RAINER MARIA RILKE’S GEOGRAPHY OF SOLITUDE

    The famous Greek philosopher Aristotle once said, “Man is by nature a social animal.” Conversely, Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) the Bohemian-Austrian poet spoke of the ‘geography of solitude.’

    Rainer Maria Rilke was an outstanding and widely read poet of the twentieth century. His publications, ‘The Book of Images’ (1902), ‘The Book of Hours’ (1905), and especially ‘New Poems’ (1907 and 1908), established him as a major German poet at the time. Rilke travelled and kept writing all his life. ‘Letters to a Young Poet’ is a collection of 10 letters that Rilke wrote to Franz Xaver Kappus, a 19-year-old officer cadet in the academy. Rilke too had studied at the academy’s lower school in lower Austria in the 1890s. Kappus corresponded with Rilke between 1902 and 1908 seeking his guidance on the quality of his poetry, and deciding between a literary or an officer’s career in the Austro-Hungarian Army. Kappus compiled and published these letters in 1929—three years after Rilke’s death from leukaemia.

    The letters narrate how Rilke embraced his isolation and turned it into a creative force. Rilke talks of the benefits of solitude and how poetic practice requires the geography of solitude. He explains how solitude is not merely a matter of being alone, but it is a territory to be entered upon and occupied and he provides a map of how to accomplish those ends:      

    The first step is the acceptance that solitude exists. A lack of connection with other people is not something we look forward to or welcome. Rilke hardly assented to the isolation he felt during his schooling, nor did he welcome it when he moved to Paris to write about Rodin (‘how alone I was this time among these people, how perpetually disowned by all I met’). In both cases, gloom and fear had overcome him. In Paris before going to bed at night he used to read the ‘Book of Job’ for solace: ‘It was all true of me, word for word!’

    Rather than continue to suffer in aloneness, Rilke eventually does what he advises Kappus to do: he turns and embraces it. He takes isolation to be given, then he enters it and inhabits it.

    This trick of reversal, of turning negatives into positives, became a regular part of Rilke’s working life. Anxiety, fear, sadness and doubt: there is no human emotion that cannot be upended and put into service. The desire to flee from solitude can be converted into ‘a kind of tool’ to make solitude still larger. When doubts arise, simply ‘school them’: ‘Instead of being demolishers they will be among your best workers’ … he thought.

    ‘The land of solitude doesn’t mean that what follows will be easy. In my own experience, embracing solitude brings on another order of difficulties. When I was young and beginning to write, I used to put myself through periods of ritual retreat. I would cut off the telephone and the mail, unplug the television and the radio, take a short-term vow of silence, pull down the window shades and settle into work for three or four days. Often on the first, much to my chagrin, I would fall into a depression. The whole exercise suddenly seemed pointless; I had my pen in my hand but nothing to say’. Something similar also happened to Rilke while he was living more or less alone in a medieval castle on the Adriatic coast near Trieste when, in the winter of 1911-12, he began to write the Duino Elegies (a collection of poems).

    In the ten letters, Rilke proceeds to advise Kappus on how a poet should feel about solitude and love, and seek truth in trying to understand and experience the world around him and engage the world of art. These letters offer an insight into the ideas and themes that appear in Rilke’s poetry and his working process. Rilke’s reputation as a poet was established with the publication of ‘The Book of Hours and The Book of Images’. Through the books, Rilke tried to convey the ‘Geography of solitude.’

    It is worth pausing over the mention of ‘sadness’, both because ‘great sadnesses’ figure in the letters to Kappus and because they belong to the geography of solitude. Solitude for Rilke was the necessary enclosure within which he could begin to form an independent identity, a sense of himself free from the callings of family and convention. ‘Solitude is the alembic of personhood, as the alchemists might have said. And yet its entrances seem to be guarded by feelings that would make most people turn and walk the other way- not just sadness, but anxiety, fear, doubt, premonitions of death, ‘all unsettling, all pain, all depression of spirit …’

    Whatever the exact metaphysics of such encounters, the point is that an exploration of the land of solitude cannot begin until we have accepted solitude as a fact that we are alone.

      Solitude or loneliness is a worldwide problem. Rilke teaches us how to deal with it.

    Holi is celebrated on the full moon day of Phalguna (February-March). It coincides with the arrival of spring and the tail of winter. Spring is the season of change close to the Rabi harvest. This is when the old foliage begins to shred (abscission) and the new leaves arrive (leaf out). It is during Holi that nature reviews Mother Earth.

    The Europeans were particularly fascinated by the festival of colours. They described it as ‘“the carnival of the Hindus,” or the “Hindu spring festival” in the honour of Krishna, the amorous cowherd.’ Though Holi reminds you of the colourful rainbow, it is certainly not an illusion but a cultural reality of spirit and shades that bucks India up in the backdrop of Maja-Masti, reminding you of the famous Amitabh Bachchan song, ‘Khai Ke Pan Banaras Wala’ from film Don. Holi has given countless movies and dance sequences to Bollywood the entertainment centre of India, like, ‘Holi Aayi Re’ from the film Mashaal,the famous Hema Malini (Holi) dance sequence from the film ‘Sholay’ and the all-time great iconic Holi song, ‘Rang Barse Bhige Chunar Wali’ picturised on Rekha, Jaya, Amitabh and Sanjeev Kumar, in film Silsila.

    Holi celebrates the empyrean love of Radha and Krishna. It highlights the ascendancy of good over evil and marks the victory of Lord Vishnu as Narasimha over Hiranyakashipu. There is a legend in the Bhagavata Purana that elucidates why Holi is celebrated as a festival of triumph, of good over evil in the honour of Lord Vishnu and his devotee Prahalada. King Hiranyakashipu, the father of Prahlada, was the king of the demoniac Asuras. He had earned a boon that gave him five special powers like. He would neither be killed by a human being nor an animal, neither indoors nor outdoors, neither during the day nor at night, neither by an astra nor by a shastra, and neither on land nor in water or air. This made Hiranyakashipu arrogant. He thought he had become God, and demanded that everyone worship him. Hiranyakashipu’s son, Prahalada, however, remained devoted to Vishnu. This infuriated Hiranyakashipu. He subjected Prahlada to several punishments, but none changed Prahalada or his resolve to do what he thought was right. Finally, Holika, Prahlada’s sinful aunt, tricked him into sitting on a pyre with her. She had the boon of not getting incinerated by fire but on that fateful day, the reverse happened. She got burnt and Prahalada came out unscathed. Soon, Lord Vishnu appeared as an avatar to restore Dharma and took the form of Narasimha – half human and half lion (which is neither human nor an animal), at dusk (when it was neither day nor night). He took Hiranyakashyapu to the doorstep (which was neither indoor nor outdoor), placed him on his lap (which was neither land, water nor air), and then eviscerated and killed him with his lion claws (which were neither a handheld weapon nor a projectile).

    Holi is played with dry (Abir & Gulal) and wet colours with a traditional pichkari (water gun) that reminds you of the Bollywood song ‘Balam Pichkari’from the film ‘Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani.’ The revellers even chorus ‘bura na mano Holi hai’. People form tolis (small groups) and move from one house to the other, to their friends and relatives wishing them a ‘Happy-Holi’ and singing songs and bhajans. They also hug (Gale Milna) each other on the occasion. The dry and wet playing colours depend on the weather. On the foregoing night of Holi, a bonfire is lit on the roads which is symbolic of the Holika-Dahan (the incineration of Holika) the victory of good over evil—Prahalada over Hiranyakashipu. Celebrants get smouldering twigs of that fire to their homes as a symbol of the victory of right over wrong and to rid their homes of any evil omens.  People eat and drink mithai, gujia, shakkarpaare, dahi-vada, bhang and thandai. They forgive and forget their past differences and come together once again. Nature has created umpteen occasions for human beings to come together and Holi is one of them.

    For foreigners, the bright colours of Holi and India have always had a fond connection. Holi is predominantly celebrated in the Indian subcontinent but has also spread to other regions of Asia and parts of the Western world through the diaspora. At times it is associated with exoticism or primitivity, nevertheless, the festival for years has been seen as an essential segment of the Indian cultural landscape.

THE ‘OVERCOATS’ OF NIKOLAI GOGOL AND RUSKIN BOND

     I just returned from a short holiday in Kasauli, Himachal Pradesh, a picturesque hill station where I’m a member of the well-known Kasauli Club. The place was freezing at 6000 feet. The weather warranted that we wear an ‘Overcoat’ when outdoors almost all the time to be comfortable. Our club premises are adjacent to the languishing bungalow of the noted author late Khushwant Singh. Strangely, the combination of Kasauli and the Overcoat reminded me of two famous short stories that I had read some time ago by two noted authors. One was Ruskin Bond, who was born in Kasauli in 1934 and who wrote a short story titled ‘Overcoat’. The other was the famous Ukrainian-born Russian author, Nikolai Gogol, who too, wrote a short story titled ‘The Overcoat’. Not even for a moment I’m trying to compare the two authors for their literary heft but merely trying to put across the point as to how the girth of an overcoat created two impactful stories.

    Though the stories have the same title ‘Overcoat’, their plots are different and they have an eerie connection between them; ending up with a ghost—which is a surprising coincidence. Just as overcoats are worn in cold climates the two short stories were also written in cold weather conditions. One in Ukraine and the other on the hills of present-day Uttaranchal where Ruskin Bond lives. The plots too play out in the cold weather and so do the ghosts.

     “The Overcoat” by Nikolai Gogol, was published in the year 1842 and had a great influence on Russian literature. Ruskin Bond on the other hand is one of India’s well-known authors and started writing in the second half of the 20th century.

    But why is it that the two authors who were a century apart and a continent away from each other find a common cause in an overcoat and pen a story ending up with a ghost? Gogol brought forward the economic distress in the Russian capital of St. Petersburg. He flags the life-and-death of a titular councillor Akaky Akakievich Basmachkin, an impoverished government clerk. Though dedicated to his job, he is faintly recognised in his department for his hard work. And the younger clerks tease him and attempt to distract him whenever they can. His threadbare overcoat is often the centre of their jokes.  

    In contrast, Ruskin Bond’s ‘Overcoat’ is set in a hill station. It’s about a merry encounter with a ghost. The Overcoat by Nikolai Gogol is a serious read that ends up in a tragedy whereas Ruskin Bond’s Overcoat is a light story that ends up in a vacuum.

    When the overcoat of Basmachkin gets beyond repair he is forced to buy a new one. The cost of a new overcoat is beyond Akaky’s meagre salary, so he forces himself to live within a strict budget to save sufficient money to buy a new overcoat. In addition, he gets an unexpected salary bonus and with that he manages to buy a new overcoat. Celebrations follow. His superior decides to host a party in honour of the new overcoat, but Akaky who is habitually solitary feels out of place. After the party, Akaky goes home, far later than he normally would. But en route home, two ruffians short-shrift him, take his coat, kick him down badly, and leave him in the snow to die.  Akaky gets no help from the authorities in recovering his lost overcoat.

    Finally, on the advice of another clerk in his department, he asks for help from an important person, a Russian general recently promoted to his position. After keeping Akaky waiting, the general queries as to why he had brought such a trivial matter to him, personally, and not presented it to his secretary. Socially inept, Akaky makes an unflattering remark about departmental secretaries, inviting a loud scolding from the general that he nearly faints and has to be led away from the general’s office. Soon after, Akaky falls, seriously ill with a fever. In his last hours, he is delirious, imagining himself again sitting before the general. At first, Akaky pleads for forgiveness, but as his death nears, he curses the general.

   Soon, a ghost, identified as Akaky’s ghost, haunts areas of St. Petersburg, snatching overcoats from people. The police are unable to catch him. Finally, Akaky’s ghost catches up with the general, who since Akaky’s death, had begun to feel guilty for having mistreated him. The ghost finally takes the general’s overcoat by frightening him intensely. Satisfied, Akaky is not seen again. The narrator ends his narration with the account of another ghost seen in another part of the city. It is a simple story of a common man and his tribulations, and the final denouement.

    In contrast, Ruskin Bond has three characters in his story. The story starts with the narrator’s journey through the hills to attend the Kapadia party. As he is walking through the hills, he comes across a girl who also joins him for the party. She calls herself Julie. The narrator doesn’t ask questions from her as he is new in the area. Soon, they arrive at the party. Kapadias think that the girl is the narrator’s relative while the narrator thinks that maybe she’s Kapadia’s relative. After the party ends, the girl returns with the narrator. The author shares the weather in the story as the snow is falling. To protect Julie the narrator provides his overcoat to her to keep her warm. She tells the author that she lives in “Wolfsburg“. The narrator says he’ll come tomorrow and take his coat.

    The next day, the narrator goes to the location where Julie lived to get his overcoat. But he is told that no one by the name of Julie lives in the town. Soon, a neighbour “Mrs.Taylor” comes up and says that Julie had died years ago because of tuberculosis. She was the daughter of the Mackinnon family.

    This astonishes the narrator and he moves to the nearby graveyard where he finds Julie’s grave and his overcoat lying on it neatly wrapped and the story ends there.

    Let’s wait for the third overcoat.

TRIP TO MOUNT TITLIS, SWITZERLAND

    19 of August was a highlight day of our tour to Europe. On that day, we travelled to Mount Titlis in Switzerland. Switzerland is a dream destination for anyone. We left our hotel at 8.30 in the morning and arrived in Engelberg, the base camp at 10 AM. Engelberg is also called the ‘City of Angels’.  Mount Titlis is part of the Uri Alps, a mountain range in Central Switzerland and also a part of the Western Alps, and straddles the border between the cantons of Obwalden and Bern.    The main summit of Titlis is sometimes distinguished by the names Gross Titlis and Klein Titlis. They both are located between the municipalities of Engelberg on the north and Gadmen on the south.

    Titlis reminded me of the many movies made on World War II that were shot there. It also reminded me of the famous 1995 Shahrukh Khan blockbuster ‘Dil Wale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge.’ 

     Why is it that some places like Switzerland are scenically and nature-wise so rich and some are not? And are people living in these extraordinarily beautiful places extraordinarily blessed? I thought stupefied. Even the most relatable and descriptive prose or poetry would not be able to describe the inherent beauty of Engelberg and Mount Titlis for sure I surmised. And even the most high-tech camera will only capture those lofty magnificent sights and colours, frame by frame, yet the real fragrance and feel of it will remain aloof till one has been there. ‘A thing of beauty is a joy forever’ wrote the handsome romantic poet John Keats in his brilliant poem Endymion … but was it for Switzerland’s Titlis I pondered. The air was easy to breathe. At 3,238 metres above sea level, it was the highest summit of the range, north of the Susten Pass on the Swiss Alps, between the Bernese Oberland and Central Switzerland. Titlis is mainly accessed from the side of Engelberg a municipality in the canton of Obwalden in Switzerland. Engelberg is famous for being the site of the world’s first rotating cable car. The cable car system connects Engelberg at 1000 m to the summit of Klein Titlis at 3,238 m through the three phases of Gerschnialp at 1,262 m, Trubsee at 1,796 m and Stands at 2,428 m. In 2016, a direct route was created that bypassed Geraschnialp, going directly to Trübsee.

    We arrived nice and fresh in Engelberg. That indeed is the beauty of the weather there.  A short queue was there for the cable cars. We finally got into one. The journey to the top was completed in two cable car rides. Engelberg to Stands and Stands to Titlis located at an altitude of 10,500 feet. The 360-degree panoramic view from the cable car was splendid. There was a 5-storeyed building there. The ground level of the building had both the entry and exit gates for the cable cars. It also had retail shops where we went shopping for souvenirs and later had Movenpick ice cream. The weather was unusually warm on that particular day. Perhaps, a sign of global warming. With ease, we were roaming in half-sleeve T-shirts without any woollens. We could see some people paragliding from a spot there. The Titlis Cliff Walk and the Ice Cave were on the first level.    At Klein Titlis, we experienced the illuminated glacier cave from the entrance within the cable car station, which also included shops and restaurants. The Titlis Cliff Walk is the highest-elevation suspension bridge in Europe, opened in December 2012, giving some lovely views across the Alps. Many people use Titlis as an easier option than Jungfraujoch, a glacier saddled on the upper snows of the Aletsch Glacier. Both Titlis and Jungfraujoch are terrific. One should not miss the ice sculptures and cogwheel train to the top.

    We were there till 1.15 PM. Later we came down to Trusbee where we had an Indian meal of Pav-Bhaji, Dhokla, Gajar Halwa, Roti, and Rice. After lunch, we went down to Engelberg and travelled back to Lucerne City.

  It was a memorable day. In Lucerne, we first went to the Lion Monument dedicated to the Swiss Mercenaries who were killed during the French Revolution by stealth. The sad face of the lion there is dedicated to them. Since the artist who sculpted the Lion monument was not paid his due, he was annoyed, and he cursed them by keeping the lion within the outline of the swine which is considered an abuse.Then we came to Schwanenplatz the busy market area of Lucerne. It is next to the Lucerne Lake which has a sizeable population of ducks on the shore. There was so much to shop starting from Swiss watches, knives, chocolates etc. At 6.30 PM we were off to a dinner cruise. There we had the pleasure of listening to some Swiss folklore and local instruments. We also chorused Bollywood songs and danced on the upper deck of the boat. After enjoying the sail and dinner we left at eight for our hotel Seedamm Plaza. We were there by nine. It was the climax of our tour: Engelberg, Mount Titlis, Lion Monument, Lucerne Lake and the dinner cruise. We learnt that the government of Switzerland had installed a bust of Indian film producer Yash Chopra in the city of Interlaken because he promoted Switzerland in his films.
