THE THREE LIVES

“In our lifetime we are privy to three lives: the past, the Present and the future life. But what is at hand is the present life. If you want to live your life King-Size start appreciating and building on your Present-Life.

To know about your past life,

Look at the experiences of your present life,

To have a feel of your future life,

Feel the experiences of your present life.

*

Though past and future exist in separation,

They have an unbreakable relation,

Which the naked eye can’t see,

But the trail of karma can feel.

*

Your present is a reflection of your past,

Your present is a forerunner of your future,

Your present ensures your fortune,

And the noble deeds enacted in the present,

Helps you in building your impression.

*

It is believed,

A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush,

Your present is like the bird in your hand,

And your past and future are like the two in the bush.

Pamper the bird in hand,

That’ll take care of the birds in the bush,

By leading a clean life,

By leading a simple life,

By enjoying your present life.

By pondering over the past, the past won’t change,

By worrying about the future, the future won’t relent,

But by toiling in your present life things will progress.

The Past, Present and Future are like the three seasons,

But in real life, the Past and Future are like illusions,

Where the Past is discussed and the Future is dreamt,

And it is only the Present that gets immediate attention.

Your present life is your divine kingdom,

That carves your life’s mission,

Past and Future are only by-products of the Present life,

So focus well on your kingdom.

    I had a wonderful time yesterday in the Maharashtra Mitra Mandal library, Bandra, Mumbai, watching this brilliant documentary titled ‘SHADOW CIRCUS: THE CIA IN TIBET’ by Ritu Sarin and Tenzing Sonam. I also got a chance to speak about my book ‘AWADH ASSAM AND DALAI LAMA … THE KALACHAKRA’ and about my father, the late Kamakhya Prasad Tripathi, who had received His Holiness the Dalai Lama in 1959 when he entered India as a government of India representative to a very enlightened audience. A day well spent.

    No Effort Goes In Vain

        Primordial times are privy to the fact that nothing is achieved in life without effort. The effort could be either positive or negative. The choice is yours as God doesn’t control your Karma. A negative effort could lead to the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki eradicating it completely. In contrast, a positive effort could be the construction of the Suez Canal which shortened the maritime distance considerably, between Asia and Europe, thereby accelerating the cargo and passenger movement by sea. And every inch of effort bears a proportionate result, as per the law of nature.

         Hu Shih, a former Chinese diplomat to America who was also an essayist, fiction writer, literary scholar, philosopher and politician once said, ‘Life on its own does not mean anything – it takes on any meaning that you decide to give it. Instead of spending all day contemplating the meaning of life, we may as well attempt to do something that gives it one.

        Be bold when making a case and cautious in seeking evidence; be earnest in all matters and solemn in your conduct. We must be firm in believing that today’s failure is yesterday’s lack of hard work and effort and that today’s effort and hard work will surely lead to tomorrow’s great success.

        The moments when you are sad and disappointed are the times when you need courage and faith the most. You need to firmly believe that no effort and hard work ever goes wasted in this world. I may not be the one to succeed – yet no effort will go in vain.

        Every part of yesterday makes up for what I am today; do not think too far ahead and grieve. From now on, I shall reap as I sow.’

        The sane advice from the Buddhist Dharmapada is, ‘The effort is like a treasure. Those who make positive efforts are mindful, pure in conduct, self-disciplined, and live in accordance with the Dharma, have ever-increasing glory. Through effort, heedfulness, and self-discipline, the wise make a continent for themselves that cannot be submerged by flood. The foolish and ignorant indulge in heedlessness, while the wise guard his heedlessness as if protecting a gem’.

         ‘There is a story of effort behind every success’ says the Chinese venerable master Hsing Yun. He says ‘The name of the effort may vary. Just as, to succeed, one needs hardships; to be celebrated one needs pressure; to gain honour one needs to labour; to achieve one needs to sacrifice and be dedicated. An ancient tree survives wind and frost. A skyscraper is raised with money and sweat. An old business has its ups and downs. An old man is tested by misfortune. Those who don’t look back have no past. Those who don’t look forward have no future. Those who don’t seize the moment have no present. Those who don’t master themselves will not change the society.’

        Hsing Yun further says ‘Repeated action becomes a habit, the habit becomes a character, the character becomes fate and fate rules your life and when you work hard, don’t worry about success or failure. When you have done your best don’t worry if you’ve failed, for no effort goes in vain.

            Here I’m also reminded of the Greek tragedian Sophocles who said, ‘Success is dependent on effort’, and have you ever seen an idle man succeed?

      Rudyard Kipling

      Rabindranath Tagore and Rudyard Kipling never met each other but their admirers often hailed them together in the newsstand. Both are contemporary Indians. Tagore (1861-1941) and Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936). Tagore is considered the father of modern Indian literature. Like Tagore, Kipling too is an Indian, but of Caucasian stock, whose life ran parallel with that of Tagore. While Kipling was among the Anglo-Indian population who administered the British Empire in India, Tagore was a native Indian who resented the colonial presence. He wasn’t overtly political in his activities, but he wasn’t afraid to expose his feelings, either.

          Kipling of ‘The Jungle Book’ fame wrote many short stories and poems focusing on the Indian subcontinent which inevitably have a similar feel to Tagore. It would be fair to say that both writers shared a similar gift for their tireless work and both were awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature; Kipling in 1907 and Tagore in 1913. Tagore was a polymath and an all-round creative talent. He became a celebrity in the West during the second half of his lifetime. In 1878 Tagore moved to England intending to obtain a degree but he was ill-suited to formal education and returned to India in 1880, having failed in his academic ambitions.

             Kipling was sometimes seen as a racist and had a particular dislike for Bengalis, of which Tagore was one. As a result, there was no love lost between the two literary giants. Tagore had interactions with other European writers, but he ignored Kipling as if he were a pariah. Kipling would not acknowledge Tagore’s work as having any literary worth, because his prejudice was so strong. He insinuated that Tagore was a pretentious pseudo-intellectual, incapable of writing anything of value. Kipling’s view was typically imperialist due to his upbringing. He had been conditioned to believe that “good” Indians were those who knew their place as servants to the ruling elite. His racism towards Tagore was intensified by his resentment that a native Indian had achieved the same literary stature as himself. Kipling needed to feel superior to mask his insecurities, so Tagore’s success presented a psychological impasse.

           Both writers offered an overlap in literary approach and content, as if they were mirrors reflecting the same influences, but with a slightly different perspective. In many ways, Tagore appeared wiser than Kipling, for he was drawn to writing his poetry from an early age and was far more open-minded and accommodating of contrasting cultural influences. Kipling deployed writing as a form of escapism, to hide and express his emotions, having suffered a rather unfortunate childhood as described in his short story ‘Baa Baa, Black Sheep’. Tagore intellectualised the human condition and essentially put himself within the characters so that they were imbued with empathy and sympathy. This was because of his vast ancestral estates where he would travel to collect rents and interact with the tenants. This exposed him to traditional storytelling and songs, as well as philosophical and religious ideas. Tagore wrote while travelling, for example, while he was in Ghazipur—U.P., he wrote most of the poems published in his book Manasi. Kipling could not do this so his characters are more stereotyped and lack the complexity and diverseness observed in real people.

          Tagore the ‘Bard of Bengal’, and Kipling the ‘Bard of the Empire’, were contemporary literature giants. They were poles apart in thoughts and ideals, viewing society and the Empire from opposite ends of the spectrum. Kipling was strongly nationalistic, while Tagore was a humanist and against the idea of nationalism and the British Empire, though, ironically, Tagore’s poems are today national anthems of two nations, India and Bangladesh. While Kipling was from an educated middle-class family, they were not moneyed, and gaining financial security was important for them. Kipling’s father Lockwood’s decision to come to India as a teacher in the JJ School of Arts was driven by financial need. Tagore on the other hand was born wealthy, in a family of enormous influence and privilege in Calcutta. Despite his privileged background, he had a strong empathy for fellow human beings, which is largely why he was able to write stories and poems with humility and connection.

          Tagore’s stories are typically a hybrid between fairy-tale ghost effects and fables. They convey the traditional Indian belief system. Many are short in length and are over-descriptive so it won’t be possible to condense them further and some do not have a conclusive ending.

          In the year 1913, Tagore became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize in Literature as a result he remains one of the most important voices of Bengali culture. On the other hand, Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, and at 41, its youngest recipient to date. He was also sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and several times for a knighthood, but he declined both. It is not possible to list the extensive work of these two writers in this short piece, but it appears writers of the following generation drew inspiration from them. For example, one can sense a fleeting similarity between Satyajit Ray’s short story ‘Anath Babu’s Terror’ and Tagore’s ‘The Hungry Stones’; and Kipling’s poem ‘Mandalay’, can, as if, mesh with the pages of George Orwell’s book ‘Burmese Days’. Not surprising, to see the connection in literature.

        SHORT STORY: THE FALL OF COW’S KINGDOM

            Once while flying through the snowy mountains, a skein of swans from the Cold West flying towards the East landed in an ancient kingdom close to a river. They were sunning there enjoying a nice meal of fish and worms. This was their second landing in the kingdom. It was an ancient and picturesque country known as the Cow’s Kingdom. Its map resembled a cow’s face and the major population was of cows. The three sides of the kingdom had rivers and one side was landlocked. On the north, there were tall snowy mountains with rivers on the east, south and west. During the monsoon, the rainwater from the mountains used to flow down to the plains through the many rivers it had and this made the kingdom’s land very fertile for multi-cropping and therefore an envy of the neighbours.

            The swans were surprised that there were no cows around in the Kingdom this time. But when they came last time the country was full of them. While they were pondering about the absence of cows their leader Udaan saw an old owl sitting on the tree. He asked, ‘Where are all the cows and what is your name?’

               ‘My name is Samay.’ said the owl. And he spontaneously asked,

            ‘What is your name?’

             ‘Well, my name is Udaan.’ Said the Swan.

            ‘Udaan, be careful.’

            ‘But why what happened?’ He asked.

             Samay cautioned,  

            ‘Beware it is no more a Cow’s Kingdom. It has now turned into a Wolf’s Den.’

            ‘Oh no! But how did that happen?’ Asked Udaan, somewhat surprised, and added, ‘The last time when we landed here, an old vulture told us that the cows were doing quite well in the kingdom.’

            ‘But that was long ago.’ Replied Samay.

            ‘But where are all the cows now?’ Asked Udaan.

            Samay started gingerly, ‘Some cows have been detained as livestock. The majority have left or have been devoured by the wolves. The erstwhile ruler King Bharat was doing quite well during his reign. He looked after the citizens (mostly cows) of the kingdom quite passionately. Based on their abilities, he used to assign them jobs. The assignments were based purely on merit and not on any lineage or ancestry.’

            ‘But then what went wrong?’ Asked another swan in the skein. Samay decided to open up,

            ‘The cows couldn’t remain united but the wolves united because of the delicious beef and that brought about the disaster. The kingdom had become a symbol of happiness, because of its prosperity. The tough male calves were trained to protect the borders of the kingdom. The lactating cows were tasked with the training of young calves to lead healthy lives and provide medical care to the community. Cows who had an eye for cleanliness were assigned the job of scavenging the kingdom and keeping it clean. King Bharat had also appointed village heads whose job was to sort out disputes if any in the villages. Even my dispute with a vulture was sorted by a village head (a cow). Some young bullocks and cows who were good in commerce were assigned the jobs of trading. The kingdom exported milk and agri-produce. The tough donkeys and bullocks used to till the soil and when the crop was ready they used to pull the cart and deliver the produce to the neighbouring kingdoms. The tortoises, vultures and eagles in the kingdom carried the agri-produce across the rivers. This brought wealth to the kingdom. Overall the Cows Kingdom was thriving. No one was labeled and everyone received remuneration and opportunities based on their capabilities, without any caste system or gender bias. There was job rotation too. A scavenger was trained to teach students if he had the capability. The bullock who tilled the land was trained to deal in commerce. Thus everyone was happy and they all respected the King for this. But the king had an adversary in a cow of a foreign breed. He had become very jealous of his success. His name was Irsha. He wanted to bring down the King by hook or by crook so that he could take over the Kingdom to fulfil his aspirations. He also imported cows of his breed to subjugate the locals after consulting his mother.

            ‘So what did they do?’ Asked Udaan.

            ‘To bring down, King Bharat, they collaborated with the vultures and wolves across the river who got the eagles and the foxes to work for them. Irsha thought the wolves were his friends and that they would dethrone King Bharat and make him the king. But when the wolves entered the kingdom for the final assault, they stealthily attacked and killed Irsha and his associates first. They then killed King Bharat and declared the kingdom as the ‘Wolves Den.’

            ‘But why Irsha first?’ asked Udaan.

            ‘Because one kills the traitor first because he is considered unreliable.

            ‘But how did the wolves take over the kingdom? Asked another bird in the skein. Samay was now feeling a little shaky. He looked around to see if anyone was watching him …

            ‘Irsha and the wolves drew a plan to take over the kingdom by training some vultures and sent them to the kingdom to spread hatred. These vultures started convincing the bullocks and cows in charge of scavenging that they were put to menial jobs whereas the king’s favourites were given better positions in the kingdom. 

            They even trained foxes and eagles across the river to spread a smear campaign against the Cow Kingdom. One night these devious animals crossed the river and entered the Cow’s Kingdom in the night. They killed a few calves and went back without being noticed. This created a huge furore in the morning and Irsha started blaming King Bharat for it.

            The D-Day was not far now. On one dark Amavasiya night, the wolves entered the Cow’s Kingdom from the landlocked side and killed Irsha first along with his associates and then they killed King Bharat and his bodyguards and took over the kingdom.

            Samay could now spot a few eagles approaching. Perhaps they were coming to attack the swans. Samay cautioned Udaan. He understood the danger and the skein left forthwith for their next destination. Samay was killed by the eagles. The Cow’s Kingdom had finally turned into a Wolf’s Den.

            The moral of the story: It is important to nourish your aspirations but with the right means. If you use the wrong means to fulfil your aspirations it might boomerang on you just as it boomeranged on Irsha. Stay united or you’ll be killed like the Cows in the Cow’s Kingdom.

        DA VINCI: UNVEILING COMPASSION THROUGH CUISINE

'I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men' ... LEONARDO DA VINCI 
    One of the greatest minds in recorded history, Leonardo da Vinci was a sensitive man. Only a sensitive man like him could have painted the legendary Mona Lisa, La Gioconda. Are sensitivity and vegetarianism interwoven human attributes? Perhaps, they are. Ghazal maestro Mehdi Hasan once told me that he gave up eating meat with these words, "Ibadat-e-mausiqi mein jaanwaron ke qatl se khalal padta hai" - the worship of music is hampered by the killing of animals.
    Persian mystic Jalaluddin Rumi was also a vegetarian. He believed that all lives were sacred, "Even a seemingly lifeless stone has a degree of consciousness; respect it. "Like many mystics, especially Rabia Basri, Rumi was a staunch vegetarian and shunned even milk and milk products. They were today's vegans. Rumi even refrained from sacrificing animals as an Islamic ritual on Eid-al-Adah, Bakrid.
    This is the apogee of compassion and fellow feeling. Here, the point is not to condemn non-vegetarianism. It is just a symbol, a metaphor, to be precise. This shows the totality of compassion and a complete banishment of violence of any imaginable sort.
    Animals are not inferior creatures. Leonardo da Vinci wrote in his note book, "Look at all animals as you look at humans." This creates sensitivity that further blossoms into universal empathy. The sanctity of every life is to be saved and preserved.
    Da Vinci makes us believe that what we eat, directly influences our thinking. It is like the Eastern thinking: 'Jaisa anna, vaisa mann.' If we consume an animal, its blood and gore will make us act like a slaughterer. Elsewhere, he said. "Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places.
    Instead of circulating inauthentic and unverified teachings of Rumi and Leonardo da Vinci, maybe we should popularise their spiritually trenchant views on animal-killing for one's palate. Rumi, da Vinci, Keats, Einstein, Tolstoy, Franz Kafka, Shelly, GB Shaw, Pythagoras and Alexander Pope were all vegetarians.
    Our compassion is often limited to humans. It doesn't encompass all creatures. We often argue that animals were created by the Creator for human consumption. This, is a very warped way of thinking. Creator, if at all it does exist, cannot be so ruthless as to create animals for our palate.
    Leonardo da Vinci wrote, "Sensitivity makes us compassionate, and compassion is not just a quality. It's a virtue. A virtuous heart is always ethical and embraces all creatures on the Earth; from the tiniest to the biggest. So, be sensitive and compassionate to all." And Leo Tolstoy underscored this by saying, "Compassion and vegetarianism go hand in hand." They indeed go together. We need to love animals, not devour them.
    April 15 is Leonardo da Vinci's birth anniversary.
