SHORT STORY: THE INTELLIGENT JACKAL

Copyright@shravancharitymission

There was once a ferocious lion who lived in a dense jungle.  One day, he could not prey upon a single animal in spite of wandering around in search of food the whole day. It was almost sunset, and the lion started returning, even when, he was very hungry. On his way back, he saw a big cave, and thought to himself, “For sure some animal must be living in this big cave. Such a nice cave cannot be empty, someone has to be there. At sunset, which ever animal lives here, is bound to return. So, I shall hide myself inside the cave and wait for my dinner to arrive.”
The cave was home to a jackal, who arrived, a little while after the lion had hidden himself inside. But while entering he noticed the footprints of the lion leading into the cave, but could not find any footprint coming out.

He thought, “If a lion has indeed entered the cave, I will be dead as soon as I enter. But, how can I, be sure? There is no reason for me to stay away from my home if there is no lion inside. I must find out a way to confirm if the lion is still inside.”

The jackal thought of a plan, and while standing in front of the cave, began to shout, “Hello Cave! Hello Cave! Can I come inside?” For a few moments, he waited in silence and shouted again, “Hello Cave! Have you forgotten our understanding of all these years? I always wait for your reply before I enter. Why are you silent today? I shall then go to some other cave if you do not reply.”
Upon hearing this, the lion thought, “The cave must reply to the jackal when he returns at sunset. It is, because I am inside, the cave is not replying today. So, I must invite the jackal on behalf of the cave, or the jackal will go away.”
So, the lion replied from inside the cave, “Hello Jackal, you may enter. It is safe inside.” But the reply was frightening due to the echo from the walls of the cave. The jackal at once knew that the lion was waiting for him to enter and make a meal out of him. He ran off, as fast as he could to save himself.
Moral of the story: Use your brains to protect yourself from destruction.

SHORT STORY: GURU

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Scriptures say that a ‘jiva atma’ meets a guru only when there is an intense yearning  in him for the same. It is only then that the guru comes to the seeker. A true guru destroys illusion and radiates light. The following story illustrates this very point:

Once there lived a man who developed an intense craving for an embodied guru, but did not know how and where to get one from. So, he started praying earnestly for a guru. He took a vow to abstain from food and other pleasures till a guru came into his life.

In a nearby village lived a sage who went daily into the forest on a standard path, to collect firewood. The sage would be in meditation and the horse would automatically take him to the fixed spot. One day, he opened his eyes to see that his horse had brought him to the door of a hut. Knowing this could be a divine intervention, he dismounted and knocked the door. The seeker of the guru who had taken the vow opened the door, and bowed to the sage with deep reverence. The all-knowing sage initiated him and took him under his spiritual umbrella.

Today, material comforts and conveniences are not guaranteeing peace of mind. There is, widespread despair and alarming degree of collective angst. This is where an enlightened guru can show the path of serenity and salvation to his disciple.

STORY: The Peacock and the Crane

Copyright@shravancharity mission

There was once a peacock who often boasted about his beauty. Every day he would walk up to the banks of a large lake and look at his own reflections and say “Oh! What a beautiful bird I am! Look at my exquisite colourful tail.”

Once the peacock saw a crane on the banks of the lake. He said with sarcasm to the crane, “What a colourless bird you are! You don’t have beautiful and colourful feathers like me—see I’m the most beautiful”.
The crane replied, “O yes of course! I don’t have beautiful feathers. But, my feathers can make me fly across the lake. Can your feathers make you fly?” There was no reply from the peacock.
MORAL OF THE STORY: It is better to be useful than to be beautiful.

STORY: TWO FRIENDS AND THE BEAR

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Vijay and Raju were friends. Once while they were on a holiday they went into a forest. Where, they were enjoying the beauty of nature. When suddenly they saw a bear charging at them. They were frightened. Raju who knew how to climb a tree, ran towards it and climbed it up in no time. He did not think of Vijay who did not know how to climb a tree.

Vijay got nervous and thought for a second. He had heard, animals do not prefer dead bodies. So, he fell on the ground and held his breath. The bear sniffed him for a few moments and thought he was dead and decided to carry on. Upon witnessing the scene Raju asked Vijay. ‘What did the bear whisper in your ears?’

Vijay replied, The bear asked me to keep away from friends like you.’

Moral of the story is: A friend in need is a friend indeed.

STORY: SATAN IN DISGUISE

Copyright@shravancharitymission

There once lived an old tiger in a forest. He could not hunt animals as he used to do when he was young. It was therefore becoming difficult for him, to get his prey. One day the tiger thought, “I have lost the strength and speed of my youth. Unless, I discover some trick to catch my prey, I will starve to death”.

After a serious thought, the tiger came out with a plan. He began by telling everyone, “I am now old. So I have turned into a vegetarian. I have become a sanyasi. I will no more hunt animals.”

Soon his words spread across the jungle. Innocent animals who were otherwise scared of him came to pay their respect to the aged tiger, thinking, that the tiger had turned into a saint. But in reality the tiger pounced on all the animals when they came to his cave.
This information fell in the ears of a fox. The fox began to think, “Can a tiger become a vegetarian, and thereby a saint?” He was now eager to unearth the truth.
Stealthily, the fox approached the tiger’s cave. He minutely and carefully examined the foot prints of the all animals that had gone to meet the tiger. He found to his dismay, all foot prints going towards the cave but not returning from the there. He then told all the animals in the forest. “The tiger is a cheat. So, don’t go to his cave as he has eaten up all the animals that went there”.
The tiger had to starve to death.
MORAL OF THE STORY: Satanic words are not to be believed.

SHORT STORY: LESSON FROM THE DONKEY

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once a washer man was going along with his donkey and a bucket filled with clothes. It was pitch dark. They were walking around a small hillock when the donkey fell into a ditch. After falling in the ditch the donkey went into a shock and could not stand properly and so it started braying (hee-haw-hee-haw).

The washer man who was very attached to his donkey. Could not stand the braying of the donkey. So, he decided to bury it thinking its half dead. He soon started throwing bucket full of mud in the ditch to bury the donkey. But after sometime the washer man was shocked to see the donkey limping out of the ditch slowly and soon he started striding as usual.

What had happened was, whenever, the mud was thrown in by the washerman, the donkey used to shake it off, and the mud became steps for him, and stepping on those steps the donkey came out.

Moral of the story: Don’t get disheartened when people throw muck at you. Just shake it off as that will further strengthen you to go up in life.

SHORT STORY: LESSON FROM THE OAK TREE

Copyright @shravancharitymission

Chinese sage Chaung Tsu narrates the story of a huge old oak tree that was declared worthless by a carpenter because its timber was of bad quality and anything made from it would break, rot or wither away. Subsequently, in the story, the tree told the carpenter that it had turned useless on purpose because it wished to live a natural and happy life. Had its timber been useful it would have been cut into pieces, made into something else and would have been dead long ago. The sage enlightens us further by saying that in trying to be valued, desirable and significant in the eyes of the world, we usually end up relinquishing our deeper essence and we start living artificially. Despite assuming a grandiose form, our life is then fraught with meaninglessness and misery.

Moral of the story: Think of yourself before you think of becoming useful for the world.

SHORT STORY: TEN FOOLS

Copyright@shravancharitymission

We spend a lot of time in knowing about others. But we hardly spend time, in knowing about our own ourselves. The reason is very simple, because we always think we know ourselves inside out. But the reality is quite the reverse.  The story below is a satire on this very thought process.

Once there were ten friends who had embarked upon an adventure. They Crossed rivers, scaled mountains, traversed across forests, and finally they arrived in open fields. When suddenly one screamed. ‘O my God, one of us is missing. We started off as ten and now there are only nine.’ They hurriedly sat in a circle, and  started counting, and then started crying for the missing tenth. Once again, the first counted each one and wailed loudly as he reached the ninth. Number one was on his left and number nine was on his right. Where was the tenth? The second did the same and so did the third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and the ninth … but the tenth was nowhere to be seen. They all kept crying till a wise man pointed out that each one counted everyone, except himself.

The moral of the story is, in this busy and crowded world keep good track of yourself, or you’ll get lost.

SHORT STORY: THE CAVE AND THE LIGHT

Copyright@shravancharitymission

There was once a cave that lived underground as most caves do. The cave had spent its entire life in darkness. It had never seen light. One day, a voice came up to him and said, ‘Come up … into the light. Come up … and enjoy the sunlight.’

‘I don’t know what you mean by light. All I have ever known and seen is darkness.’ The cave replied. ‘Come and see it for yourself,’ said the voice again.

The cave mustered up enough courage and climbed slowly up from the depths of the earth. Suddenly, it reached the top of the earth and was surrounded by magnificent light, the likes of which he had never seen before in its life.

‘This is beautiful,’ said the cave. And after enjoying the light for a while the cave said to the sunlight, ‘Now it is your turn to come with me and see the darkness.’

‘What is darkness?’ Asked the Sunlight. The cave answered, ‘come and see it for yourself.’ The Sunlight decided to visit the cave’s home. And as the Sunlight entered the cave, it said. ‘Now show me where your darkness is.’ But with the Sunlight there was no darkness to be found.

What the anecdote illustrates is the power of light. Wherever there is light there can be no darkness. Whenever we feel we are in the dark spell of our life, we need only to tap into the light of our soul.

SHORT STORY: THE FARMER AND THE WELL

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once a farmer who was looking for a source of water for his farm bought a well from his neighbour. The neighbour was a cunning person. He refused to let the farmer take the water from the well. On asking why, he replied, “I sold the well to you, and not the water.” After saying this he walked away. The distraught farmer didn’t know what to do. So he went to Birbal, a clever man and one of the nine courtiers of Emperor Akbar, for a solution.

The emperor called both the farmer and his neighbour and asked why the man was not letting the farmer draw water from the well. The cunning man said the same thing again, “Your majesty I sold the well, and not the water. So he cannot take my water.” To this, Birbal replied, “All that sounds fine to me. But if you have not sold the water and the water is yours, then you have no business keeping your water in his well. So remove the water or use it up immediately. If not the water will belong to the owner of the well or you may have to pay rent for keeping your water in his well.”

The neighbour realising that he’s been tricked and even taught a lesson, immediately apologized and left.

So the Moral of the story is: Cheating will never get you anywhere. If you cheat, you’ll pay for it soon.  And in Hindi as they say … ser ko sawa ser jaroor milta hai. Birbal was the sawa ser to the cunning neighbour.
