POEM: I WANT MORE

“A man is never satisfied with what he has. He always wants more. But what is the limit of that more?”

I have enough,

Yet, I want more,

Since enough doesn’t prescribe a limit,

I wish to have more.

*

Enough and more are not two of a kind,

Yet they work in tandem,

They are mutually exclusive,

Where more aspire’s to fulfil your greedy aspirations.

*

Enough doesn’t remain adequate,

More doesn’t become surplus,

Because greed expands,

And together they consume mankind.

*

The baskets and trolleys in the malls,

The stock-keeping units and the brands,

The war cry of enough and more,

The floors and the expanse of the malls,

The queues and the billing counters,

They all expand with the burgeoning footfalls.

*

One enters the supermarket as if a pauper,

And comes out like a king,

After consuming a range of food dishes,

And buying a range of things.

*

Between enough and more,

There is a bridge of uncertainty,

That convinces the human mind,

To keep stocking till eternity.

*

There is no limit to wanting more,

But the idea of life is to enjoy…

…the grace of satisfaction,

Which comes when you feel you have enough,

And you don’t want more.

The gap between enough and more,

Is a thin line called satisfaction?

So, let satisfaction be the motto of your life,

And do away with the idea of I want more.

“There is no limit to your wanting more. Come out of that mindset to enjoy a life filled with satisfaction”

POEM: WHY DO THINGS HAPPEN?

Why do things happen?
And why do things don’t happen?
Is life a silent script already written,
Or a page that turns only when we touch it?

*
Do events unfold,
Because they are destined to unfold,
Woven into the fabric of our days,
Long before we learn to read the script?

*
Or things don’t happen,
Because destiny seals some doors,
Before we ever reach them?

To maintain the status quo.

*

Is it really the absence of effort,
That stops things from becoming real?
Or is it the quiet and powerful destiny,
That lifts some moments into being,
While letting others slip away?

*
A strange dialogue exists,
Between the strive and the fate?
It reveals where human effort ends,
And destiny begins?

*
And what becomes of our dreams,
For which no effort was ever made,
Are they the failures of will,
Or simply paths never meant to be paraded?

*

When I was young,
The road ahead shimmered,
With hope and promises,

Waiting to be claimed.

*
There was so much to do,

Lovely dreams to pursue,
There were so many possibilities,
That made me feel success had pulled through.

*
But now that age has slowed my steps,
I look back and see,
Layers upon layers of karma,
Some complete, some abandoned,
Some forgotten.

*

Life is a crisscross of possibilities,

A web of chances,

That touch, bend, diverge, return and fade,

Before they make the way.

*

It is a crossword puzzle,

Where each choice becomes a clue,

Each action becomes an answer,

That fills our lives with advantages.

*

There is a divine meaning,

In why things happen,

And why things don’t happen,

Which is beyond human comprehension.

*

We all come from the mist,

And vanish into the mist,

And that is the rule of life,

So take life as it comes.

*

“Take life as it comes. Take success and failure in equal measure.”

Poem: When the Summer Is Through

Kamlesh Tripathi

“There comes a time when the peak of life gets over, and you’re left with the residues. Learn to enjoy them equally.”

*

Celebrations were galore,

Merriments were in scores,

But after the peak,

Life has become a big bore.

*

When the summer ends,
And autumn arrives with its mellow gold,
I feel the whisper of endings,

In my deep core.

*
Winter waits quietly in the offing,
Not menacing, but inevitable,
When I realise, with a sigh,
That the peak of life is now left behind.

*

There was a time when every morning,
Seemed to hold a promise,
There was that thrill of becoming,
That reason for running.

*

The world seemed vast and welcoming,
Celebrations were endless,
Merriments were in scores.
And the future appeared allured.

*
Like a horizon forever receding,
But never out of reach,

And it was all before the peak,

When I was in the driver’s seat.

*

No one thinks of a decline,
When the climb is steep and bright,
We live as though the flame would never dim,
And life would continue to peak in the stride.

*
We believe that the inertia of joy,
Will keep turning the wheel of life,
Even long after the fire has extinguished,

So there is no risk to my pride.

*

But the seasons change quietly,
The heart slows its pace,
The crowd thins,
And suddenly, the silence is louder
than the sound.

*

Life after the peak is not bitter— only subdued,
Like the twilight after a blazing day,
The laughter now is softer,
the steps slower,
And the dreams are more inward.

*

There is beauty even here,
Even when there is no tide in the affairs of men,

Learn to accept the come down,

That emerges after the peak.

*

Somewhere deep within,
I still long for one more summer,
One more bandwagon,
One more extravaganza,
But that is not to be.

*

Diwali—The Festival of Lights

**

–Kamlesh Tripathi—

**

Diwali is a Festival of Lights,
A victory of day over the night,
Of good over the evil’s might,
Of truth, of hope, and what is right.

*

Diwali fetches five days of vibrant cheer,
With sweets, lamps and love sincere.
With rangoli, hues and lanterns bright,
And fireworks swirling throughout the night sky.

*

It highlights an all-time victory,
Where knowledge breaks through every blind,
Of ignorance and veils of gloom,
And radiant joy begins to bloom.

*

As per the holy Panchang,
Diwali recalls tales of yore.
When the month of Ashwin wanes and Kartik begins,
And Amavasya plays a significant innings.

*

It’s the darkest night,
With a lunar grace and swastik signs,

When the world looks prime,

At an opportune time.

*

It coincides with the harvest’s golden end,
Before the frost and chill descend.
Communities emerge in joy,
As golden diyas paint the skies.

*

As autumn breathes its cooler air,
October–November marks the affair.
The heart of fall, the soul of light,
Diwali shines in full delight.

*

Myths unravel, tales unfold,
Of Gods and demons, celestial and corporeal.
From Dhanteras to the climax day,
Lakshmi and Ganesh light the way.

*

Ayodhya celebrates and lights up,
On Rama’s arrival amidst the crowd.
With Sita, Laxman by his side,
And Hanuman’s attendance, sanctified.

*

With Shiva, Vishnu, and Krishna’s grace,
Durga’s might and Kali’s face,
And eventually, Narakasura’s fatal end,
As deities and demons come face-to-face.

*

From Ravana’s end to Rama’s victory,
From Dhanvantri’s healing touch,
The churning ocean’s mystic art,
Each finds a mention in Diwali’s heart.

*

Sparks erupt in the skies,
With sparklers, phuljhadis that rise high.
The demons flee, the gods descend,
And in that event, the miseries end.

*

In life’s struggle, in daily strife,
Diwali comes as a breath of life.
As does an oasis in a wide desert,
As a gentle pause, where peace can bide.

*

On Amavasya’s cold, dark night,
Beyond the stars and in the cosmos,
The lights of Diwali softly bloom,
Spreading hope, dissolving gloom.

*

The cosmos sports its finest robe,
Adorned in lights and loveliness.
And every heart, with joy infinite,
Sings together: Happy Diwali Night!

You thought your hometown was your favourite town,
But the hometown had something else to convey,
Upon your return after decades.

*

Though the name of the town had remained the same,
Everything else in it had changed.

*

The spires and minarets were dwarfed by skyscrapers,
Schools had become colleges,
Shops had become malls,
Parks had become dump yards.

*

Barren fields had turned into housing societies,
Playing fields had turned into gated communities.
All around, the view was different,
Where the docile town had turned into a bustling city.

*

Early friends had become senior citizens,
Roads had become flyovers,
The skyline now had a metro,
Locations had a new look.

*

Eateries had new banners,
Markets had a new behaviour.

Childlike had metamorphosed into adultlike,
It was when I returned to the city after decades.

*

From a pleasant child’s face,
I had now become an unknown and grown-up face.
So, everywhere in the hometown,
I was required to introduce myself.

*

It was the same town you had left with hope,
That someday you would return as a familiar face.
But that was not to be,
For the hometown had its own fortune to make.

*

Though your name was in the air,
You had now become an unknown face.
Though you remembered the names of your friends,
Their faces, too, had changed.

*

It was now your karma-bhoomi versus your hometown,
One had given you identity,
The other had given you a career opportunity.
One had given you fond and affectionate memories,
The other had given you a professional name.

*

So was it a letdown?
To return to your hometown?
Yes, in some ways.
So don’t have blind faith,
Whether it is your hometown or your workplace,
For both have their own legacies to make.

**

“The biggest permanence of life is change.
Don’t expect your hometown to be the same as it was when you left it decades ago.
So return if you have to, but with a pinch of salt.”
