedy’. Strange! And the lion kills you with bare hands, and you kill the lion from far away, with guns, arrows, and all kinds of devices. You are a coward.     I used to stay in the palace of the maharaja of Bhavnagar, and his whole palace was full of lions’ heads, deer heads, and tigers’ heads on all the walls. And he used to be very proud to introduce people… telling who killed which animal – this one was killed by his father, this one was killed by his grandfather, this one was killed by himself, this was killed by his brother, by his son. In the same way, he also introduced those things to me the first time I stayed with him …     I said, “…. All that you have been doing is killing animals. What is the purpose? You have enough food; you don’t need to kill them.”     He said. “It is a game.”     I said, “But the game has some rules. Both parties should be provided with the same instruments. Both parties should be confronting each other in full light. You are hiding behind a tree, with a gun, and you kill an innocent deer, and you think you are playing a game? And what part does the deer to play in the game? Has he consented to play the game? And this is very unfair: why are you sitting on top of a tree?     “You are simply a coward, even with your gun. And this is not a game. This is simply your intrinsic violence, which is finding some way to destroy. And if you have any sense of humanity, remove all this nonsense from this palace! This shows your real face. These are not the heads of the animals; these are your heads.”     He could not understand …     Just as you are here, a guest, a tiger is also a guest. And it simply means that if you kill the tiger, you are insensate. I am not concerned with the tiger, because it is going to die one day. I am concerned with you, because killing each human or animal or anything that is living, goes on making your heart a stone. And if your heart becomes a stone, a rock, then your spiritual growth becomes impossible. A rock will not allow you to reach your own being. Anything that stops your evolution in consciousness is evil- it is a sin – and anything that helps you to move towards more consciousness is a virtue. That’s the only definition that I can give to you. Be more aesthetic, be more sensitive, be more respectful of life, because you are part of it. Whoever you are killing, you are killing yourself. INDIA AFLOAT LIKE THE SHIP OF THESEUS

    Resilient India, much like the Ship of Theseus, has undergone profound and continuous transformations over the centuries, yet its essence remains remarkably consistent. The Ship of Theseus’s paradox is a classic philosophical thought experiment that queries whether an object that has had all its parts replaced over time can still be considered the same object. The paradox raises fundamental questions about identity, continuity, and change—questions that can be deeply applied to the story of India.

    During its primordial history, India has been subjected to multiple invasions, foreign influences, colonial rule, and internal upheavals. From the early invasions of the Mughals to British colonisation, followed by independence and the ongoing evolution of its society, India has seen drastic political, social, and cultural changes. Yet, despite these transformations, India has retained its core identity, much like the Ship of Theseus, which, although constantly repaired and refurbished, still retains its function and spirit. The question, then, arises: Is India still the same India after all these changes? Or has it become something fundamentally different?

    The analogy of the “rotting planks” and the “invaders” is especially apt in this context. India’s history has been marked by waves of foreign influence and control. Yet, like the ship that stays afloat even as its parts and planks are gradually replaced, India has managed to preserve its relevance through the centuries. The country’s resilience and ability to absorb and adapt to these changes demonstrate its remarkable continuity.

    Hinduism, in particular, serves as an example of this enduring continuity. Despite the multiple invasions, foreign rule, and the introduction of different religions and philosophies, Hinduism has not only survived but has thrived. It has evolved, integrating new ideas and practices, yet its core spiritual principles have remained unchanged. Hinduism flourished during ancient times, including the Ram Rajya and Mahabharata, and even after the numerous foreign invasions, it continues to flourish even today. (Mahakumbh is a live example of that).

    The Ship of Theseus’s paradox becomes even more compelling when we apply it to India’s history. Just as the ship’s identity persists even as its parts are replaced, India’s identity remains intact, even though it has undergone substantial transformations. Over the centuries, India has experienced numerous political and cultural shifts—each of these changes can be seen as the replacement of one “plank” of the ship. British colonial rule introduced new administrative systems, ideologies, and governance structures, while independence and partition created dramatic changes in India’s political landscape.

    Yet, beneath these changes, the core of India remains the same. The specific manifestations of India’s identity may have shifted over time, but its fundamental essence remains intact. India’s ability to absorb external influences while maintaining its unique cultural identity is what allows it to continue to thrive, much like a ship that, despite repairs and refurbishments, retains its original course.

    The paradox of identity that the Ship of Theseus presents raises important philosophical questions: If every component of India has changed over the centuries, is it still the same India? Or is it a new entity altogether? From a metaphysical perspective, the answer may lie in the idea that identity is not static. Just as the ship retains its spirit even as its physical form changes, India retains its soul even as its political, social, and cultural structures evolve.

    India’s story, then, is one of dynamic continuity. It is a living, breathing entity that evolves while retaining the essence of its civilization. Each phase of India’s history—whether the ancient period, the medieval era, the colonial period, or post-independence India—adds a new layer to the country’s identity. These layers are not a sign of India losing its original self, but rather of a nation that is constantly redefined, reshaped, and yet always remains connected to its roots. Just like the Ship of Theseus, India’s identity is not determined by the individual parts but by the broader spirit that she carries through time.

MOTHER EARTH

        The human lifespan, though finite, is a precious gift that we spend on various pursuits—some meaningful, others fleeting. The longest human lifespan recorded is just over 120 years, or about 43,800 days. However, the global average life expectancy, according to a 2022 data, is around 72 years (26,280 days). As we traverse through life, we inevitably pass through different stages, each with its own set of milestones. But just as life brings moments of joy and accomplishment, it also serves as a reminder that time is always moving forward, unstoppable and indifferent. This brings to mind the famous song from the 1966 Raj Kapoor film Teesri Kasam – “Sajan Re Jhoot Mat Bolo, Khuda ke pas jaana hai, na hathi hai na ghoda hai wahan paidal hi jaana hai” (Don’t tell lies, for when you stand before God, there are no horses or elephants, only your own feet to carry you). Time waits for no one, and it eventually strips away the superficiality of life, leaving behind only what truly matters.

    In Hindu philosophy, this journey of life is divided into four Ashramas—stages that represent the different phases of human existence: Brahmacharya (Student Stage), Grihastha (Householder Stage), Vanaprastha (Hermit Stage), and Sannyasa (Wandering Ascetic Stage). Each stage has a unique essence, from learning and acquiring knowledge to fulfilling familial responsibilities and eventually renouncing worldly attachments. However, as we near the end of our lives, the burden of materialism fades, and the wisdom of introspection takes center stage.

    As we navigate through life, we are given the freedom by the Supreme God to perform our actions—our karmas. In this game of life, one might succeed in areas like politics, career, or accumulating wealth, but these achievements often come at the cost of neglecting spirituality. The Srimad Bhagwatam reminds us that even when we live in a community, our karma is personal and individual. This is why it’s crucial to continuously audit our actions and the time we spend on Mother Earth. We cannot afford to wait until the end of our lives to reflect on the sum total of our experiences. Now is the time to evaluate how we’ve affected others—how many smiles we’ve shared, and how many we’ve taken away.

    A poignant story captures this lesson: A notorious man meets a Sadhu, who informs him that he will die in a month. Upon hearing this, the man undergoes a dramatic transformation. He begins apologizing for his past wrongs, seeking forgiveness from those he hurt. On the 30th day, he approaches the Sadhu again, sharing how he has completely changed. The Sadhu reveals that he was never going to die, but he merely frightened him into reforming his ways. This story illustrates the deep impact time, or the awareness of its passage, can have on our actions and behavior.

    Karma is deeply intertwined with time. Our actions in the past shape the present, and our present actions will determine our future. Yet, the key to karma lies in intention. The intention behind our actions is what truly matters. When we act out of pure desire for the fruits of our labor, anxiety and misery follow, as we become fixated on outcomes. But when we perform our duties with the right intention, seeking neither reward nor recognition, we align ourselves with the true purpose of life.

    Ultimately, the message is clear: auditing our days on Earth isn’t just about assessing what we’ve achieved in the material world, but about evaluating the kindness we’ve extended and the harm we’ve caused. By striving for spiritual growth alongside our worldly pursuits, we can lead a more fulfilling and purposeful life. Time, after all, is the one thing we cannot control, so we must use it wisely.

        Basant Panchami is a lively and vibrant festival that marks the arrival of spring and the veneration of the Goddess Saraswati, the deity of knowledge, wisdom, music, and arts. The festival is celebrated across various regions of India and is known for its colourful customs, significance, and connection to both spiritual and seasonal transitions. Also, referred to as Saraswati Puja, Basant Panchami celebrates the Goddess’s association with learning and creativity and heralds the arrival of the spring season.

        Observed on the fifth day of the bright half of the lunar month Magha, typically in late January or early February, Basant Panchami is a festival that signifies the beginning of spring, although it falls 40 days before the official start of the season. This 40-day transition is rooted in traditional beliefs, which hold that the changing seasons take around 40 days to fully unfold. As such, the celebration serves as an early greeting to spring, often referred to as the “King of all Seasons,” with its vibrancy, new life, and energy.

        Yellow colour plays an important role during Basant Panchami. It is associated with the Goddess Saraswati, whose presence is symbolized by the colour as well as her attire. Yellow represents creativity, knowledge, and the ripening mustard fields, which are in bloom at this time of year. People wear yellow clothing to participate in the celebration, embracing the spirit of renewal and vibrancy that the colour represents.

        In northern India, where the weather is still cold, and in central and western regions, where the spring-like weather begins to take hold, the festival marks a gradual transition toward the full bloom of spring. This change in the atmosphere, along with the blossoming mustard flowers, signifies the shift from winter’s dormancy to the energetic growth of spring.

        In some parts of India, Basant Panchami is also associated with Kamadeva, the Hindu god of love, and his consort, Rati. According to legend, Kamadev awakened Lord Shiva from his deep meditation to help Parvati win his affection. Basant Panchami celebrates the awakening of the earth’s desires and the renewal of life.

        An important mythological story tied to Basant Panchami is the tale of Lord Shiva. When the sages sought to wake Shiva from his meditation, they enlisted Kamadev, the god of love, to stir Shiva’s desires. However, when Kamadev shot his flower arrows at Shiva, God’s third eye opened, unleashing a fireball that reduced Kamadeva to ashes in Umananda Islet in the centre of River Brahmaputra in Guwahati, Assam. Kamadev returned to life on the day of Vasant Panchami after Shiva married Parvati. That is why Kamadeva, the god of love and desire, is worshipped along with his wife Rati on this day.

        On Basant Panchami, it is a common practice for families to encourage children to write their first words with their fingers, symbolizing a new beginning in education. The day also brings people together to study or engage in musical activities, as these pursuits are considered auspicious on this day.

        Flying kites is another fun and popular tradition linked to the festival, especially in northern and western India, where the skies are filled with colourful kites on this auspicious day.

        Historically, the festival has also been important in Sikh culture. Maharaja Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Empire, promoted Basant Panchami as a day of social gatherings, particularly in Gurdwaras. The day also holds significance for Sikhs, as it is a time to remember the martyrdom of Haqiqat Rai, a young boy executed for refusing to convert to Islam in 1741. His sacrifice is honoured on this day, adding a layer of historical remembrance to the celebration.

        Basant Panchami is not limited to India alone. It is also celebrated in Nepal, Bali, Indonesia and other countries where you have a Hindu diaspora.
