SHORT STORY: ‘CHOICE BETWEEN GOLD COIN AND JUSTICE’

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Just like any other day in King Akbar’s court, one day Akbar asked Birbal, ‘my dear Birbal if I tell you to choose between ‘justice’ and ‘gold coin’ what will you choose? Without ány hesitation Birbal replied, ‘Your Majesty, I will choose a gold coin, without doubt.’ At this, everyone, including king Akbar, was aghast at Birbal’s unexpected and spontaneous reply and thought for a change this time Birbal has fumbled. King Akbar said, ‘I am very disappointed with you Birbal. Why would you choose something of a lesser value, like gold coin, over something, as valuable as justice?’ Birbal replied with a grin on his face, ‘Your Majesty, there is no dearth of justice in your regime, because there is justice everywhere in your kingdom. So, I felt there is no need to ask for something that I have in abundance. But your Majesty … my lord, I’m surely, quite short of money, and a gold coin would be, extremely handy under the circumstances.’ Upon hearing this Akbar was speechless, but he wore a big smile on his face. He felt overjoyed with the reply and rewarded Birbal with 100 gold coins.

Moral of the story: One will always benefit if one chooses’ one’s words, wisely.

Short story: Clever Detective

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once a rich merchant’s house was robbed. The merchant suspected that the thief was one of his servants. So he went to Birbal and mentioned the incident to him. Birbal went to his house and assembled all his servants and asked who stole the merchant’s things. But everybody denied.

Birbal thought for a moment. He then gave them a stick of equal length and said the stick of the real thief will be longer by two inches tomorrow and he will be caught. All the servants should be present here again tomorrow with their sticks.

All the servants went to their homes and gathered again at the same place the next day. Birbal asked them to show him their sticks. One of the servants had his stick shorter by two inches. Birbal said, “This is your thief, merchant.”

Later the merchant asked Birbal, “How could you catch him?” Birbal said, “The thief had already cut his stick short by two inches in the night fearing that his stick will be longer by two inches by morning.” This confirmed that he was the thief.

Moral of the story: Come what may … Truth shall always Prevail.

SHORT STORY: THREE QUESTIONS

Copyright@shravancharitymission

King Akbar was very fond of Birbal. This made a certain courtier very jealous. Now this courtier always wanted to be chief minister, but this was not possible as Birbal filled that position quite adequately and efficiently.  One day Akbar praised Birbal in front of the courtier. This made the courtier very angry and he said that the king praised Birbal unjustly and if Birbal could answer three of his questions, he would accept the fact that Birbal was intelligent enough. Akbar as always wanting to test Birbal’s wit readily agreed to the suggestion.

    The three questions were:

  1. How many stars are there in the sky
  2. Where is the centre of the Earth and
  3. How many men and how many women are there in the world.

Immediately Akbar asked Birbal the three questions and informed him that if he could not answer them, he would have to resign as chief minister.

To answer the first question, Birbal brought a hairy sheep and said, “There are as many stars in the sky as there is hair on the sheep’s body. My friend the courtier is welcome to count them if he likes.”

To answer the second question, Birbal drew a couple of lines on the floor and bore an iron rod in it and said, “this is the center of the Earth, the courtier can measure it himself if he has any doubts.”

To answer the third question, Birbal said, “Counting the exact number of men and women in the world would be a problem as there are some specimens like our courtier friend here who cannot easily be classified as either. Therefore if all people like him are killed, then and only then can one count the exact number.”

Moral of the story: No matter how difficult the question is there is always an answer or a way out.

SHORT STORY: The Power of Observation

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once Birbal was sent to another kingdom as an ambassador. The King, of that kingdom, had heard a lot of stories about Birbal’s sharp intellect and thought of testing the same. So, the King made all his ministers dress up like him, and thereafter, they all sat in a line to test Birbal’s intelligence. When Birbal entered the courtroom to offer his credentials, he was amazed to see everyone dressed in the same clothes and sitting on a similar kind of throne.

Perplexed, Birbal took a moment to observe everyone very keenly, and then went up to one of them and bowed in front of him. It was the King himself, who was surprised beyond words. He stood up and hugged Birbal and asked him how could he guess so?    Birbal smiled and answered, “My lord, you exuded sparkling confidence which no one else did. And not only that the rest of them even kept looking at you for approval. And that gave me the clue that you indeed are the king”. The King felt amused and praised Birbal for his unmatched intellect and presence of mind.

Moral of the story: Intelligent people can comprehend a great deal through observation alone.

SHORT STORY: HUNDRED GOLD COINS AND BIRBAL

Copyright@shravancharitymission

The wisdom of Birbal was unparalleled during the reign of Emperor Akbar. But Akbar’s brother in law was extremely jealous of him. He asked the Emperor to dispense with Birbal’s services and appoint him in his place. He gave ample assurance that he would prove to be more efficient and capable than Birbal. But before Akbar could take a decision on the matter, the news reached Birbal.

Birbal resigned and left. Akbar’s brother in law was thus made the minister in place of Birbal. Akbar decided to test the new minister. He gave three hundred gold coins to him and said, “Spend these gold coins in such a manner that I get a hundred gold coins here in this life; a hundred gold coins in the other world and another hundred gold coins neither here nor there.”

The minister found the entire situation to be a maze of confusion and hopelessness. He spent sleepless nights worrying how he would get himself out of this mess. Thinking in circles was making him go crazy. Eventually, on the advice of his wife, he sought Birbal’s help. Birbal said, “Just give me the gold coins. I shall handle the rest.”

Birbal walked the streets of the city holding the bag of gold coins in his hand. He noticed a rich merchant celebrating his son’s wedding. Birbal gave a hundred gold coins to him and bowed courteously saying, ‘Emperor Akbar sends you his good wishes and blessings for the wedding of your son. Please accept the gift he has sent.’ The merchant felt honoured that the king had sent a special messenger with such a precious gift. He honoured Birbal in return and gave him a large number of expensive gifts and a bag of gold coins as a return gift for the king.

Thereafter, Birbal went to the area of the city where the poor people lived. There he bought food and clothing in exchange for a hundred gold coins and distributed them in the name of the Emperor.

When he came back to town he organized a concert of music and dance. He spent a hundred gold coins on it.

The next day Birbal entered Akbar’s Darbar and announced that he had done all that the king had asked his brother-in-law to do. The Emperor wanted to know what he had done. Birbal repeated the sequence of all the events and then said, ‘The money that I gave to the merchant for the wedding of his son – you have got back while on this earth as return gift. The money I spent on buying food and clothing for the poor – you will get it in the other world. The money I spent on the musical concert – you will get neither here nor there.” Akbar’s brother in law understood his mistake and resigned. Birbal got his place back.

Moral of the story: The money you spend on friends is returned or reciprocated in some form or the other in this life only. The money spent on charity gets converted into blessings from God which will be your eternal property. The money spent on pleasures is just frittered away. So think wisely before you spend your money.

The Crows in The Kingdom

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once on a fine sunny day, king Akbar and Birbal were taking a leisure walk in the palace gardens. Suddenly, king Akbar thought of testing Birbal’s wits by asking him a tricky question. The Emperor asked Birbal, “How many crows are there in our kingdom?” Birbal could sense the amusement in the king’s voice, and within a few minutes Birbal replied, “My lord, there are eighty thousand nine hundred and seventy-one crows in our kingdom”. Surprised and amazed, Akbar further tested Birbal, “What if we have more crows than this?” Without giving much thought, Birbal replied, “Oh, then the crows from the other kingdoms must be visiting us’’. “ What if there are lesser crows, asked Akbar?” “Well, then some of our crows must be visiting other kingdoms”, replied Birbal with a grin on his face. Akbar smiled at Birbal’s great sense of humour and wit.

There is always an answer to any question if one thinks with ease.

SHORT STORY: AKBAR’S DREAM

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once when Emperor Akbar was dreaming. The dream began with Akbar and Birbal walking towards each other on a moonless night.

It was so dark that they could not see each other and they collided and fell.

“Fortunately for me,” said the Emperor. “I fell into a pool of payasam—Kheer. But guess, what Birbal fell into?”
“What, your Majesty?” asked the courtiers.

    “A gutter!”

The court resounded with laughter. The emperor was thrilled that for once he had been able to score over Birbal.

    But Birbal remained unperturbed.

“Your Majesty,” he said when the laughter died down. “Strangely, I too, had the same dream. But unlike you, I kept sleeping till the end. And when, you climbed out of that pool, of delicious payasam—kheer, and I, out of that stinking gutter, we discovered there was no water with which, we could clean ourselves, so guess, what we did?”

    “What?” asked the emperor, cautiously.

    “We licked each other clean!”

The emperor became red with embarrassment and resolved never to try to get the better of Birbal again.

SHORT STORY: BIRBAL AND THE CABBAGE

Copyright@shravancharitymission

One day Akbar and Birbal were riding through the countryside when they happened to pass by a field where cabbage was being grown.

“Cabbage is such a delight. I love cabbage!” explained Akbar.

“Cabbage is the king of all vegetables my lord!” said Birbal.

A few weeks later they were riding past the cabbage field again.

This time however, the emperor made a face when he saw the vegetables. “I used to love cabbage but now I have no taste for it.” said Akbar.

“Cabbage indeed is a tasteless vegetable huzoor.” agreed Birbal.

The emperor was astonished at this remark of Birbal.

“But Birbal, last time you said it was the king of vegetables!” pointed Akbar.

“I did,” admitted Birbal. “But I am your servant Your Majesty, and not of cabbage.”

SHORT STORY: BIRBAL’S KICHADI

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once on a cold winter day, Akbar and Birbal were passing through a lake. Akbar stopped for a moment and put his finger into the freezing water and immediately took it out, saying, “I don’t think anyone can sustain a night in this cold water”. Birbal, took that, as a challenge, and said, that he would find someone who could do that. Akbar promised a sum of 1000 gold coins, to whosoever, who could spend a night, standing in the cold water of the lake. Soon, Birbal found a poor man who agreed to undertake the challenge for the 1000 gold coins. Guarded by two royal guards, the poor man spent the entire night standing in the freezing water.

In the morning, the poor man was taken to court for the reward. Upon being asked by the king how he could stand in the freezing water, the man replied, “My lord, I kept looking at a lamp that was burning at a distance, and spent my entire night looking at it”. On learning this, the emperor said, “This man is not worthy of the reward as he could manage to stand in the lake only because he was getting warmth from the lamp”. The poor man felt doomed and heart-broken, and he reached Birbal for help. Birbal didn’t go to the court the next day. Akbar visited Birbal to find the reason. To his amusement, the king found Birbal sitting beside the fire with a pot hanging almost 6 feet above it. On being enquired, Birbal said, “I am cooking khichadi, my lord”. Akbar started laughing and said that is impossible. Birbal said, “It is possible My Lord—just as the poor man who can stay warm by simply looking at the lamp burning at a distance, I can cook this khichadi in the same manner.” Akbar understood Birbal’s point, and rewarded the poor man for the challenge.

SHORT STORY: THE FARMER AND THE WELL

Copyright@shravancharitymission

Once a farmer who was looking for a source of water for his farm bought a well from his neighbour. The neighbour was a cunning person. He refused to let the farmer take the water from the well. On asking why, he replied, “I sold the well to you, and not the water.” After saying this he walked away. The distraught farmer didn’t know what to do. So he went to Birbal, a clever man and one of the nine courtiers of Emperor Akbar, for a solution.

The emperor called both the farmer and his neighbour and asked why the man was not letting the farmer draw water from the well. The cunning man said the same thing again, “Your majesty I sold the well, and not the water. So he cannot take my water.” To this, Birbal replied, “All that sounds fine to me. But if you have not sold the water and the water is yours, then you have no business keeping your water in his well. So remove the water or use it up immediately. If not the water will belong to the owner of the well or you may have to pay rent for keeping your water in his well.”

The neighbour realising that he’s been tricked and even taught a lesson, immediately apologized and left.

So the Moral of the story is: Cheating will never get you anywhere. If you cheat, you’ll pay for it soon.  And in Hindi as they say … ser ko sawa ser jaroor milta hai. Birbal was the sawa ser to the cunning neighbour.
