SHORT STORY: ONE WAY TICKET OF THE RABBITS

     Once there were two ambitious rabbits who wanted to visit the sea. It was a difficult task because the sea was far off but they were determined to do so. They figured out that the river that passes through the nearby forest empties into the sea after a winding course. So they approached their friend tortoise and asked him if he would take them to the sea. But the tortoise refused as it was quite an uphill task carrying both of them on his back, all the way to the sea and then getting them back. Moreover, he had also been to the sea earlier so the proposal was not very attractive for him.

    One day the two rabbits saw a log floating in the river. They decided that if they were able to sit on it somehow, the floating log would take them straight to the sea and their journey would be effortless. So they plunged into the river and quickly swam across to the log and merrily went and sat on it. In this manner, their journey to the sea commenced. But a clever fox was watching this drill from the riverbank. He couldn’t understand, why the rabbits went and sat on the floating log and where were they going. He thought once they return to the riverbank he would have them for his meal so he kept following them, and the log too kept floating and so did the rabbits perched on it.

    Meanwhile, an eagle who was flying in the sky also saw the two meaty rabbits and thought there was a nice meal waiting for him. But the two rabbits were unaware of the impending danger, one from the sky and the other from the riverbank. Soon it started raining heavily and it became cold. With the heavy showers, the flow of the river intensified. The river ahead was now winding so the floating log was pushed towards the bank of the river and it got stuck there. Now the rabbits didn’t know what to do. They had no choice but to wait there. Soon they apprehended that an eagle might attack them so they went and hid in a burrow. The fox too, who was following them was on the verge of pouncing on them but the two rabbits ran in different directions to confuse the fox. Finally, they got rid of the fox somehow.

    Thereafter, they explored the vicinity and got some food to eat. Later, when it stopped raining the current of the river lessened and the log started drifting towards the centre of the river and the rabbits climbed back on it for their remaining journey to the sea. They were now feeling more confident that they were able to stave off so many dangers.

    After a few days, the two rabbits perched on the log finally reached the estuary—where the river meets the sea. Upon witnessing the grandeur of the sea the two rabbits felt exuberant that they had finally made it after hoodwinking the eagle and the fox and after braving the heavy showers. But after a couple of seasons and after enjoying and immersing in the beauty of the sea they felt homesick and thought of returning home. So they decided to wait near the estuary for another log to take them home but sadly none came. They asked a passing fish about the log that would take them home. The fish replied nothing goes upstream from the sea on its own. The log will only come down with the flow of water and will not go up. Then how do we go home asked the rabbits.

    ‘You can swim your way up or you can walk your way back to your home. But be cautious there are crocodiles in this river and a whole lot of predators in the forest.

    The moral of the story: It’s nice to be ambitious enough to go on a daring journey but before setting out, plan your return journey well in advance. It is not known whether the rabbits decided to settle in the estuary fearing the return journey or dared to return home where the deadly eagle and the cunning fox were waiting for them. So never travel with a one-way ticket even if the ticket is for the mystique moon.

SHORT STORY: HALF A BABY

    Once a tortoise and a bird were fishing for food when both gave birth to baby boys. A few days later the bird had some important work and requested the tortoise to look after her son. The tortoise readily agreed.

    As days passed the tortoise started believing that her son was uglier than the bird’s son, and she decided to swap the two boys.

    When the bird returned she saw the tortoise’s son lying in her bed and her son lying in tortoise’s bed. She asked the tortoise, ‘Why did you put your son in my bed and my son in your bed?’

   The tortoise retorted, ‘How dare you ask me this question?’

    The bird felt hurt and went looking for the tiger, the king of the jungle. Upon finding the tiger she narrated what had happened.  

   The tiger said, ‘I’ll definitely help you. Come let’s go,’ and the two set off.

    When they reached the home of the tortoise and the bird, the tiger asked the tortoise, ‘Which is your baby?’ The tortoise pointed at the baby bird in her bed.

   The bird said, ‘No-no, that’s my baby.’ Post which they started quarrelling.

    The tiger interrupted with a growl. ‘I don’t know whom to believe. Give the baby to me. I’ll cut it into two, and give you each, half a baby.’

    The tortoise nodded in agreement. But the bird pleaded, ‘No-no don’t cut the baby. If you don’t know who the mother is, please give this baby to the tortoise.’

   The tiger smiled. He took the baby bird from the tortoise’s bed, and gave it to the bird, telling the tortoise, ‘No mother would agree to cut her baby into half.

WHO IS MORE USEFUL?

    There was once an argument between a snake and bird. The bird said I have status. I’m more knowledgeable than you because I can fly across to so many places, get to see so many events and therefore I’m much more intelligent, knowledgeable and useful for the planet earth than you.

    The snake said by roaming around aimlessly and peeping into other’s lives you don’t become intelligent or knowledgeable. Look at me I’m the most grounded living being on earth. I can feel the pulse of the tectonic plates that holds the planet earth. I can exactly tell you the mood of the earth. The kind of knowledge that I have you don’t have.

    No-no you’re just a dormant creature cursed by God. Reason why you can’t even walk and therefore you slither on your ribs. Countered the bird again.

    But you’re not as rough and tough as me. People are scared of me. Have you heard of snake bite? People don’t therefore come near me. But no one is scared of a bird. People take you very lightly and they even cage you for their own pleasure. Will someone have the guts to cage a snake?

    They cage birds because they look beautiful and they can also chatter in their beautiful voices which human beings love hearing. And you can’t even speak barring your dangerous hiss that frightens everyone. Said the bird.

    Nearby a tortoise was watching this heated argument for a while now. He had never thought of life in this manner. He had always thought all beings are creations of God and are equal. After sometime he could not hold himself so he intervened in the matter as an ordinary citizen of the planet.

    ‘What is the argument about and why are you both fighting tooth and nail.’ Asked the tortoise.

    ‘Because this stupid bird is not ready to accept the great and deadly qualities of a snake. Snakes are the most grounded beings on earth.’

    ‘And birds are the most intelligent and knowledgeable beings because they fly to so many places and see so many events which the snake is not ready to accept. Snakes spend all their lives in their holes.’

    ‘Can I say something?’ The tortoise looked at both of them. One up on the tree and the other on the ground.

    ‘Birds are God’s emissary in the sky and snakes are God’s emissary under the ground. But sadly you both are unaware of each other’s role in the God’s scheme of things because you both live in your own world. If a bird is asked to go under the ground it won’t be able to do so, in the same manner if the snake is asked to fly it won’t be able to do so. Every being on this planet is a creation of God with a specific purpose.’

    ‘Then what is your purpose?’ Interrupted the angry bird perched on the tree which the snake seconded.

    ‘Well my purpose is to remind you of your purpose, which both of you, have forgotten.’ said the tortoise and then added.  ‘Look at me. I can neither fly nor can I go deep under the ground, as the snake can, yet I consider myself to be a God’s emissary in the planet.’

Upon hearing this the bird took to the sky and the snake glided away.

    Moral of the story: We often draw our own conclusions about others usefulness, without realizing, the actual usefulness of that person, and also, the actual uselessness of ourselves.

The Tortoise and The Geese

    Once upon a time there lived besides a lake a tortoise and two geese who were great friends. But as luck would have it the lake was slowly drying up and therefore the geese decided to migrate to a new place. The tortoise also wanted to move with them. But then he couldn’t fly, so he implored the geese to take him along with them. And for this the tortoise really worked hard to convince them. Finally, the geese agreed. They held a stick with their beaks and asked the tortoise to hold the stick with his mouth at the centre and warned him to not open his mouth in order to avoid him letting go off of the stick. The journey thus started.

    But as they flew high, some onlookers thought that the tortoise was kidnapped and commented: “Oh, the poor tortoise!” This angered the tortoise and he immediately opened his mouth to say something back. As soon as he did, he fell to the ground and died.

    Moral of the story: Think before you speak and listen to the instructions and follow them meticulously.  The story is from Panchatantra

    Once upon a time, there lived a stork beside a pond, who used to catch fish from the pond and eat them. This carried on for a long time and he was having a merry time. But soon he started realising that he is growing old and it was becoming a little difficult for him to catch even a single fish. This started worrying him. Soon, he thought of a plan. He told the fish, frogs, and the crabs in the pond that some men were planning to fill the pond with soil to grow crops and soon there won’t be any fish left in the pond. He also told them how sad he felt about this and that he will miss them all. Upon hearing this the fish too were saddened and requested the stork to help them. The stork promised to take all of them to a bigger pond. However, he said, ‘since I am old, I can take only a few of you at a time.’ But the stork had devious designs. Every time he was hungry he would take a few fish to a rock nearby, kill them and eat them up. 

    In the same pond there also lived a crab, He also wanted to go to the bigger pond. So one day he requested the stork. The stork thought of eating the crab for a change and agreed to help him out. On the way, the crab asked the stork, “Where is the big pond?” The stork laughed and pointed at the rock, which was scattered with fish bones. The crab suddenly realised that the stork would kill him too. He quickly thought of a plan to save himself and he caught the stork’s neck and did not let it go until the stork died.

Moral of The Story: Always have a presence of mind and act quickly when in danger.

The Monkey and The Crocodile

    Once upon a time, in a forest, there lived a monkey who resided on a jamoon (berry) tree, which was on the banks of a river. In the same forest, there lived a crocodile and his wife. One day the crocodile came to the banks of the river and rested under the tree. The kind-hearted monkey offered him some fruits. The crocodile came back the next day for more fruits as he loved them. As days passed by, the crocodile and the monkey became good friends.

    One day the monkey sent some fruits for the crocodile’s wife. She ate the fruits and liked them. But became jealous as she didn’t like her husband spending time with the monkey. She told her husband, “If the fruits are so juicy, I wonder how sweet the monkey’s heart would be. Get me the heart of the monkey.” The crocodile was not willing to kill his friend but had no choice.

    He invited the monkey to his house for dinner and said that his wife would like to meet him. The monkey was happy but couldn’t swim, so the crocodile took him on his back. The crocodile was happy that he had tricked the monkey, however, while talking he blurted out the real reason for taking the monkey home. The clever monkey said, “You should have told me earlier, I left my heart on the tree. We must go back and get it.” The crocodile believed and took him back to the tree. The clever monkey saved his life.

Moral of The Story: Choose your company wisely and always have a presence of mind.

PANCHTANTRA

    Panchatantra moral stories are one of the most popular collections of animal-based fables. Originally written in Sanskrit, where, each of these fables have a concomitant moral. These stories are simple to understand. They are colourful and appropriate even for tiny tots and provide valuable lessons that stay in the mind … forever.

    The legend about the origin of Panchatantra goes back to times of King Amarashakti. Who had appointed a scholar by the name of Vishnu Sharma to educate his three sons. Vishnu Sharma soon realized that conventional tools and techniques of teaching will not work well with these princes, so he decided to teach them through stories instead. He, therefore, wrote a collection of stories under the following five volumes, and so it was named as Panchatantra (‘pancha’ – five and ‘tantra’ – systems).

  • Mitra labha (gaining friends)– Collection of stories relating to winning of friends.
  • Mitra bheda (losing friends)– Collection of stories relating to losing friends.
  • Aparïksitakárakam (acting without thinking) – Collection of stories relating to how imprudence leads to losing what is important.
  • Labdhapranásam (Loss of gains)– Collection of stories that mention how to come out of difficult situations without losing things.
  • Kákolùkïyam (Crows and owls)– Collection of stories about rules and strategies of war and peace.

The Panchatantra was translated into many languages, including English, Indian vernacular languages, Persian and Arabic.
