One of the world’s oldest newspapers, the Vienna-based Wiener Zeitung, ended its daily print run after more than three centuries. Its 320-year press run was remarkably independent for an official gazette. It is the world’s oldest print daily. The world’s longest-running daily newspaper, Austria’s Wiener Zeitung, stopped its print publication last Friday the 7th of August, 2023.
First published under the name Wiennerisches Diarium, the paper was set out to provide a sober account of the news “without any oratory frills or poetic gloss” when it was launched on August 8, 1703. The print edition’s final front page read. The Wiener Zeitung, which is owned by the Austrian government but editorially independent, suffered a sharp decrease in revenue after a recent law dropped a requirement for companies to pay to publish changes to the commercial registry in the print edition.
The newspaper, which is considered a quality publication with a wide range of articles covering domestic and foreign news, culture and business, was forced to cut 63 jobs and reduce its editorial staff by almost two-thirds to 20. It will continue to operate online and plans a monthly print edition.
The Vienna-based German paper had its first print run on August 8, 1703, more than 50 years before the Battle of Palashi (in India) in our neck of the woods, covering 320 years that included, ‘12 presidents, 10 emperors, 2 republics, 1 newspaper’. In 1768, the newspaper reported about a piano recital by a talented 12-year-old Austrian. He was revealed as some Mozart kid.
Wiener Zeitung will now solely have an online edition—which will not be quite the same. It reportedly has plans for a monthly print edition. But what was the cause of the closure? A new law that stops the legal requirement for companies to pay for publishing public announcements in newspapers, causing Zeitung a loss of income of about $19 million, and leading to a personal purge. But, for us, the bigger news pertains to another side of the paper. Despite being an official gazette—thus, government-dependent—it had maintained its independence and was even critical of the government on various issues. In the final edition, it blamed the government for its print demise, something that many readers of even non-state-owned publications may find astonishing, since to them any criticism may seem as biting the hand that feeds. Now the financially independent online Zeitung should be even more free.
In its final daily print edition, the paper interviewed one of Austria’s most famous exports: actor-turned-politician Arnold Schwarzenegger. It lamented that, unlike Mr Schwarzenegger’s famous “Terminator” character, the newspaper won’t be able to coin the phrase “I’ll be back” its motto for the future.
