AESOP'S FABLES 
Once there was a little frog. It had decided to become a famous doctor. It came out of the pond and went to live in the marshes. There, it sat on a rock and proclaimed to all the animals, "I am a learned physician. I am skilled in giving the right drugs and I can cure all your diseases. I am a doctor." All the animals were impressed and wanted to use the frog's services for their cure. After some time, a fix came forward and called out to the frog, "You! And a doctor! How come? How can you claim to have cures for others' diseases when you cannot even cure your own lame legs and blotched and wrinkled skin?" The frog did not have any answer and he was ashamed of his doing. All the animals started laughing. The frog quacked in embarrassment and returned to the pond. 
Moral of the story: Heal yourself first before healing others.

A BROKEN HAND

–My broken hand made me realise the importance of a hand. My life had come to a standstill without the grip of my pen–

Last monsoon on this day I was in London,

And this monsoon on that same day,

 I was at home with a broken hand,

There is someone who watches you always,

With nefarious or grand designs,

Both India and London were experiences of a different kind.

Don’t animate or disappoint yourself with psychedelic thoughts,

Hold yourself to a healthy balance,

Life is predictably unpredictable,

Some call it kismet and some accident.

*

Life’s unfolding is an unplanned mixture of,

Tears and smiles,

Choices, rejoices and achievements,

 Tragedies, failures and accomplishments.

*

Whether victory or defeat,

Take everything in your stride,

Where a broken hand doesn’t bring,

Your life’s journey to a compromise.

*

But a broken hand makes you realise,

The value of your grip,

That holds the August pen,

And the pen in return holds your fate.

*

A broken hand makes you realise,

The value of your fingers,

That tap the keyboards,

To make you rise high.

*

Life seems like taken for granted,

Till you encounter a calamity,

Calamities teach you,

What certainties don’t?

*

In this seesaw journey of life,

Each organ of your physique,

Is vital for your fight,

This, I realised,

When my hand was inoperational for some time.

THREE LOVE STORIES: A COMPARISON

     William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet and O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi and A Service of Love are three love stories that were written in different periods and contexts, but they share significant thematic elements. Despite the stark differences in style and setting, all three stories explore the concepts of love, sacrifice, fate, and irony. In Romeo and Juliet, the love between the two protagonists is intense, impulsive, and passionate. Shakespeare portrays their love as something that transcends the societal boundaries and family feuds that separate them. Their love is pure but becomes tainted by haste and miscommunication, leading to their untimely deaths.

    In contrast, O. Henry’s The Gift of the Magi and A Service of Love presents love in a more grounded manner. In A Service of Love, the love between the narrator and Delia is expressed through everyday acts of devotion and sacrifice. Delia’s love is not exhibited in grand gestures but through her ongoing, selfless actions that reflect her deep commitment to her husband. Similarly, in The Gift of the Magi, the love between Della and Jim is conveyed through selflessness. They each sacrifice their most prized possessions—Della’s hair and Jim’s watch—to buy meaningful gifts for one another. These stories show that love can be expressed through small, meaningful gestures. While the love in Romeo and Juliet is more dramatic and intense, the love in O. Henry’s stories is equally profound, though more subtle and enduring.

    Sacrifice is a key element that runs through all three stories, though the nature and consequences of these sacrifices differ greatly. In Romeo and Juliet, the sacrifices made by the characters are both tragic and irreversible. The lovers’ decision to end their lives in response to the misunderstanding of Juliet’s “death” demonstrates the extreme measures they are willing to take for love. Shakespeare suggests that while love can transcend boundaries, it can also lead to irreversible consequences.

    In contrast, the sacrifices in A Service of Love and The Gift of the Magi are significant but not life-threatening. In A Service of Love, Delia sacrifices her time and comfort to help her husband, performing physically demanding tasks to make his life easier. Her love is expressed through her efforts, which, though modest, speak volumes about her dedication. In The Gift of the Magi, Della and Jim make significant sacrifices—selling their most prized possessions—but their actions result in an ironic twist, as their sacrifices make their gifts useless. Though these sacrifices are not tragic like those in Romeo and Juliet, they still highlight the depth of devotion between the characters.

    The endings of the three stories underscore the different treatments of love and sacrifice. Romeo and Juliet end tragically, with both lovers dying as a result of a series of misunderstandings. Their deaths, though stemming from a genuine desire to be together, illustrate the destructive power of family feuds, social expectations, and fate. On the other hand, O. Henry’s stories end on a more bittersweet note. In A Service of Love, while the narrator reflects on the sacrifices made by Delia, there is no major calamity. Similarly, in The Gift of the Magi, the irony of Della and Jim’s sacrifices—where their gifts become useless—is poignant, but the story ends with a sense of warmth and affection.

    Romeo and Juliet explores the class-based conflict, with the Montagues and Capulets representing two wealthy, influential families. Their feud drives much of the plot. Whereas, O. Henry’s stories play out in more modest, working-class settings. In A Service of Love, the couple’s humble lifestyle and sacrifices reflect the struggles of everyday life. Similarly, in The Gift of the Magi, the focus on modest means emphasizes that love cannot be measured by material wealth. The story suggests that the most valuable gifts are often those that come from the heart.

    The role of fate in these stories varies significantly. In Romeo and Juliet, fate plays a central role. The lovers are described as “star-crossed,” suggesting that their tragic end is predetermined by forces beyond their control. Their love, though intense and pure, is ultimately doomed due to family loyalty, social pressures, and the unavoidable force of fate.

    In contrast, O. Henry’s characters in A Service of Love and The Gift of the Magi are not bound by fate in the same way. The outcomes of these stories are shaped more by the characters’ decisions and sacrifices. The irony that emerges in O. Henry’s works stems not from external forces but from the characters’ internal desires to express their love, leading to unexpected yet touching outcomes.

    Irony plays a significant role in all three stories. In Romeo and Juliet, dramatic irony intensifies the tragedy. The audience knows that Juliet is not dead, but Romeo, unaware of this, tragically takes his own life. This sense of irony heightens the impact of the play, underscoring the dangers of miscommunication and haste in matters of the heart.

    In O. Henry’s stories, the irony is more bittersweet. In The Gift of the Magi, Della and Jim sacrifice their most valuable possessions to buy each other meaningful gifts, only to discover that their sacrifices have rendered their gifts useless.

    While Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet explores love’s tragic consequences in a world of social conflict and fate, O. Henry’s stories—The Gift of the Magi and A Service of Love—present love as something that transcends material concerns through sacrifice and selflessness.

READER’S REWIND: FOND REMEMBRANCE

    Sabharwal and Swami were both way senior to me in the company in every manner. Our office was on the illustrious Parliament Street in New Delhi, right opposite the VIP police station and not too far from Connaught Circus—the lifeline of New Delhi.

    Sabharwal, a carefree Punjabi Khatri, lived in Kirti Nagar, while Swami, a sober Tamil Brahmin, called Karol Bagh his home. Karol Bagh then was the South Indian capital of Delhi. Sabharwal and Swami were a bubbling mix of Punjabi bhangra and Tamil classical music. Sabharwal was the liaison manager, living life on the edge, completely embodying the “YOLO” spirit. Swami, on the other hand, was the company’s admin manager and lived like he had just stepped out of a spiritual retreat—practically a walking textbook of South Indian customs. And yes, he had the chandan tilak on his forehead every day, which by the time he reached the office used to dry up and change colour as if displaying his mood swing.

    Despite their differences, they were the office’s cynosure. Sabharwal, with his hair flying in the wind, would race to work on his rickety Vespa, and Swami, like a well-trained disciple, would sit behind him. Until one, unforgettable day.

    It started like any other morning. Sabharwal, helmet strapped, so tight that it made him virtually deaf to the world, zipped through the chaotic traffic of Karol Bagh, expecting Swami to hop on the scooter behind him. Like a seasoned Vespa rider, he revved the engine and took off, full throttle, into the mayhem of Delhi traffic—completely convinced that Swami was behind him.

    After thirty minutes, Sabharwal rolled into the office parking lot, feeling like a hero in an action movie, only to realize something felt… off. The scooter felt unusually light. Too light. That’s when it struck him: Oh no, I’ve left Swami behind!! Like a man who just realized he’s lost his car keys in his own pocket. Sabharwal stood there, frozen, looking around in a panic, half-expecting Swami to appear out of thin air and shake his head at him like some kind of divine reprimand.

    After what felt like a thousand years of awkward silence (well, more like five minutes), Sabharwal trudged up to the office. Still in denial, still thinking “Maybe Swami’s taking a longer route. Maybe he’s meditating on the way.” But no, Swami wasn’t there.

    And then, out of nowhere—entered Swami, storming in like a man on a mission. He marched in, red-faced and fuming, his deportment like an ancient sage on a warpath. Without missing a beat, he trod right up to Sabharwal, fists clenched like he was about to drop the wisdom of the ages on him. And he did.

    “Arrey Baba, kya hua? I was all set to hop on, and then… vroom!! You moved the scooter when my leg was midair and I was left behind! I almost pulled a muscle, yaar!” he exploded as if this was the greatest betrayal.

    Sabharwal, still recovering from the shock of his mistake, sputtered, “Arrey Swami, I am so sorry, yaar! I was in deep thought about how to deal with that bloke in Udyog Bhawan. I thought you were on board! You were so quiet today, I figured you were stressed about work! It wasn’t until I reached Patel Chowk and realized my scooter was suspiciously light that I turned around—and boom, you weren’t there!”

    Swami appeared like he was about to lose his mind, but realized how ridiculous it was, and let out a sigh. And just then both of them burst into laughter. The kind of laugh where you can’t help but snort, giggle, and question your life choices.

    We all laughed so hard that we nearly toppled over from our chairs. Sabharwal was practically in tears with laughter, and Swami, despite his serious demeanour, couldn’t help but chuckle too. Life is full of misunderstandings, missteps, and plenty of laughter.

    REINCARNATION OF DALAI LAMA IN A FREE WORLD

        In his recent book “Voice of the Voiceless,” the Dalai Lama has reaffirmed his stand on the issue of his reincarnation and succession—a matter that has long been a source of tension between him and the Chinese government. His comments in the book have again brought the issue to the forefront, highlighting the ongoing clash between the Tibetan spiritual leader and the ruling Chinese Communist Party.

        The Dalai Lama explicitly states in the book that his reincarnation will not occur in China or Tibet under Chinese rule. He will be reborn in a free world, away from the Chinese Communist Party’s control. This is a significant statement because it directly challenges China’s desire to assert authority over the reincarnation process, a system the Chinese government has attempted to control for decades.

    His Holiness urges his followers to reject any successor chosen by the Chinese government. This is a crucial point in the ongoing dispute. China has made several moves to control the process of selecting the next Dalai Lama, and His Holiness has long resisted this interference. The Dalai Lama’s spiritual authority, he believes, should remain independent of political control, particularly that of a regime that has heavily repressed Tibetan culture and religion.

        In a statement about his reincarnation he also raises questions about the future of the Dalai Lama Institution. By stating that he will be reborn in a free world, he reaffirms his commitment to ensuring that the Dalai Lama tradition continues its traditional role of advocating for human rights and spiritual leadership. He suggests that his future reincarnation will help preserve the spiritual autonomy of the Tibetan people and continue their fight for freedom and justice in the face of ongoing repression.

        Dalai Lama’s remarks in the book underscore the growing conflict between Tibet’s spiritual leadership and the Chinese Communist Party. Beijing has consistently sought to assert control over the process of selecting religious leaders in Tibet, including the Dalai Lama’s successor. This is seen as a ploy to maintain political influence over Tibet and undermine the Tibetan struggle for autonomy.

        The Chinese government’s claim that it has the right to select the next Dalai Lama is viewed by the Dalai Lama and many Tibetans as an infringement on religious freedom and the cultural sovereignty of the Tibetan people. This has led to significant tensions between Tibetans in exile, particularly in India, and China, with the Dalai Lama being a powerful symbol of Tibetan resistance.

        Dalai Lama’s message in the book reflects his enduring belief in the power of the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ as a force for good in the world. He envisions his reincarnation as a voice for the oppressed, an advocate for human rights, and a protector of Tibetan culture and Buddhist teachings.

        The Chinese government views the Dalai Lama as a major obstacle to its control over Tibet, and is likely to be angered by such statements. For Beijing, the Dalai Lama is seen not only as a spiritual figure but as a political leader advocating for Tibetan autonomy, which it views as a threat to national unity.    The Dalai Lama’s comments continue to attract international attention, as they highlight the struggle for religious freedom in Tibet and China. His call for the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ to be maintained in a free world could galvanize international support for the Tibetan cause, particularly in the context of global movements advocating for human rights and religious freedom.

        The Dalai Lama’s vision for his reincarnation outside of China and Tibet may have long-term consequences for the Tibetan identity and the future of the Tibetan Buddhist tradition. Should the Dalai Lama’s reincarnation occur outside Tibet, it could symbolise a shift in the Tibetan struggle, where the Tibetan people’s religious and cultural heritage is maintained in exile and outside the influence of Chinese Communist rule.

        “Voice of the Voiceless,” is not only a spiritual work but also a political statement that addresses the future of the ‘Dalai Lama Institution’ in the face of Chinese interference. By affirming that his reincarnation will be outside China and Tibet, he reaffirms his commitment to the Tibetan people’s freedom and spiritual independence. His followers are encouraged to reject any Chinese-appointed successor, and the focus on his reincarnation will undoubtedly continue to be a point of tension between Tibetan Buddhism and the Chinese government.     The book has further illuminated the Dalai Lama’s intentions to ensure that his legacy and the cause of Tibet continue in a free world.

      NO EFFORT GOES IN VAIN

          Primordial times are privy to the fact that nothing is achieved in life without effort. The effort could be either positive or negative. The choice is yours as God doesn’t control your Karma. A negative effort could lead to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki, destroying it completely, whereas a positive effort could be the construction of the Suez Canal, which shortened the maritime distance considerably, between Asia and Europe, thereby accelerating the cargo and passenger movement by sea. And every inch of effort bears a proportionate result, as per the law of nature.

           Hu Shih, a former Chinese diplomat to America who was also an essayist, fiction writer, literary scholar, philosopher and politician once said, ‘Life on its own does not mean anything – it takes on any meaning that you decide to give it. Instead of spending all day contemplating the meaning of life, we may as well attempt to do something that gives it one.

          Be bold when making a case and cautious in seeking evidence; be earnest in all matters and solemn in your conduct. We must be firm in believing that today’s failure is yesterday’s lack of hard work and effort and that today’s effort and hard work will surely lead to tomorrow’s great success.

          The moments when you are sad and disappointed are the times when you need courage and faith the most. You need to firmly believe that no effort and hard work ever goes wasted in this world. I may not be the one to succeed – yet no effort will go in vain.

          Every part of yesterday makes up for what I am today; do not think too far ahead and grieve. From now on, I shall reap as I sow.’

          The sane advice from the Buddhist Dharmapada is, ‘The effort is like a treasure. Those who make positive efforts are mindful, pure in conduct, self-disciplined, and live in accordance with the Dharma, have ever-increasing glory. Through effort, heedfulness, and self-discipline, the wise make a continent for themselves that cannot be submerged by flood. The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, while the wise guard his heedlessness as if protecting a gem.’

           ‘There is a story of effort behind every success’ says the Chinese venerable master Hsing Yun. He says ‘The name of the effort may vary. Just as, to succeed, one needs hardships; to be celebrated one needs pressure; to gain honour one needs to labour; to achieve one needs to sacrifice and be dedicated. An ancient tree survives wind and frost. A skyscraper is raised with money and sweat. An old business has its ups and downs. An old man is tested by misfortune. Those who don’t look back have no past. Those who don’t look forward have no future. Those who don’t seize the moment have no present. Those who don’t master themselves will not change the society.’

          Hsing Yun further says ‘Repeated action becomes a habit, the habit becomes a character, the character becomes fate and fate rules your life and when you work hard, don’t worry about success or failure. When you have done your best don’t worry if you’ve failed, for no effort goes in vain.’

              Here I’m also reminded of the Greek tragedian Sophocles who said, ‘Success is dependent on effort’, and have you ever seen an idle man succeed?

            Resilient India, much like the Ship of Theseus, has undergone profound and continuous transformations over the centuries, yet its essence remains remarkably consistent. The Ship of Theseus’s paradox is a classic philosophical thought experiment that queries whether an object that has had all its parts replaced over time can still be considered the same object. The paradox raises fundamental questions about identity, continuity, and change—questions that can be deeply applied to the story of India.

            During its primordial history, India has been subjected to multiple invasions, foreign influences, colonial rule, and internal upheavals. From the early invasions of the Mughals to British colonisation, followed by independence and the ongoing evolution of its society, India has seen drastic political, social, and cultural changes. Yet, despite these transformations, India has retained its core identity, much like the Ship of Theseus, which, although constantly repaired and refurbished, still retains its function and spirit. The question, then, arises: Is India still the same India after all these changes? Or has it become something fundamentally different?

            The analogy of the “rotting planks” and the “invaders” is especially apt in this context. India’s history has been marked by waves of foreign influence and control. Yet, like the ship that stays afloat even as its parts and planks are gradually replaced, India has managed to preserve its relevance through the centuries. The country’s resilience and ability to absorb and adapt to these changes demonstrate its remarkable continuity.

            Hinduism, in particular, serves as an example of this enduring continuity. Despite the multiple invasions, foreign rule, and the introduction of different religions and philosophies, Hinduism has not only survived but has thrived. It has evolved, integrating new ideas and practices, yet its core spiritual principles have remained unchanged. Hinduism flourished during ancient times, including the Ram Rajya and Mahabharata, and even after the numerous foreign invasions, it continues to flourish even today. (Mahakumbh is a live example of that).

            The Ship of Theseus’s paradox becomes even more compelling when we apply it to India’s history. Just as the ship’s identity persists even as its parts are replaced, India’s identity remains intact, even though it has undergone substantial transformations. Over the centuries, India has experienced numerous political and cultural shifts—each of these changes can be seen as the replacement of one “plank” of the ship. British colonial rule introduced new administrative systems, ideologies, and governance structures, while independence and partition created dramatic changes in India’s political landscape.

            Yet, beneath these changes, the core of India remains the same. The specific manifestations of India’s identity may have shifted over time, but its fundamental essence remains intact. India’s ability to absorb external influences while maintaining its unique cultural identity is what allows it to continue to thrive, much like a ship that, despite repairs and refurbishments, retains its original course.

            The paradox of identity that the Ship of Theseus presents raises important philosophical questions: If every component of India has changed over the centuries, is it still the same India? Or is it a new entity altogether? From a metaphysical perspective, the answer may lie in the idea that identity is not static. Just as the ship retains its spirit even as its physical form changes, India retains its soul even as its political, social, and cultural structures evolve.

            India’s story, then, is one of dynamic continuity. It is a living, breathing entity that evolves while retaining the essence of its civilization. Each phase of India’s history—whether the ancient period, the medieval era, the colonial period, or post-independence India—adds a new layer to the country’s identity. These layers are not a sign of India losing its original self, but rather of a nation that is constantly redefined, reshaped, and yet always remains connected to its roots. Just like the Ship of Theseus, India’s identity is not determined by the individual parts but by the broader spirit that she carries through time.

        MAHA SHIVRATRI: A NIGHT OF DIVINE ILLUMINATION

            Maha Shivratri, meaning the Great Night of Shiva, is one of the most significant festivals in Hinduism. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Supreme Soul, and celebrated annually on the 14th day of the waning moon in the Phalguna month (between February and March). The festival focuses on Lord Shiva. He is revered for his wisdom, power and ability to eliminate ignorance, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.

            At the core of Maha Shivratri’s celebration is the aradhana of Lord Shiva. In Hindu teachings, ignorance is considered the root cause of suffering. Suffering manifests when individuals become attached to worldly desires, attachments, and validations. The festival also highlights Shiva’s ability to conquer lust, not just in the sexual sense, but as a metaphor for all worldly attachments and cravings. In the Bhagavad Gita, these desires are described as an insatiable fire that leads to suffering. By overcoming these desires, individuals can achieve self-realization and deepen their spiritual connection.

            A key mythological story associated with Maha Shivratri is the tale of Lord Shiva’s destruction of Kamadev, the god of love and desire. Kamadev tried to disturb Shiva’s meditation by shooting love arrows, but Shiva, in his anger, opened his third eye and burned Kamadev to ashes. This act symbolizes the destruction of desire and attachment. Shiva’s third eye represents a higher spiritual vision that allows him to see beyond the material world, revealing deeper truths and wisdom. For devotees, this myth signifies the goal of Maha Shivratri: to awaken their inner light and gain higher knowledge.

            On Maha Shivratri, devotees engage in spiritual practices such as fasting, chanting mantras, and staying awake throughout the night. These rituals help individuals transcend material distractions and focus on the divine. Fasting and remaining awake symbolize vigilance and spiritual discipline while chanting the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” and reciting hymns like the Shiva Chalisa to purify the mind and body. These practices are meant to deepen the connection with Lord Shiva and guide devotees towards spiritual enlightenment.

            Maha Shivratri also commemorates the divine marriage of Lord Shiva and Parvati, symbolizing the union of masculine and feminine energies, which maintain the balance of the universe. Additionally, it honours Shiva’s cosmic dance, the Tandava, representing the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and destruction. The dance also signifies the natural rhythm of the universe and reminds devotees of the importance of aligning with the flow of life. Shiva’s Trishul (Trident) represents various trinities: creation, preservation, and destruction; past, present, and future; body, mind and atman.

            The festival also emphasizes the renewal of righteousness. According to the Bhagavad Gita, when righteousness declines, the Supreme Being manifests to restore balance. Lord Shiva’s role as the destroyer of evil and protector of the righteous is central to this. Observing Maha Shivratri encourages individuals to purify themselves, embrace virtues like honesty, charity, and forgiveness, and reaffirm their commitment to righteousness.

            The worship of Lord Shiva is often performed through the Shiva Lingam, a representation of Shiva’s formless nature. Temples like those in Somnath, Vishwanath, Mahakaleshwar, and Rameshwar are important pilgrimage sites, attracting millions of devotees. Maha Shivratri is celebrated differently across India and the world.

            Maha Shivratri is a night of inner transformation. By fasting, devotion, and meditation, devotees purify their minds, bodies, and souls, creating space for divine light. This sacred night serves as an annual reminder that Lord Shiva’s wisdom illuminates the path to spiritual awakening, guiding individuals from ignorance to divine knowledge.

          A CALCUTTA STORY: BLAME THYSELVES, BHADRALOKS

              The city was a hub of intellectual excellence as long as it hosted a thriving business ecosystem. That’s a truth few Calcuttans are willing to admit.

              Calcutta or Kolkata is in the news- yet again for all the wrong reasons, and reinforcing the long-standing narrative of a city in decline. Make no mistake, Bengalis continue to shine in their respective fields. Only a few weeks ago, India woke up to the news of Anusuya Sengupta winning a top acting award at the Cannes Film Festival. Bengali excellence in education, culture and art is something that the community takes immense pride in.

              However, this sense of tautological superiority sits uncomfortably with the changing geographical praxis of artists. While Satyajit Ray and Mrinal Sen were based in Calcutta, filmmaker Shaunak Sen and Anusuya are based out of Delhi and Mumbai, respectively. The bulk of Bengal’s (largely Calcutta’s) brightest- across science, finance, and art- are today based outside the state. This, coincides with the decline of Calcutta, from India’s top city at the dawn of Independence to a bit of an also-ran today.

              It’s forgotten, often by Calcuttans themselves, that Calcutta’s storied intellectual excellence was funded by economic surplus generated by its thriving business ecosystem, right from the Mughal era. The house of Jagat Seth (the title meaning “owner of the world”) was India’s Medici. Modern banking was initiated in India by establishing the Bank of Calcutta (State Bank of India, in its current avatar). Industries prospered – up the Hooghly river towards the northern periphery of Calcutta, one passes by old towns of Srirampur, Chandannagar and Bandel, with Carcasses of old factories that used to make textiles, light machinery and industrial intermediates.

              The primacy of Calcutta continued well after the British Raj (the capital shifted to New Delhi as far back as 1911). In 1947, despite the scars of partition, Calcutta remained India’s numero-uno city. It was the seat of India’s largest business families (including the House of Birla), the fulcrum of urbane sensibilities (from clubs to nightlife), India’s busiest airport, railway junction and above all, a storied, busy port. In the early 1970s, Calcutta wasn’t just India’s cultural-economic hub. From the east of Bombay right up to Manila, it was Asia’s place to be in. Lee Kuan Yew famously wanted Singapore to be like Calcutta – the story may be somewhat apocryphal, but succinctly captures Calcutta’s status well after Independence.

              Despite so much going for it, the city has lost it all and is in terminal decline. As per the latest Census done, in 2011, Kolkata (the name had changed by then, somewhat illustratively perhaps) was the only major city in India to record a decline in its population. While it remains wealthy- it still ranks amongst the richest in India- opportunities have dried up and the city’s young typically take one-way tickets out after completing school. Calcutta today resembles a giant retirement home, a perceptive natural experiment in the horrendous results of brain drain.

              The decline is on par with that of great European cities like Venice and Florence – once powerful centres of trade and commerce, but today little more than tourist attractions. However, the decline of Venice and Florence didn’t constrain the emergence of Italy as a prosperous nation. The decline of Calcutta meant a decline of Bengal, as well as stagnation of India to the east of Kanpur.

              Reasons are multiple and complex, and Bengalis react emotionally both in critique and in defence of the matter. Political hostility between Calcutta and New Delhi is often cited. The freight equalization policy adopted soon after independence, which took away Bengal’s natural advantages of raw materials supplies for industry, is another popular rationale. Both have merits. But analysed dispassionately, neither explains the decline fully.

              After all, Bengal was a very large recipient of Independent India’s public-sector-driven investments in large industries. New Delhi funded the setting up of entire industrial townships in Durgapur and Kalyani, covering giant steel, heavy machinery, power and chemical factories. Calcutta was also a prime home to the Nehruvian imagination of higher education – India’s first IIM, first IIT and ISI were but three of many storied institutions established. here.

              At its core though, paraphrasing Mark Antony, the fault lies not in our stars, but within. Calcuttans are today akin to Ashkenazi Jews pre-WW2, an insanely talented bunch spread all over the world. Unlike pre-WW2 Ashkenazis though, Calcuttans don’t lack a ‘promised land’. But the land has decayed so much that it isn’t promising enough even for those who are still residents of the city.

              There are no outsiders to blame, lamenting political hostility is way past its sell-by date. Calcuttans have no one but themselves to blame. Acknowledging the same will be the first step towards a journey of regeneration.

The title is also archived in The Ohio Digital Library, USA. It was recently included in the digital library of the world-renowned company APPLE.
