Synopsis of Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy

Author: Leo Tolstoy

Original title: Анна Каренина

Published: 1877–1878

Genre: Realist novel, psychological fiction, social drama

Setting: 19th-century Russian aristocratic society

Summary

Anna Karenina is a tragic novel about love, marriage, family, social expectations, and the search for happiness. Through the lives of Anna Karenina and Konstantin Levin, Tolstoy explores the conflict between personal desires and society’s moral standards.

The story begins with a family crisis. Prince Stepan Oblonsky, known as Stiva, has been unfaithful to his wife, Dolly. His sister, Anna Karenina, travels to Moscow to help reconcile the couple. During her visit, Anna meets Count Alexei Vronsky, a handsome and wealthy military officer. Their attraction develops into a passionate love affair.

Anna is already married to Alexei Karenin, a senior government official, and they have a young son, Seryozha. Although her marriage provides security and social respectability, it lacks emotional intimacy. Anna falls deeply in love with Vronsky and eventually leaves her husband to live with him.

However, their relationship brings suffering rather than lasting happiness. Russian aristocratic society condemns Anna for her adultery, while Vronsky faces far less severe consequences. Anna becomes increasingly isolated from her friends and is separated from her beloved son. Karenin struggles between his wounded pride, religious beliefs, and public reputation.

As Anna’s isolation grows, she becomes consumed by jealousy, insecurity, and fear that Vronsky no longer loves her. Their relationship deteriorates under the pressure of social rejection and emotional conflict. Unable to find peace or a secure place in society, Anna throws herself under a train and dies.

Alongside Anna’s tragic story runs the story of Konstantin Levin, a thoughtful landowner who struggles to understand life, work, love, and faith. Levin marries Kitty Shcherbatsky, who had initially hoped to marry Vronsky. Through the difficulties of married life, family responsibilities, agricultural work, and personal doubts, Levin gradually discovers that happiness lies not in wealth or social prestige, but in meaningful relationships, honest work, and spiritual understanding.

The novel ends with Levin finding a renewed sense of purpose in life, while Anna’s tragic fate reveals the devastating consequences of isolation, social hypocrisy, and inner turmoil.

Main characters

Anna Karenina

The beautiful, intelligent protagonist who seeks genuine love but becomes trapped between her passion, family responsibilities, and society’s condemnation.

Count Alexei Vronsky

A wealthy officer who falls in love with Anna. His relationship with her challenges his ambitions and exposes the difficulties of sustaining passion under social pressure.

Alexei Karenin

Anna’s husband, a respectable government official who represents duty, convention, and the importance of public reputation.

Konstantin Levin

A sincere and introspective landowner whose search for meaning, faith, and a fulfilling family life provides a contrast to Anna’s tragic journey.

Kitty Shcherbatsky

Levin’s wife, who matures through disappointment and learns the value of genuine love, commitment, and family.

Major themes

• Love and passion: Romantic love can bring intense happiness but also suffering when it conflicts with responsibilities and social expectations.
• Marriage and family: Tolstoy presents different kinds of marriages, showing how trust, affection, duty, and understanding shape family life.
• Society and hypocrisy: Anna faces harsh judgment for adultery, while men who behave similarly often retain their social standing.
• Freedom versus social conventions: The novel examines whether individuals can follow their desires without suffering the consequences of society’s rules.
• Faith and the meaning of life: Levin’s experiences suggest that lasting fulfilment comes through compassion, responsibility, faith, and everyday living.
• Jealousy and isolation: Anna’s growing insecurity and exclusion from society contribute to her emotional collapse.

Significance of the title

The title places Anna at the centre of the novel, but Tolstoy deliberately contrasts her story with Levin’s. Anna’s life illustrates the destructive consequences of passion, alienation, and social condemnation, while Levin’s journey explores the possibility of finding meaning through family, work, and spiritual growth.

Conclusion

Anna Karenina is much more than a story of adultery and tragedy. It is a profound exploration of human nature, the complexities of marriage, the inequalities of society, and the search for a meaningful life.

Tolstoy’s central insight is that happiness cannot be secured through passion, wealth, or social status alone; it requires emotional understanding, responsibility, and a deeper sense of purpose.

The novel’s famous opening sentence captures its concern with family life:

“All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

This idea runs throughout the novel, as Tolstoy portrays the many different ways love, duty, pride, and social expectations can shape the happiness or misery of individuals and families.
