THE FAILING WORLD ORDER

The world order is snapping,

Planet Earth is warping,

All around there is chaos,

Peaceful isms are collapsing,

And the geographical boundaries have become harassing.

In the Israel-Gaza … and the Ukraine-Russian wars,

Countless have been killed,

And countless have been injured,

Which makes us believe,

The world disorder is the new order.

*

Where peace has become a forgotten word,

And the Refugees swarm the world,

There is a contest for economic supremacy,

And there is a race for arms supremacy.

*

Globalisation is confronted by economic nationalism,

The West views the East with scepticism,

The world is in a state of disorder,

And nations are forming formidable lobbies,

To intimidate the weaker Johnnies.

*

Mother Earth is tired,

She has turned into fire,

She has high Celsius,

But the world leaders are in denial.

*

Global warming is the name of the disease,

That is heating the seven seas,

Dissolving the glacier sheets,

And turning the planet into barren fields.  

The US is apprehensive of China,

China is apprehensive of the US,

The US is at loggerheads with Russia,

Russia is at loggerheads with the US.

*

The Middle Kingdom opposes India,

On the brink of the Panchsheel Agreement,

But goes for salami slicing,

Of its neighbours.

*

China swallows Tibet,

And contests … the sovereignty of Taiwan,

Disrespects the world order,

And calls itself a well-behaved citizen.

*

Radicalism is at its peak,

Bangladesh is burning,

Hindus are being tortured,

Uighur Muslims are in camps,

And Pakistan exports terrorism,

*

Iran and the USA can’t stand each other,

Iran can attack Israel,

Hamas believes in self disasters,

The world order is falling apart,

Surely, a new world order is required?

*

Where is the world heading?

There is enough for everyone’s needs but not greed,

Says the Mahatma,

May good sense prevail on the leaders of the day,

God!! Save Mother Earth which now has a nuclear belly.

THE ALLURING WORLD OF MORNING

Each morning as I go and sit along the free flowing river under the old Banyan tree I get this tranquil feel of how little it takes for a man to smile. It’s just like that proverbial ‘stone soup’ that fills your stomach even without too any ingredients. But the situation reverses when I reach my workplace, where, even a smirk becomes a task.

The water is cold, just as cold as the human beings of today even when the globe is warming up. One can now see the redness in the sky announcing the arrival of the sun that is duty bound to give me light and energy. He is my old friend who comes to meet me daily in the morning, barring those cloudy days. A Few patches of dark clouds, semaphore from the sky about the arriving rain, realizing water on earth is only getting scarce. The birds around, up-tempo their melodious chorus, before the blasting car horns, beat their retreat.

The river has a long journey to undertake. It has to meet the sea. Post which it’ll lose its identity. Yet it is calm, barring its routine splashes that hit the shores too often, that too, as a semblance of prothalamiun. The embankment is still, unmoved, even when, some stray dogs are yawning, stretching and occasionally yelping. Early risers, for a longer and healthier life, are out, for their morning walks and jogs. There is harmonious silence all around when one can hear the nature talking to you. It is my time to drench in her and her time to drench in me. Some birds, in formation, appearing like arrows in the sky, about twenty in number are crossing the river. No one knows where they are coming from and where they are heading to. They appear to be in a great hurry. Nevertheless, they are giving an excellent fly-past, reminding you of the Republic-day-Parade. One can distinctly hear their calls but can’t make out what they are saying. Perhaps, discussing about, human atrocities.

Many things in my life have become routine. But not this daily setting. Where, I come and perch everyday, as it unshackles me from the enduring shackles of life for some measurable and memorable moments. Otherwise, there is always so much to worry, so little time to rejoice, so much to plan and all the more to execute. But for the present everything is set aside as it is my divine time that refreshes me to take on the grueling day, and mind you I haven’t spent a penny for it. But as the axiom of life tinkles, all good things, have to come to an end, and so does the morning.

Slowly, I start walking back, as the sun begins to tower up. Morning, and the remaining day are two different worlds. And, only the ones who have experienced it, know about it.

BOOK REVIEW: NO ONE IS TOO SMALL TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

This is only an attempt to create interest in reading. We may not get the time to read all the books in our lifetime. But such reviews, talk and synopsis will at least convey what the book is all about.

    This is a book by teenager climate activist Greta Thunberg, published on 30 May 2019. It consists of a collection of eleven speeches which she has written and orated about global warming and climate crisis.

    Greta Thunberg, born in 2003, August, one day decided not to go to school. Instead, she started to strike outside the Swedish Parliament. Her actions sparked off a global movement on climate crisis, inspiring millions of pupils to go on strike to save our planet. This helped her earning the prestigious Prix Liberte, as well as the Nobel Peace Prize nomination. Greta has Asperger’s syndrome (a developmental disorder characterised by significant difficulties in social interaction and nonverbal communication, along with restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviour and interests). She considers it a gift that has enabled her to see the climate crisis ‘in black and white.’

    ‘No One Is Too Small to Make a Difference is Greta’s first book in English, a collection of her speeches from climate rallies across Europe to audiences at the UN, the World Economic Forum, and the British Parliament. Her next book, ‘Scenes from the Heart’ is a memoir, jointly written with her mother, the opera singer, Malena Ernman, her sister Beata Ernman, and her father Svante Thurnberg.

    The subject book is by Penguin. In all 68 pages. In her speeches she makes some very relevant points that are as follows:

  • When school started in August this year I decided enough is enough. I sat on the ground outside the Swedish Parliament. I school-striked for the climate.
  • Climate scientist Johan Rockstrom and some other people wrote that we have at most three years to reverse growth in greenhouse –gas emissions if we were to reach the goals set in the Paris Agreement. Since then over a year and two months have already passed, and in that time many other scientists have said the same thing. Since then a lot of things have got worse and greenhouse emissions continue to increase.
  • In Sweden we live our lives as if we had the resources of 4.2 planets. Our carbon foot-print is one of the ten worst in the world. This means Sweden steals 3.2 years of natural resources from future generations every year. Those of us who are part of these future generations would like Sweden to stop doing that. She is not shy of criticizing her own country while trying to save the planet from global warming.
  • Many people say that Sweden is a small country, and that it doesn’t matter what we do. But I think it does matter what we do. I think if a few girls can get headlines all over the world by just not going to school for a few weeks, imagine what we could do together if we wanted to.
  • Newspapers continue not to write about climate change even when they know climate is a critical question of our time.
  • Many politicians have ridiculed me and us. They have called me retarded, a bitch, a terrorist and many other things.
  • When I was eight years old, I first heard about something called climate change, or global warming. Apparently a thing human beings had created by their way of living.
  • If burning fossil fuels was so very bad that it threatened our very existence, how could we just continue like before? Why were there no restrictions? Why wasn’t it made illegal?
  • Countries like Sweden, the US and UK need to start reducing emissions by at least 15 percent every year to stay below a 2 degree Celsius warming target. Now IPCC (Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change) say that we have to aim for 1.5 degree Celsius.
  • No one ever speaks about the aspect of equity, or climate justice, clearly stated all over in the Paris Agreement and the Kyoto Protocol, which is absolutely essential to make the Paris Agreement work on a global scale. This means rich countries need to get down to zero emissions, within six to twelve years, so that people in poorer countries can heighten their standard of living by building some of the infrastructure that we have already built, such as roads, hospitals, electricity, schools and clean drinking water. Otherwise, how can we expect countries like India or Nigeria to care about the climate crisis if we, who already have everything, don’t care even a second about it, basis our actual commitments to the Paris Agreement?
  • Why should I be studying for a future that’ll soon not be there, and moreover, when no one is doing anything whatsoever to save it?
  • Today we use 100 million barrels of oil every day. There are no policies to change that. There are no rules to keep that oil in the ground.
  • According to the IPCC, we are less than twelve years away from the point of no return to disaster. There are no grey areas when it comes to survival.
  • Here in Davos—just like everywhere else—everyone is talking about money. It seems that money and growth are our only main concerns.
  • We are now at a time in history where everyone with any insight of the climate crisis that threatens our civilization and the entire biosphere must speak out. The bigger your carbon footprint—the bigger your moral duty. The bigger your platform—the bigger your responsibility.
  • In May 2018 I was one of the winners in a writing competition about the environment held by Svenska Dagbladet, a Swedish newspaper. I got my article published when some people contacted me, among them was Bo Thoren from Fossil Free Dalsland.
  • On the 20th August I sat down outside the Swedish Parliament. I handed out fliers with a long list of facts about the climate crisis and explanations on why I was striking. The first thing I did was to post on Twitter and Instagram what I was doing and it soon went viral. Then journalists and newspapers started arriving. A Swedish entrepreneur and businessman active in the climate movement, Ingmar Rentzhog, was among the first to arrive. He spoke with me and took pictures that he posted on facebook.
  • Many people say that we don’t have any solutions to the climate crisis. And they are right. Because how do you ‘solve’ the greatest crisis that humanity has ever faced? How do you ‘solve’ a war? How do you ‘solve’ going to the moon for the first time? How do you ‘solve’ inventing new inventions?
  • The climate crisis is both the easiest and the hardest issue mankind has ever faced.

    This is a priceless book written by a teenager activist hence I would not like to rate it. Instead, I would like to recommend the book to every citizen of the world.

Trees are 75% water. Apple is 80% water and human body is 70% water. Most of us believe that there is an infinite supply of water on earth whereas the earth’s water circulation is fixed and works in a closed loop. The total water in earth is 1.1 quadrillion acre feet. 97% of this is salt water in oceans and seas. Fresh water is 2.5% (28 trillion acre feet) in which 69.5% exists as glaciers, snow and permafrost. Another 30.1% is underground in deep aquifers and only 0.4% is available in the form of lakes, rivers, soil moisture, air humidity, marshes and wetlands. Thus, there is only 7 billion acre feet of water, ie 1.4 million litres per person per year to drink and perform their daily chores. Moreover rivers are drying up, underground reservoirs are becoming deeper and inaccessible. So water needs to be conserved.

WHAT ARE INDICATORS OF GLOBAL WARMING? Watch out—the temperature in the Arctic permafrost zone has risen by about 5.5 degree Fahreinheit since 1980. Climatic conditions remain relatively constant when seen from the human perspective, but they have changed many times over the life of the planet. A warming trend in the last century raises the urgent question of whether human activity is now changing the climate. The United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for its work on climate change.     The panel studied the net change in heat entering or leaving the climate system and concluded that due to increased greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide–up from 280 parts per million in pre-industrial society to 379 parts per million in 2005—and heat exchange had increased about 2.3 watts per square meter since 1750. That increase—unprecedented over the last 10,000 years—is leading to warmer ocean temperatures, higher sea levels, increased humidity and shrinking snow pack and ice at the Poles. These climate changes could influence the weather worldwide.

GEOGRAPHY INFLUENCES CLIMATE: Coastal areas are refreshed when cooler air moves ashore. South and east of the Great Lakes, “lake effect” (meteorological phenomena) snow falls when cold air sweeps over warmer waters. Spring and summer thunderstorms build where three types of air mass converge: Cold and dry from the north, warm and dry from the southwest, and warm and moist from the Gulf of Mexico. Born to a distinguished academic family in imperial Russia, Wladmir Koppen (1846-1940) noticed during trips to his family’s coastal estate on the Black Sea how the plant life changed as he traversed plains, mountains, and the seaside landscape. His study of how flora was related to climate led him in 1884 to produce a map of global temperature bands ranging from the Poles to the equator. Sixteen years later he refined that map into a mathematical formula, which defined five major climate types based on temperature and rainfall—ranging from the intense humidity of the tropics to the cold, dry polar caps. The system, still in use today, corresponds roughly to the classification system of biomes (biological communities) that describes the world’s regions based on plant and animal life.

The global water situation is very scary. Every year 1.8 million children die of water-borne diseases; 30,000 deaths happen due to unsafe water and diarrhea. More than 783 million people do not have access to clean water and this will rise to 5.3 billion by 2025.
