Poem: Show-Off
Kamlesh Tripathi
A show-off wears his wealth upon his sleeve,
And boasts of all that he has achieved,
His car must shine, his clothes must glow,
So that the world will stop to know.
He speaks of his friends in high places,
And counts his victories, his trips, as his aces;
His watch glitters, loud and bright,
As he flexes his wrist in great delight.
He pictures each meal and vista that he sees,
He shows off each brand he owns, each thing he knows.
He doesn’t live for the moment’s grace,
Rather, he lives it up to put it on display.
He measures his worth in likes and praises,
He walks through life in borrowed ways.
For every smile, he needs an applause,
For every deed, a hundred wows.
But beneath the ostentatious show,
There beats a heart that fears to know:
That wealth may fade, and fame may flee,
And masks reveal what none can see.
The truly rich need not proclaim
their wealth, their wisdom, or their name.
Deep rivers make no sound
Modest trees bear fruit to ground.
So let the ‘show-off’ blare and scream,
And decorate his fragile shrine.
For those who truly know their worth
Need no display to prove their worth.
