     Ernest Hemingway introduced a famous theory about his writing style. It was based on the principle of the iceberg. He explained, that for every iceberg “seven-eighths of it is underwater for every part it shows.”  Hemingway’s writing represents the strongest one-eighth of the iceberg (which remains above water) that one can read. His cautious wording helps the reader understand what isn’t being said- the spirit behind the words.  Critics have called Hemingway’s style “deceptively simple,” “masculine,” and “energetic.”

    According to the theory, a person’s thoughts and feelings can be construed by only a small portion of what is visible on the surface (the tip of the iceberg). In contrast, a larger portion of the thoughts and emotions are hidden below the surface (the bulk of the iceberg). The theory suggests that people reveal only a small part of their personalities to others but to understand someone truly, one must look deeper than what is immediately visible to the eyes.

    The iceberg theory, also called the “theory of omission,” is the intentional omission of details and explanations in writing, leaving the reader to infer the meaning and significance of the story. Hemingway’s sparse and straightforward writing style, characterised by short, simple sentences and minimal use of adjectives, effectively employs the iceberg theory to convey a deeper emotional and psychological subtext to his stories.

    Hemingway was known for his unadorned writing style. His “Iceberg Theory” of writing emphasises that a writer should only reveal a small portion of the story, with the bulk of the meaning and emotion implied or hinted at. His writing style is often praised for its concision, and emotional depth. He believed a good way to convey a character’s emotions was not through direct description or dialogue but through subtle hints and implications. In his writing, Hemingway often presented only the tip of the iceberg. He left much of the character’s thoughts and feelings unsaid, allowing the reader to infer from the characters’ actions, dialogue, and other subtle cues.

    Hemingway used indirect characterisation to reveal a character’s personality. He believed that the setting and atmosphere were crucial for establishing the mood and tone of the character. By using sensory details, he crafted an immersive world for the reader with simple, unadorned language that emphasized the story. Hemingway’s iceberg theory can be seen in his distinguished works such as “A Farewell to Arms”, “The Sun Also Rises” and “The Old Man and the Sea”.

    Ernest Hemingway’s novel “A Farewell to Arms” is a fine example of the writer’s use of the iceberg theory. In this novel, the author applies the theory to convey the emotions and thoughts of the main character, Frederic Henry, without actually stating them. For instance, instead of describing Frederic’s feelings of disillusionment as a result of the war, Hemingway projects Frederic’s emotions through his actions, such as his drinking and his decision to desert the army. Similarly, Hemingway insinuates Frederic’s love for Catherine through their conversations and by describing their interactions, rather than through a direct statement of love.

     In his work “The Sun Also Rises” Hemingway explores themes of love, loss, and disillusionment of the Lost Generation, a group of young people who came of age during World War I. They were disillusioned by the war’s destruction. The novel’s characters, Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley are aimless. They are searching for meaning in a world that no longer makes any sense to them. Hemingway uses the iceberg theory to explore these searches and to portray the characters’ emotional state. Through the use of omission, he conveys the depth of the characters, their experiences and emotions. For instance, Hemingway implies the emotional bond between Jake and Brett through their dialogues and interactions, without explicitly stating their romantic involvement.

    His novel “The Old Man and the Sea” is another excellent example of the author’s use of the iceberg theory in literature. Hemingway employs his style in “The Old Man and the Sea” to express his characters’ emotions, thoughts, and experiences through their actions, conversations, and descriptions, rather than through direct statements.    In conclusion, the Iceberg Theory and Hemingway’s writing demonstrate the power of suggestion and implication in literature.

    In the end, despite all his fame, fortune and lit-achievements, Hemingway unleashed the theory of iceberg on himself by committing suicide in 1961 after winning the Nobel Prize in 1954. No one could have ever imagined that such an accomplished person would ever commit suicide. Thus he lived the life of an iceberg—the visible top that never revealed he would commit suicide and the invisible bottom that committed suicide. But before that, he remarked, ‘Writing, at its best, is a lonely life.’
