SHORT STORY: ‘WHY WE SHOUT IN ANGER’

Copyright@shravancharitymission

A saint who was visiting river Ganges to take bath found a group of family members on the banks, shouting in anger at each other. He turned to his disciples smiled and asked.

‘Why do people in anger shout at each other?’

Disciples, thought for a while, when one of them said, ‘Because we lose our calm, we shout.’

‘But, why should you shout when the other person is just next to you? You can as well tell him what you have to say in a soft manner.’ asked the saint

Confused the disciples gave different answers but none of the answers satisfied the Saint.
Finally, the saint explained to his disciples:

‘When two people are angry at each other, their hearts distance themselves. And to cover the distance they have to shout, to be able to hear each other. The angrier they are, the louder they will have to shout to hear each other to cover the distance.

But what happens when two people fall in love? They don’t shout at each other but talk softly, because their hearts are very close. The distance between them is either non-existent or very small.’

The saint further continued. ‘When they love each other even more, what happens? They do not speak. They only whisper and get closer to each other in their love. Finally, they need not even whisper, they only look at each other and that’s all. That is, how close, two people are when they love each other.’

Then the Saint looked at his disciples and said.

‘So when you argue do not let your hearts get distant. Do not say words that distance each other. Or else, there will come a day when the distance will be so great that you will not find the path to return.’

POEM: RIGHT OR WRONG

I was right and he was wrong,

And that brought about the storm,

No! she was wrong and I was right,

And that brought about the enduring strife.

*

In the race of life,

I always made my wrong look like right,

And, his right look wrong.

But all that required,

 A lot of treacherous brainstorm.

*

For no one could realize,

 In the rhythm of life,

Right and wrong,

Were only the two sides of the golden coin.

*

And what mattered in the cruise of life,

Was, the proud possession of the coin,

And, not the two deadly sides,

In the spiral of right and wrong.

*

And as my life meandered along,

There came a day when I turned blind,

Is when I lost the coin,

And what was left with me,

Were only the two sides without the coin,

My right and his wrong.

*

I then realized,

In the speed and greed of life,

When my wrongs outweighed my rights,

God took away whatever I liked.

*

And when I began entering my twilight,

I painstakingly realised,

Neither was right and neither was wrong,

As it was only a lethal battle of ego, rage and the storm.

*

Then sadly one day,

The ego eclipsed,

Storm vanished,

Rage retired,

As my partner expired.

*

And that made me realise,

He too was right,

And I too was wrong,

And that had brought about the blazing storm,

But by then it was too late for a new dawn.

Man is born with zero balance of ego but during the journey of life he accumulates ego like no one’s business. That happens to be the main reason for most clashes that doesn’t even spare loving couples.

POETRY: EGO

EGO

I was right and he was wrong,

And that brought about the ferocious storm,

For in this alluring life,

Only I was in the boil and he in the warmth.

*

I was right and she was wrong,

And that brought about the nagging storm,

For in this fascinating life,

I suffered while she rejoiced.

*

Mind says, I was always right and the other wrong,

Heart says I was ever right and the other wrong,

Where ego hides between the mind and heart,

To play its blaring song.

*

In the pantomime of life,

No pantomime remained,

For half was snatched and half was surrendered,

To the ego of minds.

*

Till one day when I realised in the wake of life,

Only tall egos remained,

Virtues refrained,

And happiness was in vain.

*

For in the framework of a lifetime,

Ego reigned under the spell of legerdemain,

While humility abstained.

*

And by the time I could attain,

The bliss of sane,

It was too late,

For the other had left to gain.

*

Leaving me to my big fat ego,

At the inveterate crux of my domain.
