The Tentacles of AI

    Though AI is a very recent invention, the apprehensions it raises are age-old. For aeons, myths, epics, and the great works of literature have asked the same question: Does knowledge always accompany wisdom? Can human beings control the power centres that they create? What happens when human ambition becomes greater than morality?

    In the Bhagavad Gita, Lord God Krishna exhorts Arjuna to do his duty without worrying about the results. In the same way, AI works without desire or personal ambition. It performs tasks and processes information, but has no emotions, ego, or personal goals. The evergreen lesson of the Gita reminds us that power should always be guided by responsibility and moral values.

    Mythology offers many such lessons. In the story of Bhasmasura, Lord Shiva grants a boon that allows Bhasmasura to burn anyone to ashes by just touching their head. Instead of using this power wisely, Bhasmasura becomes arrogant and even tries to use it against Shiva himself. In the end, he destroys himself. The story shows that power without wisdom can lead to disaster. AI can be beneficial or harmful depending on how it is used.

    The story of Ravana teaches a similar lesson. Ravana was highly intelligent, powerful, and devoted, but his pride and arrogance led to his downfall. His abilities did not make him evil; rather, they magnified the flaws already present within him. AI can also magnify human fancies. If people use it with good intentions, it can help society. If they use it carelessly or selfishly, it can create disasters.

    The same concern is there in the literature. In the epic poem Beowulf, the hero defeats monster Grendel not because he is strong but because he uses his strength for a noble purpose. This teaches us that power alone is not enough. It must be guided by wisdom and good intentions. AI is also a powerful tool, but its potency depends on how human beings choose to use it.

    In Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Victor Frankenstein creates a life but refuses to take responsibility. The creature is not born evil. It becomes dangerous because it is abandoned and neglected. The novel teaches that creators must accept responsibility for what they create. This lesson is especially relevant today because AI systems are also created by humans and reflect human decisions, values, and mistakes.

    In Goethe’s Faust, the main character seeks unlimited knowledge and power. His desire becomes so strong that he crosses moral boundaries. The story warns that the pursuit of knowledge without ethical values can be disastrous. AI gives humanity access to enormous amounts of knowledge and information, but knowledge alone does not guarantee wisdom.

    Modern classics continue with these warnings. George Orwell’s 1984 describes a society where surveillance and control limit individual freedom. Today, some people fear that AI could be used in similar ways through data collection and monitoring. Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World presents a society where people are controlled through comfort, pleasure, and technology. It reminds us that efficiency and convenience should never replace human freedom and individuality.

    William Shakespeare’s The Tempest offers another important example. Prospero uses his magical powers to control people and events around him. His power is not good or bad by itself; its value depends on how he uses it. AI is similar. It is a powerful tool, and its impact depends largely on the intentions of those who control it.

    People have often feared new technologies. The famous American composer John Philip Sousa worried that recorded music would stop people from singing. Yet music became more popular than ever. Similarly, computers can now play chess better than the world’s best human players, but people still enjoy playing chess because it is a creative and enjoyable activity.

    Today, AI creates both excitement and concern. Some people believe it will solve major problems and improve life, including cancer detection and treatment, while others fear it may take away jobs or create new risks. The truth is likely to be somewhere between these two extremes. AI will certainly change many aspects of society, but its full impact is still difficult to predict. AI will also clash with plagiarism.

    Therefore, the real similarity between AI, mythology, and literary classics lies in their exploration of human nature. All of them remind us that power, knowledge, and innovation must be balanced by wisdom, responsibility, and ethical values. The greatest danger is not the technology itself but the possibility that human ambition may outpace human virtue. The future of AI will depend not only on how intelligent machines become, but also on how wisely human beings choose to use them.

BOOK REVIEW: BEOWULF- AN ANGLO-SAXON SAGA

   The super epic sonnet Beowulf is the most popular surviving piece of Anglo-Saxon literature that tells us the story of a renowned warrior and his battles with legendary mythical beasts across the Scandinavian world. Beowulf had the strength of 30 men in his hand grip.

    Beowulf, a hero of the Geats comes to the aid of Hrothgar, king of the Danes, whose great hall, Heorot, is plagued by the monster Grendel. Beowulf kills Grendel with his bare hands and Grendel’s mother undersea with a giant sword which he finds in her lair. Fifty years later, as king of Geatland, his last showdown is with a mightily annoyed dragon. The epic is a riveting adventure story at its heart.

    It has survived since the Anglo-Saxon period. The plot is set in Scandinavia and originates in the Nordic or Viking invasion of Britain, preceding the Norman invasion at the turn of the first millennium, in 1066. The composition has been frequently referenced as a source of socio-cultural information about the British people of those times because there is a shortage of historical documentation relating to that period. This was due to the historical significance of oral tradition, rather than written, so very little was actually recorded.

    There is a possibility that numerous other stories were also written at the same time as Beowulf, but Beowulf was the only one to survive the ravages of time. Remarkably, any manuscript of such antiquity should have survived at all, given that the British climate is better suited to deterioration and decay than desiccation and preservation. The manuscript was also badly damaged by fire along the way, but somehow its cargo of words journeyed from the Dark Ages, through the Middle Ages and into the Modern Age. As a result, Beowulf is a unique and significant artefact.

    The epic was written anonymously, adding an element of mystery and intrigue. As relatively few people could read and write then. The story was most probably written by a monk or someone with academic inclination.

    The manuscript is known as the Nowell Codex and contains several other documents in addition to Beowulf. It is written in Old English and is thought to date from around the 10th and early 11th centuries, which equates to the transition from the Early Medieval Period to the Middle Medieval Period. At that time, Old English was still in its archaic form, having absorbed some Norse influence, but was yet to be influenced by the Franconian tongue of the Normans, which led to the Middle English.

    Since Old English was constrained in its lexicon, the original Beowulf manuscript is written in alliterative poetry. This means that the poetic device is the repetition of vocal sounds, rather than the rhyme or syllabic structure we usually think of as poetry.

    Beowulf comprises 3,182 lines of alliterative verse. This method of documenting the story may have been the choice of the author. It is likely that the story itself was related in any number of ways by the different storytellers of the time, but that the author took it upon himself to add some artistic license because an epic poem carried more cachet as a literary work. This would have also presented the author with a far greater and more satisfying creative challenge.

    It is a fairly straightforward tale of a character Beowulf around the 5th century, who is destined to become the king of the Geats, a Swedish tribe. In the narrative, he battles a monster named Grendel and then faces an attack by Grendel’s mother. Many years later he is also confronted by a dragon. These three heroic trials are the key to establishing the legend of Beowulf, as they are used to demonstrate his fearlessness and strength as a leader of men.

    The major part of the tale of Beowulf is a work of entertainment imbued with supernatural elements that reflect the belief systems of specific people. In a world where tribes continually fought over territory and resources, there was constant uncertainty about the future. Add to the mix pagan superstitions and an unscientific view of the world, and the world in which Beowulf is set becomes one of supernatural possibility.

    But did Beowulf actually exist as a living person? Just like many accounts of kings in post-Roman Europe, there is probably an element of truth to this but we can never know for sure, precisely because there is no documentation or archaeological evidence to prove it.

    Upon the sad demise of Beowulf the people of Geats mourn their Lord as an ideal king before the Burning of Beowulf … ‘Said he was the kindest of kings under heaven, Gentlest of men, most winning of manner, Friendliest to folk-troops and fondest of honour.’

A PEEP INTO NATIVE AMERICAN LITERATURE

    The term “Native American Literature” relates to the stories of the natives of the New World. North and South America are known as the “New World”. The term originated because of the European voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. The Europeans discovered the two continents in the late 15th century. The expression “Native American Literature” in the real sense is a misnomer since the natives of the “New World” didn’t have writing traditions. There was no established alphabet or language in which the native tribes across the continents could write their stories.

    On the contrary, the Native Cultures had oral traditions. A story would be passed down from one generation to another orally. It would be told by a storyteller, usually around a campfire at night. The stories were often tweaked while storytelling, with each storyteller adding, his or her spin to it with unique gestures such as tone and other alterations to make it more interesting and spicy and even more probing in terms of the story details. The central theme of the story however remained intact and was given a new look and feel with each generation of storytellers.

    Umpteen parallels are available in history about oral traditions, later adopted into scripts. For example, scholars have debated if ‘Beowulf’ an old English epic poem in the tradition of Germanic heroic legend was initially transmitted orally. Beowulf was written mostly in the Late West Saxon dialect of Old English. In the 13th century, Genghis Khan did not permit military information to be written down; it had to be delivered orally. The messengers therefore had to learn to compose and recite military orders through “rhetorically ornate rhyming words and cryptic expressions”. Concurrently, the government used the Mongolian language written in Uighur script for non-military mundane affairs because they had no script of their own—so even borrowed scripts were in vogue. The Uighurs had extensive libraries of hand-copied manuscripts translated from Sanskrit, but under the Mongols, many Tibetan manuscripts were also translated into Uighur script.   Since the beginning of the 13th century, the Uighur script was adopted as the official script of the Mongol empire.

    Some cultures did have a system of written traditions like the Aztecs, now more or less an extinct language. Some cultures used hieroglyphics and pictographic drawings to record important stories and messages.

    The native nations across America shared no common language at the time of the Europeans’ arrival. In fact, no unified Native American culture existed at that time or any other time. The tribes and nations across the continents organised their societies in various ways. They had different economic and political systems, linguistic structures, and customs. The better-organised tribal societies co-existed along with hunter-gatherer societies. So, it was a genuine mix of cultures.

    The Europeans had comedies, tragedies, sonnets, and lyrics and the native cultures developed their own storytelling methods.

    Trickster tales were common across Native American cultures. A “trickster” was usually a rowdy, childlike prankster who created trouble wherever he went. He didn’t behave by the rules and had little respect for authority. But he had magical abilities. He could change his gender on his whim- to avoid getting caught or to cause mischief. A trickster was commonly associated with an animal. In the West, he was a coyote, in the Southeast a rabbit, and in the northern Great Plains a spider. A trickster would cause trouble, but at the same time he would convey an important message through a parable. Through the disorder that he caused, he pushed people to reflect on what they valued and knew. Tales of a familiar trickster character were usually strung into “cycles” of different episodes.

    Coyote is a major mythological figure for most Native American tribes, especially those west of the Mississippi. Like the real coyotes, the mythological Coyote is well known for his crafty intelligence, stealth, and voracious appetite.

    In a Clatsop Chinook trickster tale, the trickster Coyote learns about certain fishing taboos regarding fishing salmons in the river. After each failure, he angrily consults his excrements, who reveal another secret about properly catching, cutting, and cooking the fish. The Clatsop are a small tribe of Chinookan-speaking Native Americans in the Pacific Northwest of the United States.

    Like Europeans, Native American cultures had their own stories about how they came to be. The creation of Native American stories helped cultures understand their role on planet Earth. The stories were usually set in nature and had anthropomorphic characters, supernatural events, and complicated storylines. Many native cultures also had stories of the ‘great flood’, like the Judeo-Christian and other religious traditions worldwide.

    Like other cultures, Native American cultures too had specific rituals to welcome new life, celebrate rites of passage, and bury the dead. Information about conducting important rituals was shared through song, dance, and music. Stories about how the rituals came to be were often woven into long song cycles. One Mojave song cycle, composed of 525 songs, tells a creation story. The song cycle is sung over several days after someone dies. The cycle helps the deceased on his or her journey to the afterlife.
