Madan Lal Dhingra (18 February 1883 — 17 August 1909) was an Indian revolutionary, pro-independence activist. While studying in England, he assassinated William Hutt Curzon Wyllie, a British official.

Early life

    Madan Lal Dhingra was born on 18 February 1883 in Amritsar, India, in an educated and affluent Punjabi Hindu Arora family. His father, Dr. Ditta Mal Dhingra, was a civil surgeon. Madan Lal was one of seven children (six sons and one daughter). All six sons, including Dhingra, studied abroad.

    Dhingra, initially studied at Amritsar in MB Intermediate College until 1900. He then went to Lahore to study at the Government College University. Here, he was influenced by the incipient nationalist movement, which at that time was about seeking Home Rule rather than independence. Dhingra was especially troubled by the poverty in India. He studied the causes of Indian poverty and famines extensively, and felt that the key issues in seeking solutions to these problems lay in Swaraj (self-government) and Swadeshi. He found that the industrial and finance policies of the colonial government were designed to suppress local industry and favour the purchase of British imports, which he felt was a major reason for the lack of economic development in India. Dhingra embraced with fervour the Swadeshi Movement, which was about encouraging Indian industry and entrepreneurship while boycotting British (and other foreign) goods.

    In 1904, as a student in the Master of Arts, Dhingra led a student protest against the principal’s order to have the college blazer made of cloth imported from Britain. He was expelled from the college for this. His father, who held a high, well-paying position in the government had a poor opinion about the agitationists. He told Madan Lal to apologise to the college management, and not participate in such activities again, and prevent his expulsion. Dhingra refused, and chose not to go home to discuss matters with his father, but to take up a job and live as per his own wishes.

    Thus, following his expulsion, Dhingra took a job as a clerk at Kalka at the foot of the Shimla hills, in a firm that ran a Tonga carriage service to transport British families to Shimla for the summer months. But he was dismissed there for insubordination, he then worked as a factory labourer. Here, he attempted to organise a union, but was sacked for the attempt. He moved to Bombay and worked there for some time, again at low-levels. By now, his family was seriously worried about him, and his elder brother, Dr. Bihari Lal, compelled him to go to Britain to continue his higher education. Dhingra finally agreed, and in 1906, he departed for Britain to enroll at University College, London, to study Mechanical Engineering. His elder brother paid for his expenses.

With Savarkar

    Dhingra arrived in London a year after the foundation of Shyamaji Krishna Varma’s India House in 1905. This organisation was a meeting place for Indian revolutionaries located in Highgate. Dhingra came in contact with noted Indian independence and political activists Vinayak Damodar Savarkar and Shyamji Krishna Varma, who were impressed by his perseverance and patriotism that turned Dhingra’s focus to the independence movement. Savarkar believed in a revolution and inspired Dhingra’s admiration in the cult of assassination. Later, Dhingra stayed away from India House and was known to frequent a shooting range on Tottenham Court Road. Later he joined Abhinav Bharat Mandal, a secretive society, founded by Savarkar and his brother Ganesh.

    During this period, Savarkar, Dhingra, and other student activists were outraged by the 1905 Partition of Bengal. Dhingra was disowned for his political activities by his father Gitta Mall, who was the Chief Medical Officer in Amritsar, who published his decision in the newspapers.

Curzon Wyllie’s assassination

    Several weeks before assassinating Curzon Wyllie, Dhingra had tried to kill George Curzon, Viceroy of India. He had also planned to assassinate the ex-Governor of Bengal, Bampfylde Fuller, but was late for the meeting the two were to attend and could not carry out his plan. Dhingra then decided to kill Curzon Wyllie. Curzon Wylie had joined the British Army in 1866 and the Indian Political Department in 1879. He had earned distinction in a number of locations including Central India and above all in Rajputana where he rose to the highest rank in the Service. In 1901 he was selected to be Political Aide-de-Camp to the Secretary of State for India. He was also the head of the Secret Police and had been trying to obtain information about Savarkar and his fellow revolutionaries. Curzon Wyllie was said to have been a close friend of Dhingra’s father.

    On the evening of 1 July 1909, Dhingra, along with a large number of Indians and Englishmen had gathered to attend the annual ‘At Home’ function hosted by the Indian National Association at the Imperial Institute. When Sir Curzon Wyllie, political aide-de-camp to the Secretary of State for India, was leaving the hall with his wife, Dhingra fired five shots right at his face, four of which hit their target. Cawas Lalcaca (or Lalkaka), a Parsi doctor who tried to save Sir Curzon, died of Dhingra’s sixth and seventh bullets, which he fired because Lalcaca had come between them.

    Dhingra’s suicide attempt failed and he was overpowered. He was arrested immediately by the police.

Trial

    Dhingra was tried in the Old Bailey on 23 July. He represented himself during his trial but did not recognize the legitimacy of the court. He stated that the assassination was done in the name of Indian independence and that his actions were motivated by patriotism. He also stated that he had not intended to kill Cawas Lalcaca. He was sentenced to death. After the judge announced his verdict, Dhingra is said to have said: “I am proud to have the honour of laying down my life for my country. But remember, we shall have our time in the days to come.” Madan Lal Dhingra was hanged on 17 August 1909 at Pentonville Prison. He also made a further statement, which is rarely mentioned.

Statement of Dhingra before Pronouncement of Verdict

    “I do not want to say anything in defence of myself, but simply to prove the justice of my deed. As for myself, no English law court has got any authority to arrest and detain me in prison, or pass sentence of death on me. That is the reason I did not have any counsel to defend me. I maintain that if it is patriotic for an Englishman to fight against the Germans if they were to occupy this country, it is much more justifiable and patriotic in my case to fight against the English. I hold the English people responsible for the murder of 80 million Indian people in the last fifty years, and they are also responsible for taking away £100,000,000 every year from India to this country. I also hold them responsible for the hanging and deportation of my patriotic countrymen, who did just the same as the English people here are advising their countrymen to do.

And the Englishman who goes out to India and gets, say, £100 a month, that simply means that he passes a sentence of death on a thousand of my poor countrymen, because these thousand people could easily live on this £100, which the Englishman spends mostly on his frivolities and pleasures. Just as the Germans have no right to occupy this country, so the English people have no right to occupy India, and it is perfectly justifiable on our part to kill the Englishman who is polluting our sacred land.

    While he was being removed from the court, he said to the Chief Justice – “Thank you, my Lord. I don’t care. I am proud to have the honour of laying down my life for the cause of my motherland.”

    After Dhingra went to the gallows, The Times of London wrote an editorial (24 July 1909) titled “Conviction of Dhingra”. The editorial said, “The nonchalance displayed by the assassin was of a character which is happily unusual in such trials in this country. He asked no questions. He maintained a defiance of studied indifference. He walked smiling from the Dock.”

    A stamp was released on Madan Lal Dhingra in 1992 by Government of India. After his execution, Dhingra’s body was denied Hindu rites and buried by the British authorities. His family having disowned him, the authorities refused to turn over the body to Savarkar. Dhingra’s coffin was accidentally found while authorities searched for the remains of Shaheed Udham Singh, and repatriated to India on 12 December 1976. His remains are kept in one of the main squares, which has been named after him, in the city of Akola in Maharashtra. Dhingra is widely remembered in India today, and was an inspiration at the time for revolutionaries such as Bhagat Singh and Chandrasekhar Azad.

SHORT STORY: Alexander the Great

What is happiness? Can it be summarized on a formula? Let me refer the historic meeting between Alexander, the great Macedonian conqueror and the scantily clad Greek philosopher, Diogenes, who lived in a large ceramic jar on the streets of Sinope and thought nothing bad of begging for food and defecating in public.

    Happiness, for Alexander, was all about relishing the best of food, clothing, wealth and ever increasing power. Diogenes, on the other hand, believed that happiness is attained by leading a life of simplicity, free from the constant struggle, for wealth and power.

    When Alexander went to meet Diogenes, to offer him good food, wealth and accommodation, the wise man snapped back to everyone’s astonishment, ‘Move over! I am enjoying the sunshine. Don’t block it with your shadow!’

    The shattered prince was later heard saying, ‘If I were not Alexander, I would be happy to be Diogenes!’ It was apparent that Alexander was in search of happiness.

    Years later, at 32, on his death bed Alexander is said to have made three dying wishes of which the second is the most thought provoking and that was. ‘When my coffin is being carried to the grave, let the entire path leading to the graveyard be strewn with all the wealth of gems and precious stones that I have conquered and collected. Let the world know that I cannot take even a farthing with me. Ultimately, all these precious stones will turn into dust someday just like my body.’

    All our lives we keep running after silver, gold and diamond but the real happiness lies somewhere else which Alexander the Great learnt from Diogenes.

BOOK REVIEW: ASURA–Tale of the Vanquished- The Story of Ravana and his people narrated by Anand Neelakantan

    A mythic fiction. This book was published in the year 2012 by Platinum Press and the page count of this book is 504.

    Asura broke into the top seller charts within a week of its launch. It became the number one bestseller of 2012 as per Crossword list and CNN IBN. It was also nominated for Crossword’s Popular Award in 2013. The book has since been published in many Indian languages.

    Says Ravana: “For thousands of years, I have been vilified and my death is celebrated year after year in every corner of India. Why? Was it because I challenged the Gods for the sake of my daughter? Was it because I freed a race from the yoke of caste-based Deva rule? You have heard the victor’s tale, the Ramayana. Now hear the Ravanayana, for I am the Asura.”

    ‘Juxtaposed between the view point of the defeated Asura emperor and a common citizen of the Asura Empire, this novel gives an entirely fresh and new perspective to our age-old epic. It is the tale of the defeated and silenced. A different view point—says Deccan Chronicle.

    The book attempts to highlight the voice of the vanquished as opposed to the victor’s version of Ramayana that is commonly read and known. It explores the struggle of Ravana and his life that made him what he was, and attempts, to create a link between the social construct, as it may have existed, and varied, at the time, and the well-known instances described in the legend of Ramayana as it is known today.

    It is quite a marathon novel running over some sixty five chapters. We all, in our lives consider Ravana to be one of the biggest villains on earth. The novel gives a counter viewpoint on that. It tells us the hidden aspect of Ravana. The author has used freely creative liberties considering the era it covers.

    The story of the Ramayana has been told innumerable times that covers the enthralling story of Rama, the incarnation of God, who slew Ravana, the evil demon of darkness, and is well known to every Indian. And in the pages of history, as always, it is the version told by the victors that goes on to live. The voice of the vanquished remains lost in silence. But what if Ravana and his people had a different story to tell?

    The story of the Ravanayana has never been told. Asura is the epic tale of the vanquished Asura people, a story that has been cherished by the oppressed outcastes of India for 3000 years. Until now, no Asura has dared to tell the tale. But perhaps the time has come for the dead and the defeated to speak.

    Says Ravana, “I am a non-entity—invisible, powerless and negligible. No epics will ever be written about me. I have suffered both Ravana and Rama—the hero and the villain or the villain and the hero. When the stories of great men are told, my voice maybe too feeble to be heard. Yet, spare me a moment and hear my story, for I am Bhadra, the Asura, and my life is the tale of the loser.”

    The ancient Asura Empire lay shattered into many warring petty kingdoms reeling under the heel of the Devas. In desperation, the Asuras look up to a young saviour—Ravana. Believing that a better world awaits them under Ravana, common men like Bhadra decide to follow the young leader. With will of iron and a fiery ambition to succeed, Ravana leads his people from victory to victory and carves out a vast empire from the Devas. But even when Ravana succeeds spectacularly, the poor Asuras find that nothing much has changed for them. It is then that Ravana, by one action, changes the history of the world.

    The author has used his creativity to the hilt. He has given a modern perspective to the geography of those times and how wars were fought, how a race lived and fought for survival. The language is by and large lucid. A broad spine book of over five hundred pages. The author had much to say I guess. I would give the book five stars a must read.

Short Story from Panchatantra: The Blue Fox

    Once there was a fox who fell into a tub of indigo ie. dark blue dye, while being chased out of a washerman’s house, where he was trying to steal food. Back in the jungle, he realised that, other animals, had failed to recognise him in his indigo coated fur and thought that he was something unique, and hence a superior animal. The Blue Fox was quick to take advantage of the situation. He pretended that he was sent from heaven with a mandate to rule the roost. Soon, his life became grand. Residents of the jungle, including the lion and the tiger started bringing food for him. Elephants stood guard. He had the right of way to the waterhole. Then came the day, when the blue fox heard the joyful howling of his herd of fox and just couldn’t stop himself, from joining it. Exposed, he was chased out of the jungle.

    Moral of the story: It is not possible to lead your entire life pretending to be someone that you are not. Truth has a unique ways of making its presence felt.

    From influencing the weather patterns in the continent to being a major source of water, and hosting, a variety of flora and fauna, the Alps plays a significant role in the natural environment of the region. The Alps are the highest and most extensive mountain range system that lies entirely in Europe.

    Located completely in the continent of Europe, the Alps mountain range, stretches, approximately 1200 km (750 miles) across eight Alpine countries from the west to the east ie. France, Switzerland, Monaco, Italy, Liechtenstein—a German-speaking 25km-long principality between Austria and Switzerland, Austria, Germany and Slovenia. Little known Slovenia is a country in Central Europe. It is known for its mountains, ski resorts and lakes. Though the Alps stretches across several countries from France to Albania, Switzerland and Austria are considered the Alpine heartland. The word Alpine suggests or insinuates ‘of the Alps.’  At its widest, the Alps is spread more than 200 km, making the total area of the region nearly 2,00,000 sq. km. Given its vastness, a minimum of 75 summits in the region are believed to be 4,000 mts above sea level. The Alps is very crucial to Europe due to several reasons such as the source of water for drinking, irrigation, and hydroelectric power. The Alps is marked by varied mountain elevations, giving rise to diverse and contrasting natural topography and climate. Given that this range is also a source of many European rivers, it has a significant role to play in the continent’s natural environment.

    Nearly 35% of Europe’s plant species can be found in the Alps, with more than 300 of them endemic to the region. This is indicative of a healthy and diverse ecosystem rich in not just plant life but also animal life. Despite the landscapes experiencing extreme weather, the Alps nurtures a wide variety of wildlife. Nearly 30,000 wild species are said to have been identified in the region, out of which over 50% are invertebrates. More than a dozen species of reptiles and amphibians each can be found in the region, in addition to over 75 species each of mammals and fish. Also, the region welcomes nearly 200 varieties of nesting birds. Some of the most prominent species in the area are red deer, fox, bear, chamois—an agile goat-antelope with short hooked horns, ibex—a wild mountain goat with long, thick ridged horns and a beard), wild sheep, bear, wolf, lynx—a wild cat, mountain hare, and marmot—a heavily built rodent. Birds such as golden eagle, bearded vultures, ptarmigan—a medium to large game bird with a plump body and feathered legs, and black grouse—another variety of a game bird are also found in the region.

    The earliest travellers to the Alps are said to have been drawn to its pristine beauty. But, time and again, it has been proven that human presence invariably has a negative impact on any region. And the signs of this was first visible around the mid-20th century in the Alps. As more and more people visited Alps, its degradation began. Pollution of air and water, and tangible noise pollution too are said to have been increasing since. There is also been a spike in the amount of biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste in the region, affecting both the local people and the flora and fauna. Further, the setting up of resorts, roads, and skiing slopes, have increased the frequency of slope erosion. Not just that, such constructions also cause fragmentation of habitats for the wildlife. Also with increase in population, forests and riparian lands are turned into agricultural lands or residential areas. This alters waterways, changing the natural environment of the region, affecting both humans and wildlife. Most importantly, global warming has been particularly impacting mountain ranges worldwide, and it is no different in the Alps. Changes in the patterns of rain and snow have been observed, and extreme weather events such as floods and avalanches have shown frequencies and intensities not witnessed earlier.  

    The Alpine region has a strong cultural identity. The traditional culture of farming, cheese-making, and woodworking still exists in Alpine villages, although the tourist industry began to grow early in the 20th century and expanded greatly after World War II to become the dominant industry by the end of the century. The Winter Olympic Games have been hosted in the Swiss, French, Italian, Austrian and German Alps. At present, the region is home to 14 million people and has 120 million annual visitors.

SHORT STORY: ARE ANIMALS BETTER TEACHERS?

    Once in a literary congregation a king and his ministers wanted to know who is a better teacher, man or animal. The scholars who had assembled there agreed that, ‘Man is a better teacher than animals.’

    The king then asked the scholars, ‘What have you taught the animals that you have so much airs about yourselves?

    ‘Well … your Majesty animals are duffers. They refuse to learn anything from we … human beings.’

    ‘So does it mean that animals are duffers, or does it mean that man is a duffer, who is unable to teach them anything? And what have you learnt from the animals?’ The king placed a smart rejoinder.

    One scholar got up and said, ‘Your Majesty we have learnt nothing from animals we are self-made.’

    ‘Then from whom did man learn flying?’ Asked the king. The gathering of scholars went quiet. The king repeated his question. One scholar broke his silence and said. ‘From the birds.’

    ‘Who taught the man to swim?’ Asked, the minister, who was giving the king, company. Another scholar got up and said, ‘Fish.’

    ‘And, who taught man cunningness?’ Asked another minister.

    A young scholar replied, ‘Fox.’

   ‘And what about ferociousness?’ This time it was the king himself.

    Another scholar replied, ‘Tiger.’

    ‘What about Gymnastics?’ It was the king again. ‘Monkey.’ Replied a senior scholar.

    ‘And what about sprinting?’ Enquired the king as he hadn’t given up yet. The scholars pondered for a moment, and then, one scholar said, ‘Cheetah.’ And another one said, ‘Antelope.’

    ‘What about sting?’ Asked the Prime Minister who was quiet till now.

   ‘Obviously the bee and even the scorpion.’ Replied the head of the scholars.

    ‘And who taught man how to cross the desert? It was the Prime Minister again.

    “The Camel.’ Replied another scholar who was hitherto quiet.

    ‘So even after learning so many things from the animals you call yourself self-made, and in return, what have you taught them, or was it that the animals found nothing worth in a man to learn from.’ Retorted the king. There was pin drop silence when the youngest scholar out of the lot got up and said,

    ‘Your Majesty animals aren’t good teachers, it is only the man who is a smart learner.’

    ‘So then, let’s summarize. Man is both a good teacher and a learner, but animals on the contrary, are neither good teachers nor learners.’ Ridiculed the king.

    ‘Yes your Majesty.’ Dared the youngest scholar.

    ‘Then why didn’t you learn the virtues of a cow if you were a smart learner?’ Queried the king.

    ‘Because, the need for that was never felt as man could do without virtues your majesty.’ Replied the eldest scholar.

    Moral of the story: Man has an inflated ego. He doesn’t want to accept that animals are good teachers, nor does he want to accept that animals are good learners, nor does the man want to accept that he is a bad teacher. Man is just man and will remain a man a unique species on earth.

–Read Initiative—

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

    The title ‘Billionaire Cabbie’ is by a first time author Balbir Singh Sethi. Balbir, is an ex-student of REC/NIT Srinagar. He has had his long innings as an Engineer, that later turned him, into an Exporter. Since then he has retired and given the reigns to his son. In a span of 74 years, he has gone through many ups and downs. The book is an outcome of an episode that he witnessed during his travel to Jaipur, where he chanced to see a lady, necking a taxi driver. The taxi was ahead of his car and that was the spark for writing his first book, says the author.

    The beginning of the book has a customary caution note that the book is a fiction and has no bearing with any person dead or alive. But to me, it appears as someone’s long fairy-tale of success, written as fiction.

    ‘The main protagonist Bobby loses his father in the final year of his school. His dreams are big and he accomplishes his dreams with sheer determination, hard work, and honesty. He meets Ruksana in his journey and she becomes his wife in real life. Bobby amasses wealth but loses his ladylove in between. This makes him amass more wealth until he realizes one day that he has had enough of it. He then decides to see life from ground zero, and starts driving a cab incognito.’ The back cover of the book stops here, and so will I, as I don’t want to be a spoiler since the book has been published only recently. The publisher is Notion Press. The price of the book is Rs 150, and is available, in all online stores.

    There is no preface to the book which I feel is a must as you do get an overview of the plot with a preface. You also get the main reasons for the author to write the book, the central theme the underlined message that the book carries till the end, that ultimately impacts the reader. And the author is best suited to write his own preface which he hasn’t done here. The preface makes the reading of the book even more interesting as you’re modestly aware of the turf that you’re treading and what to look for, in the book. Preface is something like a movie’s trailer or a preview.

    I found the book to be quite a Bhanumati-ka-pitara, a mixed bag. It has tragedy, a determined struggle, towering success, necking and sex in abundance that could have been refined or toned down, in fact, in certain pages, one gets to feel as if, too much sex is eating into the plot, and you’re in for a surprise, considering, the age of the author which is 74 in lighter vein. Then it has that sleazy link between politicians and businessmen, the highs and lows of the stock market, death, crime, kidnapping, and chief protagonist Bobby’s attempt to see the world as a cabby. It is a yester-year story written in the backdrop of Bombay now Mumbai. The story after the initial tragedy appears too good to be true till half the spine, and only brings about, the vicissitudes of life, thereafter. The book takes off only after the first hundred pages. The build-up of Bobby’s character wanes in the second half of the book.

    The author has delved deep into minute details, at times irrelevant, and has used lucid English, and largely, short sentences, being his debut novel. The author could have avoided using the same words in quick succession to keep the freshness of the flow of language. As an inveterate reader one does get the feel as if, it’s the author’s own veiled account. His description of Srinagar is excellent having done his engineering from there. Hopefully the author will bring in refinement of tone and tenor in his second book.

    The book is not very meaty and delivers in a little over two hundred pages. Well if you’re a college student or just into your career you’ll enjoy reading about the young lad Bobby who without any Ivy-league qualification goes up the ladder in his career starting with grunt work.

    Since it’s a debut book written by a seventy four year old author, I admire his spirits, and would give the book seven out of ten as a college student. Best of luck for his second title.

SHORT STORY: HALF A BABY

    Once a tortoise and a bird were fishing for food when both gave birth to baby boys. A few days later the bird had some important work and requested the tortoise to look after her son. The tortoise readily agreed.

    As days passed the tortoise started believing that her son was uglier than the bird’s son, and she decided to swap the two boys.

    When the bird returned she saw the tortoise’s son lying in her bed and her son lying in tortoise’s bed. She asked the tortoise, ‘Why did you put your son in my bed and my son in your bed?’

   The tortoise retorted, ‘How dare you ask me this question?’

    The bird felt hurt and went looking for the tiger, the king of the jungle. Upon finding the tiger she narrated what had happened.  

   The tiger said, ‘I’ll definitely help you. Come let’s go,’ and the two set off.

    When they reached the home of the tortoise and the bird, the tiger asked the tortoise, ‘Which is your baby?’ The tortoise pointed at the baby bird in her bed.

   The bird said, ‘No-no, that’s my baby.’ Post which they started quarrelling.

    The tiger interrupted with a growl. ‘I don’t know whom to believe. Give the baby to me. I’ll cut it into two, and give you each, half a baby.’

    The tortoise nodded in agreement. But the bird pleaded, ‘No-no don’t cut the baby. If you don’t know who the mother is, please give this baby to the tortoise.’

   The tiger smiled. He took the baby bird from the tortoise’s bed, and gave it to the bird, telling the tortoise, ‘No mother would agree to cut her baby into half.

INTERESTING FACTS: PADMAVYUHA & CHAKRAVYUHA

    Padmavyuha and Chakravyuha are strategies and tactics of war. What we in Hindi call Padmavyuha or Chakravyuha is a military formation used to surround enemies, depicted in the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It resembles a labyrinth of multiple defensive walls.

    Ancient Indians had perfected the art of arraying, displaying, arranging, and lining of troops, called the ‘vyuha.’ In the Rig Veda, there are many references to substantiate this. A war hymn says that Maruts (ie soldiers) moved in linear formation like birds. Another hymn says, they assumed the shape of a man, a horse, or a pigeon at different times. There are references to battle formations in the Sama Veda, Yajur Veda and Atharva Veda.

    The Mahabharata has the most detailed description of the ‘vyuhas’ (ie. the battle arrays). Two great acharyas—Shukra and Brahaspati—had propounded many of these vyuhas. During the eighteen day war, Pandava and Kaurava commanders formed as many as thirty vyuhas, including Vajra, Krauncaruna, Ardhacandra, Syena, Makara, Garuda, Vyala, Sakata, Cakra, Suci, etc. While deciding to form a particular vyuha, they considered their own objective, and the deployment of the enemy’s forces.

    On the 13th day of the Mahabharata war, the Kaurava commander deployed his army in ‘Chakravyuha’ to trap and kill the Pandava commander ‘Abhimanyu.’ On the fourteenth day of war, the Kauravas combined Cakra-Sakata-Padma and Suci vyuhas to repel and beat the attack launched by Arjuna. There are references to vyuhas in the Ramayana and the Buddhist Jatakas (Buddhist literature) also.

    Vyuhas are described in far greater detail in the Arthashastra. In the sama-vyuha (even array) the five constituents—centre (ura) two flanks (kaksas) and two wings (paksas) were provided with an equal number of troops. In the visamavyuha (uneven army) the number of troops deployed at the centre, the flanks and the wings were not the same. In misravyuha (mixed array), the chariot, elephants, horses and foot soldiers were deployed together at the centre, and at the flanks and wings, while in suddhavyuha (unmixed array) only one of these arms was deployed.

    This four-fold classification of the vyuhas relates to the strategic deployment of various arms. But the most significant contribution of the Arthashastra relates to the tactical deployment of units, according to the code of Brahaspati. Kautilya has classified the tactical deployment of troops in four basic arrays, namely danda-vyuha (staff array), bhoga-vyuha (snake array), mandala-vyuha (circle array) and asamhata-vyuha (diffused array). Each of these types had many variations, as danda alone, could be formed in seventeen ways, bhoga in four ways, and both mandala and asamhata in three ways. Kautilya has also described some miscellaneous arrays.

    It is notable that a detailed description of battle arrays is also available in works such as the Manusmriti, Kamandaka Niti, Agni Purana and Sukraniti. Later works like the Sisupalavadha and Prithiviraja Raso also refer to the use of some of these vyuhas.

    Chakravyahu is something that we even use in terms of strategy in our day to day lives.
