NATURE: THE WORLD OF ANTS

    Did you know how many ants live in this world? According to a recent study, there are an estimated 20 quadrillion or 20,000 trillion ants in the world. They surpass the combined weight of all wild birds and mammals. That’s a lot of ants. Ants live on sidewalks, in houses, in fields, and in forests. Ants are everywhere.   They can be found almost anywhere in the world, except Antarctica, Iceland, Greenland, and some island nations.

    Ant is an active insect. Its slim waist helps it bend and wriggle through tunnels. Its six strong legs creep and crawl. Its two large eyes see the world. Their super tough jaws munch and crunch. Its long feelers touch and tap. If you see one ant, you will see lots more. Ants live in large groups. A group of ants is called a colony and a colony is where ants live together. Some colonies have millions of ants. An ant colony lives in a nest. Most ants build nests underground. An ant nest is full of tunnels. Each tunnel leads to a little room. Bulldog ants are considered quite strong in the community. Some ants do not live underground. They live inside hollow thorns, between rocks, in rotting trees and nests made of leaves.

        Brian Fisher is a scientist. He looks for new kinds of ants. Some people call him “The Ant-Man.” Dr. Fisher has found more than 800 new varieties of ants. He can’t wait to find more!

    Ant’s Life: The queen is the biggest ant in a colony. She lays eggs all day long.  When the eggs hatch, little larvae wriggle out of them. The larvae look like worms and are the second stage in the life of many insects. Larvae spend most of their time eating and growing—they eat and eat and eat. Pupae is the third stage in the life of many insects. A cocoon surrounds some ant pupae. Larvae turn into pupae. Pupae do not move. Pupae do not eat. After a few weeks, they turn into adult ants.

        Most of the ants in a colony are workers. All worker ants are females. Inside the Nest: Some worker ants dig new tunnels. Others take care of eggs, larvae, and pupae. Many ants eat other insects. Outside the Nest: Some worker ants collect food. Others guard the nest

    A few ants in the colony have wings. Some are females. Some are males. Ants with wings fly out of the nest. They start new colonies.

    Superhero Ants: Aqua Ant lives in Australia. She can swim, dive, and even live underwater. Mama Marvel is an African driver ant. She lays fifty million eggs in a year. Hulking Hercules is a bulldog ant. She can lift more than twenty times her body weight. The Big Biter is a trap-jaw ant. She has the fastest bite in the animal world. Biter can snap her jaw shut at a speed of 145 miles an hour.

        Most ants catch and eat other insects. Some ants eat dead animals. Leafcutter ants grow their own food. They have fungus gardens inside their nest. Fungus is a living thing which is neither a plant nor an animal. Mushrooms are a kind of fungus.

    Many ants take care of aphids. Aphids are small insects. They make sugary poop that ants like to eat.

    Some ants are known as the Army ants. Army ants hunt for food every day. Their colony looks like a moving, munching carpet. Army ants sting and bite everything in their path. They can kill insects, spiders, lizards, and even baby birds.

    An army ant colony can be as wide as a street. It can be longer than a football field. Army ants are not the only ants that sting and eat animals. There are Fire Ants too. Fire ants have poison that they inject into other insects, animals, and even people. It leaves a burning feeling. That is how fire ants got their name. There are more than 280 different kinds of fire ants.

    Ants are an important part of our world. They are food for other animals. Birds, frogs, and spiders eat ants. So do monkeys and aardvarks (a burrowing mammal). As ants dig tunnels, they mix the dirt. Plants grow better in the dirt, with ants.

    Leafcutter ants dig up a lot of dirt when they build a nest. Scientists weighed the dirt of one colony dug up. The dirt weighed as much as six elephants.

THE VALUE OF TIME

    We normally don’t realise the value of time and we tend to waste time. To realise the value of one year ask a student who has failed an exam. To realise the value of one month ask a mother who has given birth to a premature baby. To realise the value of one week, ask a weekly magazine editor. To realise the value of one day ask a daily wage labourer with several kids to feed. To realise the value of one hour ask the lovers waiting to meet. To realise the value of one minute ask the person who has survived an accident. To realise the value of a millisecond ask the person who has won a silver medal in the Olympics.

    Time is precious. The time we waste never comes back so value every moment that you have. Time monitors our existence. But time is stealthy. No one has ever seen it in person. Yet everyone has felt the tremors of time in various ways. Nonetheless, when the clock strikes time for a change we all can hear it. Time is the biggest mystery, healer, leveller, giver or even an opponent of mankind. It is most unpredictable and untamed. Having conquered the world one still loses to time. So beware of the wrath of time. Time is life. Needlessly wasting other’s time is no different than robbing and murder.

        In our youth, we control and make use of time. In old age, time controls us, and we can only succumb to it. In our youth, no one feels the flow of time but during old age, time feels as heavy as a mountain, crushing us.

    If you respect time, time will respect you.

    Life cannot blossom in a vacuum. It needs something to latch on to where the past comes in handy. Remember, our future rests on the toil of our yesterday. Our days ahead are an outcome of the struggle of our present. The years ahead slumber on our unruffled dreams waiting to unravel. This is when the unfigured life ahead, tow-chains with the pristine past.

    A chapter titled ‘The Journey of Life (Excerpt)’ in the book ‘365 Days for Travellers—Wisdom from Chinese Literary and Buddhist Classics’ edited by Venerable Editor Master Hsing Yun makes an interesting point. It says, ‘Who said not to look at the past? Past successes can give us encouragement or examples to improve upon. The failures of the past are great experiences and exactly the things to learn. The blank spaces of the past are exactly what encourages us to exert ourselves to compensate for it.     

    The chapter also talks about the present. It says, if it’s suffering, you are currently being tormented and if it’s happiness—you are currently enjoying it. But, do not get knocked down by suffering, nor get intoxicated by joy. Be mindful because the present moment passes in the blink of an eye. No matter how grand the happiness is, it’ll pass. We should be happy and we should cherish the past and the present journey because we never know what tomorrow will bring.

    In the journey of life, there are wide open roads, as well as small wooden bridges. Do not be envious of those who walk on open roads, and do not mock those who walk on open roads, and do not mock those who walk on small wooden bridges. Only those who experience it themselves would understand the flavour of life. You can only accept it when it happens to you, without running away.’

    My serenades of today are all because of those accomplished rehearses of my past. But this is certainly not adequate because beyond is the harsh and cruel environment where one needs to fight on and on to get to a glamorous future.

    Sanity exhorts us to forget the past and enjoy the present because the future is unknown. But I say, the unknown will be unknown till it is shown, so be with your present, but with your experience. The bright days ahead will only evolve out of your achievement. Achievement is like heaven that’ll come with your perspiration and perseverance.

    But before the flashy today and the glamorous tomorrow, it was only my laborious spell in the past that held my hand and showed me the directional arrow. And beware, as and when the flashy today and glamorous tomorrow dwindle, much will be gone and little will be left for the days ahead, but yes, there will be a treasure to applaud, that lies in the realms of the past and the bygone days.

    This is when you’ll realise, that there is no rollicking future without a great past,

but there is a great past even without a rollicking future. Work hard today that helps your tomorrow and even rewards you with a rich yesterday.

“The strongest desire of a man is to live on this planet forever. But the reality is that the world is only a sojourn. This mismatch between desire and reality creates serious agonies”

How many divisions will we see?

How many religions will we see?

How many dissensions will we see?

And how many isms will we see?

*

The God is only one,

The globe is only one,

The nature is only one,

All human beings have two legs,

And they all die in the end,

So what is the fight for?

*

Man forgets,

That planet Earth is only a sojourn,

He thinks it is his permanent abode,

Where he ignores the God of death,

Who has his return ticket?

*

He belittles the time-tested idiom which is “as sure as death”,

And keeps hoping that only others will die,

He aspires to divide and rule,

So that he can become the Guru.

*

He doesn’t want to learn from Mother Nature,

Which is God’s second nature,

He thinks he has become the supremo,

By condoning the fact that he will ultimately have to go.

*

He starts from a hallowed platform,

Where the consensus was to respect all religions,

But he begins by demeaning other religions.

*

The understanding was to accommodate all isms,

But he starts by criticising other isms,

And while doing all this,

He forgets that his sojourn on planet Earth,

Will soon come to an end.

*

He creates continents,

He creates countries within continents,

He creates states within countries,

He fights wars to capture others’ territory,

He thinks he has a permanent address,

But his return ticket is waiting in the wings.

And when the moment arrives,

He leaves abruptly,

Leaving behind,

The divisions,

The religions,

The isms,

And the debates.

    Why were so many dharnas, agitations and public movements required to build Assam and the North East? Find it out for yourself by reading the book. The voluminous text under the guise of Assam covers the political history of undivided Assam, more precisely the northeast. It covers the period between 1947 and 1971. I would fancy calling this treatise the Political History of the North East as it was only after the independence that Assam was divided into various smaller states in the decades to follow.

    But let’s stop here for a moment to ponder if such narrations (Political History) are conducive and should be written. Well, they are useful, provided, they capture the untold story of the state from reliable sources. Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam, deserves praise for approving this.

    The uniqueness of the title is that it stems from the archives of the state and the central government, the public sector, libraries, newspapers, columns, books by citizens, and recorded statements of political and social heads who squarely construct the narrative. It is not a politically driven narrative but a neutral one based on facts. The archive records put the ruling dispensation of those times, especially the government of India, in poor light.

    The title enumerates the linguistic and ethnic fissures of the North East after independence. It tells the gory story of the partition of India on the eastern border and the scheming role of the Muslim League in dividing her. The leaders of the Muslim League allowed Muslims from East Pakistan to enter India and live here only to build a sizeable Muslim population and dwarf the local population of Hindus, the effects of which are still visible. It also reveals the names of certain Indian Muslim leaders of that era who were close to Mohammed Ali Jinnah.

    The editor appears dispassionate in his job because of which the narration enjoys that flush of impartiality. Eminent people from all walks of life have contributed munificently in bringing this spine to light. The book is divided into eight chapters, which are further divided into sub-chapters. This does not include the customary chapters. The catchy foreword is by the honourable Chief Minister of Assam.

    A striking point that repeatedly comes up chapter after chapter is how the Congress government of Assam had to entreat the government of India for projects and issues relevant to the North East. To succinctly put it, Assam and the North East required many agitations, protests, and strikes to progress.   No state, region or country is complete without the panorama of its history and mythology. The book does well to cover that. As a border region, the northeast had to face many invasions and wars described well in the pages one after another. The Tea industry has been the mainstay of Assam. The chapter is a real eye-opener when it comes to tea. The book is a comprehensive assortment of institutions, movements, local heroes and the all-time great personalities of India.  It has some explosive chapters too. For example, did Nehru for the sake of the vote bank tamper with the ethnic and demographic tapestry of Assam and the northeast? The answer lies embedded in the pages of the title.

     Why were things not as easy for the North East as they were for the western borders of India? So many dharnas and agitation were required to build Assam. Assam unlike Punjab (both border states) which was close to the capital had tough logistics and credibility issues while tackling the government of India.  The central leadership was perhaps not aware of the complexities of the region. For every small project, Assam had to confront the government of India.

    The book does well in capturing the ancient history of the land. The sources of data collection are extensive.  Northeast is a complete potpourri of cultures. There was bitterness and mistrust between the plains (Assam), the hills and the government.  Language was always a sensitive issue.   The people of the northeast had to continuously fight for their identity. This spoke of the complexity of the land where they belonged to. The curse of partition and its shady manoeuvres haunts Assam and the northeast even today. Northeast was subject to linguistic dissensions. Assam is a politically sensitive border state. There was a time when people called it a Cinderella State.

    The narrative is a brilliant effort by the Government of Assam. Congratulations to the education minister and the editor too. The idea should be embraced by all Indian states to understand their current position and trace their origins.

An inspiring story from Bhagavata Purana

    Once there lived a king named Uttanapada (son of Manu). He was married to two queens, Suruchi and Suniti. They had two sons, Uttama and Dhruva respectively. King Uttanapada was more attached to Queen Suruchi.

    One day while Uttama was playing on the lap of King Uttanapada, as a child, Dhruva too wanted to play with his father. So he tried to get onto his father’s lap. Suruchi, Dhruva’s stepmother, saw this and got angry. She chastised Dhruva, “Get down from your father’s lap, Dhruva! You cannot sit there because you have not taken birth from my womb.”

    King Uttanapada seemed helpless and could not stop Suruchi even though she was inflicting pain on his little five-year-old son. Dhruva burst into tears and ran to his mother and narrated what had happened. Queen Suniti immediately lifted her son and tried to pacify him. She consoled,

    ‘Don’t cry my child and do not take offence of your stepmother. Remember, only Lord Narayana can fulfil your desire. But you must perform penance to seek his blessings.’

    Dhruva was prepared to do anything to get what he wanted, but because he was just a little boy he had to ask his mother, ‘Ma! Where can I find Lord Narayana?’ He asked. Suniti did not have an answer to his question but she told Dhruva that saintly people go to the forest and do penance (Tapasya) to find Lord Narayana.

    Though Dhruva was just five years old he was a determined child. So he went deep into the forest to meditate. In the meantime, the great sage Narada had come to know of what had happened and was awestruck. So he too went to the forest looking for Dhruva because he wanted to test Dhruva’s determination.

    Narada approached Dhruva and blessed him. He said ‘Dear child I know of your predicament, but it is not easy even for the greatest of sages to find God even after a long penance over many births. I think you should go back home.’

    But Dhruva was determined so he humbly submitted, ‘Respected Rishi Narada, I have been insulted by my stepmother. I therefore cannot follow your advice. I wish to occupy a more exalted and important position than my father, grandfather, or anyone else. If you want to help me, please tell me how to find Lord Narayana.

    Sage Narada then explained to Dhruva how to perform penance to find Lord Narayana.

    Heeding sage Narada’s advice, Dhruva reached the forest of Madhuvana where he took a bath in River Yamuna and remained without food all night. For the first month, Dhruva ate only fruits and berries every day. He ate just enough to keep his body and soul together.

     In the second month, he ate only dry grass and leaves once in six days. In the third month, he drank water, once in nine days. He remained in a trance while worshipping the Lord. In the fourth month, he mastered pranayama, the art of breathing, and thus inhaled air only on every twelfth day. In this manner, he became proficient in meditation. His mind and body were now fully fixed for Lord Narayana.

    By the fifth month, Dhruva had controlled his breathing to such perfection that he was able to stand on one leg, like a column. He concentrated fully on the Supreme Lord and could now feel Lord Narayana in his heart.

    But surprisingly when Dhruva was engaged in deep meditation the feeling of the Lord residing in his heart suddenly disappeared. He thought he had lost him. Anxious, he broke his meditation. But when he opened his eyes, he saw Lord Narayana standing before him. Bewildered Dhruva fell on the lotus feet of the Lord. He wanted to offer prayers and gratitude, but mesmerized he could not even speak. Lord Narayana could understand Dhruva’s emotions, and out of mercy, He touched Dhruva’s cheek with His conch shell.

    Dhruva returned to his senses and was blessed with all the Vedic knowledge. He comprehended the ‘Ultimate Truth’ of life and his connection with all living beings.    With folded hands, Dhruva addressed Lord Narayana. He said, ‘Bhagwan before you blessed me I wanted more wealth and power than anyone else in the world but now I realise how foolish I was. I was searching for broken pieces of glass all along but now I have found You my Lord, the most valuable jewel. I now know I need nothing else but you. There is no reward greater than You.’

    Upon hearing His ardent devotee, Lord Narayana blessed Dhruva and awarded him the highest planet, ‘Dhruvaloka.’

    Meanwhile, Narada met King Uttanapada and asked him not to worry about Dhruva. When Dhruva returned from the forest he was given a grand reception.     King Uttanpada enthroned Dhruva as the emperor of the planet and left for the forest for his spiritual realization.

    Dhruva, now Maharaja Dhruva at the age of six ruled the earth as its king for many years. Later he handed over his kingdom to his son and left for the forest in the Himalayas. He meditated in pursuit of the Lord and entered into a complete trance. In the last few hours of his life, a celestial vehicle descended with two personal associates of Lord Narayana. Dhruva was then taken to Dhruvaloka, an eternal spiritual planet where he now resides eternally.

    Dhruvaloka, also known as Dhruv nakshatra, Dhruv-tara or the Pole Star, is the brightest star in the night sky. Even today when you look at the night sky you see the brightest star. Dhruva though a young child was able to see the Lord Himself because of his determination.

    The Sanskrit term Dhruva nakshatra has been used for the Pole-Star in the Mahabharata, personified as the son of Uttanapada the grandson of Manu.
